OC match-up? I know Chic-Fila Bowl or whatever sets it up, but surely we could have told them no to Duke, find someone better? Not having a quality win this year is killer. Had we beaten someone like Oregon or Texas--we'd be sitting in much better shape right now. Also, NMSU is like the worst team in FBS this year. Would have been better off with an MTSU or Tulane. Whoever made our schedule this year royally screwed us. When you end up with a weak schedule, you have no margin for error.

I think it was suppose to be Miami but they backed out to play UF. And no one else wanted the game so we got stuck with Duke.

I Could be wrong about all that though

No one said yes. Duke said yes because we've been sister schools for a while now, and they stepped up to the plate - really as a favor.

"We'll play anyone you can get to play us."

Bill Battle was the AD at the time if that helps answer your question.

Settling for Duke fit his M.O.

My understanding is that someone else in the ACC (someone better) was slated to play in the game and backed out. I'm not sure which team that was.

Yeah, really no excuse for NMSU. They are among the worst D1 every single year. The epitome of rent-a-win. They probably should drop down to FCS level and they still wouldn't be competitive. Western Carolina IS FCS and not very good at that level. It's embarrassing. I realize Byrne had probably little or no say in this schedule but it really is horrific in terms of OOC opponents.

It's not just Duke.

The SEC West sucks arse outside of Bama and maybe Auburn.

Have we had a worse AD than Bill? If we have it’s was definitely before I was born.

The Nike deal alone is enough for him to earn that title.

Could have just beat LSU and it wouldn't be an issue.

Never hear anyone trashing CU's schedule and they play a crap one every year.

Well, I agree their schedule sucks, but they are undefeated. Currently, their best win is A&M, and they play Wake this weekend. Neither team are ranked in the playoff rankings. Basically, if they lose, they are out with that schedule.

I agree but the problem is they aren’t going to lose with that schedule. It would be like taking LSU & Auburn off our schedule and replacing them with Kentucky & Vanderbilt. It’s a joke and they’ve received a fraction of the shite we’ve gotten over our schedule. But since it’s “little ol’ Clemson” a lot of the national media just let it go.

I agree but that comes with the territory. We're big bad Bama and they're just l'il ole Clemson, at least in the media's eyes.

They look at our schedule the past two seasons and talk about how Bama always plays a weak schedule and that's far from the truth. In '15 and '16, we played the toughest schedule in the nation; in '09 and '14, we played the second toughest. I read a survey of national championship teams that had our '15 team as the 3rd best of all time; they're the only national champion in history to have 12 quality wins. One of the BCS computer models that's still around (Billingsley), rates our 2015 schedule as the strongest of all time. Yet, you'll never hear that from the media or other fanbases because it doesn't fit with their agenda...

Here's the link to that survey I mentioned before:

Clemson is the only ACC team ranked in the entire CFP Playoff. That's really hard to do for a "Power" 5 conference.

With that said the ACC is just slightly rated higher in the conference RPI than the PAC 12 which is dog shite this year (and has been for a while actually). And both the ACC and PAC 12 are rated solidly below the AAC. Winning the AAC should carry more weight this year than winning the PAC 12 or ACC.

CFP Top 25 Teams by conference right now:

Big 10 - 6
(#2, 8, 9, 14, 15, 20)

SEC - 5
(#1, 4, 5, 11, 12)

Big 12 - 5
(#10, 13, 19, 22, 24)

AAC - 3
(#17, 18, 23)

Pac 12 - 2
(#6, 7)

ACC - 1
(#3)

Independent - 1
(#16)

Mountain West - 1
(#21)

Sunbelt - 1
(#25)

Doesn't matter. The University doesn't have to play them, and finally we are getting away from them. A home & home with almost anyone would have been better.
