I think it’s time for Saban to announce his retirement. Maybe he waits until after the season, but at this point he does not need to be on the sideline.

Saban hired Tosh to be DC and he had to be replaced quickly with Golding who stuck around for years, slowing turning the defense into a joke. He kept him for *years* after it was apparent he wasn’t very good at his job. He was replaced by Kevin Steele. Yawn.

Saban replaced Sark with a NFL retread that no one was excited about. Bill Obrien had a Heisman winner and helped get Bama to the title game but the offense was below standard in 2022. He was replaced by an underwhelming hire from Notre Dame.

Saban has made some hires that weren’t exciting, but they panned out and won national titles. So he got the benefit of the doubt when he hired the last few coordinators.

I talked myself into being excited for the season after the MTSU game. Yeah, the talent was worse but maybe Steele and Rees would help. Maybe the penalties would stop, maybe the defense would get better. Maybe the defense could create turnovers like they used to.

Well, that all came crashing down last night. The defense is still subpar, unable to create pressure or turnovers. The offense was exposed, and the team once again had double digit penalties against a competent opponent.

My concern is that the program, which peaked in 2020 and has been in decline each year since, is going to become mediocre REAL quick. It’s clear Saban is fine with what’s going on. He’s gotten old and soft and doesn’t expect perfection anymore. It’s time to get someone to head the program that can put a competent team on the field, which is something Saban can no longer do.

Don’t give me this “Oh, we just need a QB” silliness. This team is so far from the old Saban standard all over the place.

Saban has earned the right to stay as long as he wants.

This program was lost in the wilderness from the moment Stallings retired due to the meddling of an idiot AD, and Saban took it to heights even the Bear couldn’t reach.

Is it going to suck? Yes. But this is the price for that level of success, every coach that has built a dynasty has gone through a decline, and every fan base has had to endure it right along with them. That’s probably where we are now, and that’s where we will have to stay until Saban decides to hang it up.

Bottom line is Saban has done enough to call the shots on his retirement date, not the fan base.

Saban has earned the right to stay as long as he wants, but I can’t disagree with anything that you’re saying. The program no longer seems to be held to the standard it had from 2007 through about 2018. We can talk about all of the X’s and O’s issues, but at just a basic level the team seems to lack toughness and discipline.

Could it be? Possibly but I dont see it happening. One more bite of the apple is the old saying. I think if he were to win another title he would really consider it or if he loses 4-5 games this season as well. He could do TV broadcasting as he was allegedly close to doing that once already. He has said he doesnt want to ride the program down but thats alot easier said than done for someone like Saban.

My first call is to Lane/Sark. Offense is the driving force in football period. I think Tommy is ok really, but our Oline development is atrocious going back to last year at least. Bryce bailed out the Oline a lot last year. Now its them on an island and its glaringly bad.

Defense has been declining since Pruitt left. Id tell the NCAA to frick off and hire him as an analyst to serve suspension today at least but he would be involved. Kevin Steele was a low energy hire and uninspiring. If Saban keeps him around its over. I thought originally Steele was hired in a segway to getting finality from the Tennessee BS.

Offensively if the Oline isnt corrected nothing else really matters. Start there then QB.

Well I hope you'll be happy with Lane. Because Sark ain't coming.

Texas is an elite program. Alabama is a lateral move, at best, if I'm a coach looking forward.

Why?

MONEY. Alabama has a lot of money for football. But we don't have Texas money. And in this age of NIL, money is talking.

This. And where does every play start?

Antoine Caldwell.
William Vlachos.
Barrett Jones.
Ryan Kelly.
Ross Pierschbacher.
Bradley Bozeman.
Landon Dickerson.

We've had over a decade of All-Americans and high draft choices at that position. Vlachos may not have been an All-American, but he was damn good.

Guess what we don't have now.

Then address the rest of the OL.

The current options are not great. We either move Dalcourt back to C and insert Ferguson at RG or swap in Brockermeyer, who still looks incredibly undersized. I'd probably go with the former if you held a gun to my head, but neither is a clear fix and may end up being worse.

Personally, I would have Booker practice snapping for 3 hours a day until he has it down. He's our best lineman, he's incredibly smart, and he's a mean motherfricker.

Missed evaluations and players out of position...

I was calling Booker the day 1 starting center while he was still playing HS ball. The guy would have solidified the position for years.

I’m not ready to blame Rees. He looks pretty handicapped with his QB choices right now. Saban makes the call on the starter. The Dabol/Tua situation proved that.

I’m not ready blame coordinators.

The fact is that Saban let rot set in by keeping Golding and Bob around. That’s on Saban.

We’ve had top-ranked recruiting classes, but I have to believe we’ve been given the Bama bump. The talent just isn’t what it was. And that’s on substandard recruiters that Saban let hang around.

Player development is nonexistent. Dalcourt is as bad as he was the day he stepped on campus. Hell, he may be worse. We don’t have a QB that can complete a forward pass.

The “standard” has not been the standard for years. It just hasn’t been enforced.

Saban has turned into Pawpaw Saban and now he’s content with mediocrity.

Top offensive talent and offensive savants covered up the rot for a few years, but we don’t have that talent, now.

The coordinators have to have time to develop the players that Golding and Bob and Key and others ruined.

Saban has to decide to return to the standard or return to the lake.

NOBODY has earned the right to let the program go to hell. I don’t give a shite who they are.

One loss isn’t letting the program go to hell. But, it will if this apathetic attitude shite continues.

Could say the same for Alabama's program post-Bryant, and likely post-Saban.

I'd be worried that when Saban gets ready to leave, the phrase "one of Bear's boys" turns into "one of Bama's boys" and the search turns to the head coach of an ACC school in South Carolina.

That is how you go back into the wilderness.

Are you talking about the one who has won two National Championships- both against us including one where he beat the absolute shite out of Saban and Alabama in embarrassing fashion?

That dude?

Yeah, he sounds awful.

Yep, I am on the Saban train until it derails. I will say... he has always adapted. However, if you're a CEO.... you have your hand in everything. If you are subpar... your program is going to be subpar.

The one who got smashed by Duke?

Let me know how his stance on NIL and transfers keeps working out.

Stop living in 2018. Those days are gone.
