The criteria was starting multiple games. Avalos' legacy is well established though.

And McElroy was a very good college QB. He had an excellent SECCG against Florida and played injured in the NC game vs Texas.

Spencer Pennington, we would’ve won that bowl game against Minnesota if it wasn’t for him.

Oh so we can be critical of Bama QBs as long as they weren't good?

Have to factor in surrounding talent, especially OL.

Those early 2000 Bama teams had some hellaciously bad OL play.

Not saying any of them were Tua, but when you are running for your life with no ground game and subpar skill players it’s not the same deal as the Saban era.

Pennington and Gullion would be 50% passers on 2020 Alabama

Danny Woodson was perhaps the best athlete on this list and pretty much the DUMBEST on this list as well!!

LOL no. We hardly ran any jet sweeps this year. They'd have been lucky to get to 50% in Kiffin's offenses.

After the game, Pennington left no doubt where he stood on the lack of a call on the end zone contact by game officials.

“We didn’t like that,” Pennington said. “Back where we came from, that’s [pass interference] every time.”

If I remember correctly, his exact quote was "that's PI every time".

Yeah, those guys weren't good, but Woodson was worse than any of them except Pennington.

These 4 for sure, it's hard to compare them directly, better to divide them up into tiers

Bad
Average
Good
Elite

It's pretty easy to spot which QB belongs in each tier rather than try to compare them to each other.

You also have those odd QB's who have vastly different years. Barker's first few years he was average at best, but by the 94 season he had developed into a good QB.

Yep, same with Pennington

I mean Pennington was like a 2* from Fayette. Marc Gullion was super transfer from Miami.

I still remember being excited because Gullion was a 4 STAR!

I'd probably group them like so:

BAD:

Brian Burgdorff
John David Phillips
Marc Guillon
Spencer Pennington

AVERAGE:

Gary Hollingsworth
Danny Woodson
Freddie Kitchens
Andrew Zow
Tyler Watts
John Parker Wilson

GOOD:

Jay Barker
Brodie Croyle
Greg McElroy
Blake Sims
Jacob Coker
Jalen Hurts

ELITE:

AJ McCarron
Tua Tagovailoa
Mac Jones

Jay Barker's 18 yards and 2 picks in the championship game were pretty bad. Didn't lose though.

You can't win a national championship nowadays with QB stats like that with the '85 Bears defense and Walter Payton.

I wouldn’t put Gary Hollingsworth in this category to be honest. In ‘90, he had a new OC (Coach Moore) and a new HC (Coach Stallings) that had a totally different philosophy about offensive football. Add to that, we lost 3 experienced/starters at skill positions in 3 consecutive weeks. Season opener against Brett Favre and USM, we lost Siran Stacy/‘89 SEC player of the year to a torn ACL. Led 24-20, lost 27-24.
Week 2 lost WR Prince Wimbley to a torn ACL. Led 16-10, lost 17-16. Week 3 lost WR Craig Sanderson to a torn ACL. Led 13-10, lost 17-13. We replaced all of that experience and production with redshirt freshmen.

Holy cow. I remember watching these guys but it's been purged from long term storage. I cant recall a single play by either.

Coping mechanism?

I am aware of the difficulties we faced on offense that season but I'm basing my categorization solely on production and Hollingsworth's 1990 season was anything but productive. He completed less than 50% of his passes and had a TD-INT ratio of 4-13. The only reason I did not rate him as "BAD" is due to the fact the offense had all of those injuries and also due to his 1989 season (where he still had a TD-INT ratio of 14-16 but became our first ever 2,000+ yard passer).
