— Anthony Black discusses his variety of options with clarity on the horizon

quote:

Arkansas: “Coach Muss and his whole staff have NBA experience so they know what it takes to get you there. He has good experience with big guards and developing them and getting them to the League.”

G League: “That’s the best development you can get, it‘s a professional mindset and would be a big sacrifice but it’s also a good option to think about.”

Georgia: “Coach Crean’s attention to detail and his development of guys he has had like Anthony Edwards and Dwyane Wade, developing them and getting them to the League.”

Gonzaga: “The way they play, they play super fast, they run a lot of ball-screens and they trust me to come in and play early.”

Memphis: “Obviously it’s Penny Hardaway, he’s a big guard like me. Just having that option to go and learn from him, that’s a big place.”

Oklahoma State: “Me and coach Mike, we have a strong connection. He sees Cade Cunningham in me, we’re not the same player but he sees that I can fit in his system the same way that he did.”

quote:

Black said that enrolling in college in the next month is a possibility but is something that won’t be decided until after his ruling.

“Possibly, it’s college and it would get me stronger and ready for the next level,” he shared of his thoughts on reclassifying. “Just having that option is good.”

Again, clarity is on the horizon for the highly talented guard out of Texas and next week Black will start to see what the next steps are in his career.

“Just get through everything with the high school stuff and once we are done with that then I will be able to make a decision,” he said of what’s next.

Making a move up from No. 7 to No. 5 is North Little Rock (Ark.) High guard Nick Smith and he’s staying home to play at Arkansas.

quote:

A high school teammate of Smith’s, Oregon-bound seven-footer Kel'el Ware has put together an incredible senior season and is a second player to move into the top 10 going from No. 14 to No. 8.

quote:

This deep into the rankings cycle and near graduation, we aren’t going to see that many more five-star prospects emerging. However, Dillon Mitchell and Jordan Walsh were able to make the leap from four to five-star status.

Another product of the always loaded Montverde Academy, Mitchell is arguably the single best defender in the class of 2022. The Texas Longhorn signee wing is a monster athlete who blocks shots, gets into passing lanes and really knows how to finish on the break. He moves all the way up to No. 16 from No. 33.

Just like Mitchell, Walsh also jumped 17 spots – to No. 20 overall – to find himself in five-star territory. Headed to Arkansas, he moved from Dallas to Branson (Mo.) Link Academy for his senior season. While Walsh’s physical tools and ability to make plays on both ends of the court have never been in question, it is the work he has done to play under more control and make better decisions that has earned him a fifth star.

Previous Ranking: No. 37

New Ranking: No. 20

quote:

Why he rose: Jordan Walsh has had an interesting journey as a prospect and while there's still progress to be made, there is no denying the physical tools and natural talent. The Arkansas signee has everything you can't teach in a prospect with his size, frame, length and athleticism.

Similar to Mitchell on this list, Walsh is also an elite defender with tremendous potential on that end of the floor. As he continues to get stronger, he has the ability to defend one-through-four and even some fives in smaller lineups.

Offensively, he is improving his jumper and with continued development of his shot as well as his feel for the game and his decision-making, Walsh can make another jump up this list.

Would be interesting to see how early on Muss was going after Walsh. He certainly nailed that evaluation.

I've kept track going back to June and July when the AAU circuit was going and we were on these guys before that.

Our evaluation and early offers under Muss really rise up the rankings. If they aren't elite from the beginning when offered they tend to climb and climb.

Obviously some others are more developmental and role type players.

2023 4* PG Jeremiah Johnson is coming back for his third visit, sounds promising for our chances with him.

Jonathan Givony @DraftExpress

quote:

We've elected to go with Nick Smith as our No. 1 prospect in the 2022 high school class. The 17-year-old offers a tantalizing combination of size, length, fluidity, shot-making, playmaking and competitiveness, giving him an ideal package for a modern NBA guard prospect.

This comes on the heels of ESPN's first 2023 NBA Mock Draft with Nick going #3 overall.

Borzello agree's

quote:

Jeff Borzello @jeffborzello

“We’ve elected to go with [Arkansas signee Nick] Smith, arguably the most enticing long-term talent, as the best incoming college freshman prospect.” Love this take. Size, playmaking, shot-making.

Draft Express a day later also names Nick the top prospect for NBA draft.
