I think most of these guys on the roster will look a lot different by next season. It’s amazing what can happen when you really get in the gym and put in work. I’m talking about physically transforming your body and actually working on your game.
These guys went to waste under Avery. Petty was a prime example. The talent is there but he never put in the work to become the best player possible.
Our guys have to buy in, though. That’s the key. I’m excited to see how dudes like Herb, Petty, Kira and Reese improve within this new culture and how they improve with our new S & C coach.

Yea I am not buying the “ his system doesn’t use bigs” narrative . Oats may prefer bigs who can stretch the defense but you still need some who can bang down low and at least be a presence on defense and rebounding . Even Auburn had a couple
Yep they had a five star center who doesnt really fit their system but plays a lot. I think Galin stays and gets a lot of minutes next year. Im in the minority but i wish Giddens wouldve stayed. Kid is decent if he learn how not to foul.

Kind of feel like this thread has just become a lot of "maybe if", "seems like", "he sucks" vomit.
Also, Avery cutting practice time late in the year is totally reasonable. I was happy to see he was tinkering with things to try and figure out a good balance. Our guys looked dead. Now, obviously that probably had to do with their overall program conditioning/practice routines going back to the preseason, but that's kind of beside the point.

I agree about cutting the practice time. Wimp advised him to do it. I think our 17 year old had hit the wall. He had not gone through a year of working out and conditioning and was probably playing more than anyone. You cant blame that on Avery. I do believe (with no actual proof) that they didnt work on fundamentals and skills as hard as other programs do.
On the big man problem, If we get Allen and he is eligible to play next season, that would solve the problem. I dont think Buffalo has released any of them though, have they?

I think Petty is maybe the lone example of someone on the team that got better as the season went on. He was abysmal the first couple of months of the season, but was one of the more solid contributors late in the season. I'm pretty excited to see what kind of player he'll be under Oats. He still has a ways to go on defense though.
I think Ingram is the example you were looking for, and maybe even Hall.

Do we know of any big men that Oats has offered yet aside from Hawkins of course. We are waiting on Watford I know but that’s the only one Ive seen mentioned.
Meanwhile we have a guard set to visit this weekend and Cheatam who said he is visiting ASAP.
If we are in the market for more big men in this class aside from Hawkins and Watford I haven’t heard anything about it. Seems like we are trying to recruit more guards.

It would be ok with me if we stopped talking so much about Avery Johnson. Nice dude, not a great coach, good luck to him. I'm ready to discuss the future. That future includes some players whose names you may know, but whom you've never seen play under a competent coach with a good system. Let's hope we have one of those and judge those players on what they do from this point on.
Also, playing "five out" or "four out and one in" doesn't mean you don't need bigs. You still have to play defense and most teams are going to have some kind of a post game. It just means that on offense, your 4 (and 5 in five out) needs to be able to play out some. A center that can play on the perimeter AND defend the other team's bigs isn't easy to find.

I wished Giddens had stayed as well

I am not saying we don’t need bigs no-one is.
The only time Ive heard Oats mention bigs is when he said we have to many, and he hasn’t offered any since Hawkins committed.
Meanwhile we have offered like 4 guards.

I think we are going to end up with a 4/5 tweener playing the 5 more often than not, and a stretch 4 at the 4. We can sign guys like that. Some 6'11" 245 freak who can run the floor, rebound/block shots, and hit jumpers is going to sign with Duke or Kentucky, not us.

The priority has to be one that can play the perimeter though. It's useless to have a defense first center if the other team can ignore him anywhere outside of the paint/hound him into bad passes.

In terms of Galin and Fleming...just from seeing vids of Fleming, he seems like the more athletic and better ball handler of the two.
I like Galin and very much appreciated his effort here, but I am just not sure he is well suited for Oats's system. Would probably be mutually beneficial for him to transfer.

I disagree with that. If your center can't score from outside, so what? Your other 4 guys can. You're like 98% of other teams. If your center can't defend the post, you're going to get abused down low by 98% of other teams.

Exactly lol. No team has a team full of bigs that can all stroke it. Even the Warriors had Javele Mcgee.

Buffalo fans are still super pissed Oats left them. They are not letting up. Seems as though they cannot get over the fact he left for a football only school. I saw one Buffalo fan say that had he stayed he would have turned them into Gonzaga...that he’s that good.
I guess they see it as if Chris Petersen left Boise back in the day for Kentucky. I hope they are right about him being the real deal...we might have just gotten a big time coach...
Buffalo fans can STFU.
How many of those schlubs making $60k/year would spurn an offer to triple their salary to $180k/year out of loyalty to their employer?
Zero. That's how many.
But they want Oats to turn down $2.4m because $800k is enough and they could be the next Gonzaga? Get real, folks. Every single one of them and their mommas would have snatched Greg Byrne's arm off.

Guards are my worry. At Buffalo sometimes Oats had 4 guards on the floor at once. You need guards who are good ball handlers to play as fast as he wants and not be turnovers machines.
Petty and Herb Jones aren’t exactly master dribblers.
Kira is our only current player I’d consider a good ball handler. Bolden and Shackleford coming in will help, but we definitely could use another good guard or two who has some handles and does well in transition.

To me it comes down to whether you want to sacrifice size for spacing or sacrifice spacing for size. Oats seems more inclined to the former. That's why I expect us to sign a bunch of tweeners and stretch 4s as our bigs. We aren't going to go after kids like Taylor, Giddens, and Smith, but I could see Oats taking someone like Hall and teaching him to pass and shoot a little.

Nah. Petty is exactly who I meant. Dude is allergic to the gym. His legs are thinner than my wrist. I hope Petty becomes the guy you all think he is because I’ve always been very underwhelmed with him.
