Yes Saban let’s you add some plays and schemes that he wants. It’s been reported time after time that Bill O’Brien was told this is your playbook. I think the respect Saban has for Sark was amazing. He let Sark kinda change and add on what we had..Especially the RPO. I just don’t see O’Brien getting the same reins. It seemed to me BOB was too much worried about being balanced than anything else. We knew the calls.. run on first down ans then 2 passes. It never changed.. which was odd

As previously noted, I just think O'Brien isn't savvy about the new college game, defense and offense, and all those years ago when he was a college OC, he wasn't great then. I hope he moves on after this year, along with Golding.

Oh I agree.. he isn’t up to speed. But i know a lot of Texan fans and they warned me. He is getting roasted by nfl players and Texan fans right now.

The offense is the same way.. you are given a play book and told this is your scheme. Now you have the freedom to call plays from that book.. but it’s hard to implement something new or style

Not sure I agree with this. Sarkisian's offense wasn't the same offense that Locksley ran, and he was an innovator for scheming new plays. The offense Kiffin ran with Jalen Hurts was not the same as the offense we ran with Tua, and as noted, Tua's offense even with Sarkisian wasn't the same as Mac's offense last year. Maybe this OC just isn't that great.

And yes, I understand the offense Kiffin used with Hurts was one pretty much of necessity , since Hurts' freshman year he wasn't as confident throwing the ball as he became later. Long live the jet sweep.

edit to note that I know Saban has said that the OC will run the Alabama offense, but apparently the OC has plenty of leeway to scheme and play call the way he works and according to the personelle. Also as previously noted, maybe this OC just isn't good in this college game. I had worried about that since he hasn't been a college OC in several years and then he wasn't great by any stretch.

Just as an example, in this clip at the 6:03 mark, on the one yard line, look where Kiffin has the QB taking the snap and who his two upbacks are.

Compare that with the abortion of a play that BoB ran on the one yard line.

No disrespect meant at all. Could you explain in more detail what you meant? I just didn’t understand it.

Optimistic post of the day:

If Pete Golding can be the defensive coordinator of a major D-1 program and get paid a million dollars to do it, you can do anything in life, because anything is possible.

ANYTHING.

I think he keeps him because no one else wants him and CNS hates having to replace assistants all the time.

There is a school of thought that says that you don't let someone like that go unless you know who you're going to hire.

I believe you, Boz

So, why is Golding still employed?

Jimmy Lake may be available after the season the way Washington is trending.

I have also heard a rumor that Saban tried to find Golding a landing spot after the natty last season and there were no takers so he kept him. After last night, I say that’s Golding’s problem, not ours. He’s damaging the program, time to look at the bigger picture.

I just read an article week before last that talked about Kiffin coming up with plays and implementing them hours before games sometimes.

With the amount of turnover on the staff last season and with the defense playing just good enough to help us win the title, I can see why Saban didn’t replace Golding.

Hopefully Saban makes the move this year

It is so painful to watch us blitz . Not using the lineman’s rush to create lanes to blitz… we are just chicken fighting at the LOS

We have 1 interior blitz where both ILB hit the A gap and that is all. It is horribly ineffective and we never get to the QB. The center stands up the nose tackle and the guards both block down on the A gap and you have nothing but a traffic jam in the middle.

I think you're spot on. I've been saying it for a few years. It's the same system we've used since 2007. He evolved offensively over the years but not defensively. It's too complex and there are too many years of film for a good OC to evaluate and attack.
Offenses are too quick and diverse to use so many keys and calls. It also hurts having depth ready to be used in the game. It has to be simplified and he needs to bring in top level coordinators and let them innovate and work their system.
Who really wants to work for a guy that micro,- manages your every decision and doesn't allow you the trust and freedom to do what you were hired for. It's why people don't stay long. They get their year or two of experience and resume boost and leave.

Now, that being said, Golding is just not a good coach. Period. And I tried to warn people about O'Brien and Marrone when they were hired but got flamed for it. If you really look at Bill's time at Houston, New England and Penn St, it's not as good as people think. His offenses at Houston were middle of the league or lower and his players couldn't stand him. Even Watt tried to fight him at practice. It's why he wasn't hired by another NFL team after Houston. It's not because he just wanted to come work for Saban. Please. At New England, he was OC for a season and a half. The players that were there will tell you Brady audibled around 80% of the plays BOB called.
His work at Penn State was ok but look at who they played those seasons when they were successful. Basically, he's very overrated as an OC.
And Marrone? We hired after four years at Jacksonville and his time at Buffalo. Did anyone watch those seasons? Why would we think he was the answer at OL coach?

There are some tough personnel decisions that need to be made and I really believe the defensive system needs to be reevaluated.

An Open Letter to Coach Saban:

Coach Saban,

You are, without question, the greatest football coach in the history of college football, and we are blessed to have you at the University of Alabama. The culture you have created and maintained for over a decade is truly remarkable. Your program is the benchmark of college athletics, and many of your team’s records will belong to the ages. The loyalty you have shown to your players and staff are forever etched in our minds and hearts. Your tenure has been the absolute “best of times”. As a fan base, we plead with you to continue doing whatever is necessary to maintain Alabama’s success. Presently, it is crystal clear Pete Golding is not the quality Coordinator we need at Alabama. His defenses continue to regress and continuously display a lack of fundamentals in addition to poor schemes. This experiment must end. There is no excuse for his performance with the athletes he has at his disposal. The Alabama Family wishes Pete the best in his future endeavors, but only his dismissal will satisfy and heal. It is time to make a change, and hire someone who is capable and worthy of the Crimson Tide.

Roll Tide,
Hoyt

GOAT has made poor choices concerning Pete! Actually, Golding got a large raise last year and is currently making $1.5 million per year.
