How was his recruiting at ND?
Nothing special before this year but he has improved. Dante Moore was a silent to ND (was recruiting for the class) and was about to go public but Rees got screwed when Oregon (and later UCLA) offered him the bag. He recovered with Kenny Minchey, who was a top 15 QB in 2023 and landed CJ Carr, a top 5 QB in the 2024 class. The down side to the Moore thing was that Jackson Arnold and Chris Vizzina both wanted to come while Dante was a silent and Rees and Freeman put all their eggs in the Dante basket.
My biggest gripe with him is with his play-calling. He has a tendency to get too cute and get away with what is working.

Yep, that is how I'm currently viewing it.

I'm not sure that is exactly what he said.
"We might have some final news on some coordinators tomorrow" or something along those lines

We went from interviewing the coach with the #2 offense in college to the coach for #60.
The year before they were 45th. They've gotten worse.

Was his response to a 7 man blitz with heavy A gap pressure 4 verticals with no safety valve?

Did he state that somewhere to the media yesterday?

I feel indifferent about Rees, didn’t really have a quarterback so I can’t really make a judgement

This is where I'm at as well. He would actually be a pretty intriguing hire. He's thought of highly in coaching circles but he just hasn't had the talent (or QB) to really put a top offense together on the field.
He would be interesting to watch with the talent we bring in every year compared to ND, hell, I hate to say this but look at what Kelly did with a talent bump, 10 wins and he finally beat Alabama. It's reasonable to believe Rees can make the move to Alabama and exceed expectations with more to work with here.
Also, you'll see a lot of digs regarding recruiting/development but it looks like that has become a big improvement for him in a short amount of time. Hartman is transferring to ND, he brought in a 4* QB, and has this Carr kid in the next year's class that has some hype. You give him our resources and he could do well.
I'm more optimistic than the initial reactions on the boards and social media but I also wouldn't label it a "slam dunk."

No, REC banquet

I certainly don't think this hire is worth melting over. It will be an improvement over the last OC. There is a chance he's been held back by a lack of athlete, specifically QB, the last 3 years. Even if he hasn't, we have the offensive roster makeup moving forward to do a lot of good stuff with a single back system.
Saban has never hired a flashy "hot" OC. Ever. We've hired out of nowhere guys (Mac, Nuss) and rehab guys (Lane, Sark, Locks, BoB).

The only place he's been an OC or even a quarterback coach is at ND and there is nothing showing he is capable of being a good one. If he is the hire, it's a settle.

Then why did Kelly try to bring him to LSU as the OC? Why have other teams tried to hire him away from ND?
Do all these people want to hire a crappy OC?

That's not true. Notre Dame squeezed everything they could out of their offensive roster in 2020 and 2021. They were a consistent Top 20 offense across all metrics in 2020 and 2021 and only struggles when they met teams that could match them in the trenches and make them win throwing it downfield (with a non-NFL QB and no NFL WRs).
They struggled last year, especially early on, for sure. What was the reason for that? Clearly partly personel turnover, but the rest is certainly worthy of questioning in regards to the OC.

Picking Tommy up or dropping him off? Wasn't he supposed to be interviewing today?

Interesting, maybe people are interpreting things differently

They were 45th in offense in 21 and 60th in 22. Hopefully, it was all talent related but didn't see anything unique about what he ran with who he had. Isn't the whole point of wanting BoB gone because he wasn't innovative or creative?

I think I am gonna trust Saban over the posters on a website.
Posted on 2/2/23 at 12:35 pm to DT55Forever1
They were #17 and #20 in opponent/tempo adjusted metrics in offense in 2020 and 2021 and and #39 in 2022 (FEI).
Having a system that builds plays on top of each other and has an identity is the reason I wanted BoB gone. BoB's entire gameplan was random plays at random times with no rhyme or reason.
I've already said this is very much a TBD hire for me, but he's certainly not a terrible OC. And his scheme fits in very nicely with what we've been recruiting lately, our OL coach and the ability to run the ball when we choose that Saban has supposedly been wanting to move towards.
