Clearly not. I guess you should give that history degree back.

This country is still reeling from the trauma of 1861-65.

And before you accuse me of promoting a “Lost Cause” narrative, I have long been in favor of these changes.

I'm glad we agree about this. The promise of Lincoln was obviously never fulfilled. Reconstruction was a failure and obviously did not go nearly far enough in addressing the real issues, many of which still exist today as you say here.

Great day for the University. A nice step in the right direction.

Actually, I'm pretty happy. About this and other things.

Some other people in the thread definitely seem like they're sad right now though, lol

I wonder how long it will be before we remove all the monuments to football teams before desegregation.

If we're going to do stupid stuff for no reason, let's go all the way with it.

Not to mention this monument is only about 1000' away from a literal slave cemetery.

Right? I know! We should remove all reference to any football team from before Alabama had a black quarterback. Or, wait...have we had a black head coach yet? We shouldn't be celebrating any of the teams at all.

Not to mention it was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who was just trying to paint the CSA in the best possible light (and supported the Klan).

The Klan which was a paramilitary arm of the democratic party back then.

So...it was in an area consistent with other historical items from the period...?

If it was on the front of one (or all) of the surviving buildings the children defended, would that be better?

That started on his own accord with the Emancipation Proclamation that did not end slavery as a whole.

Complete failure but it was never designed to unite people but create control for one side. I think to many people, probably based on how it is taught, fail to understand nothing was resolved for the slaves or their many generations that followed.

You know that confederate veterans are by law considered US veterans right?

On an oddly related note, the last person in the US getting a Civil War veteran's pension died two days ago.

Her father was a combat veteran of both the Confederate and Union armies - and y'all thought this transfer thing was something new....
