This is part of my issue unless we are somehow keeping it quiet. There is not reason at all for us to not be reaching out to him. He would fit perfectly for what we want to do.

(If Shack is leaving)

but I'm afraid it will drag like last season with Shack.

Well he only has until April 24th to make a draft decision and since he declared while retaining his eligibility last year I think he's either in or out this year, so he can't drag it on until July.

Agreed. We don't seem to be reaching out to a lot of purely off ball guards. It's all ball handlers and a few wings. Which makes sense if our departing contributors are going to be Quinerly, JD, Ellis, and Rojas.

Oats on the podcast re: the change from 2021's roster to 2022's roster

quote:

"That was, a little bit of our issue this year, we had some talented guys held over. But they weren't the most vocal guys from last year. We lost Herb - Jordan Bruner transferred in from Yale, but smart, and not afraid to speak up - spoke up in his one year with us. Petty spoke up a lot.

We had some coming back who knew how to play in the system but they weren't the most vocal guys and it was a different role for them......and we gotta work on the leadership stuff."

With him, I'm not thinking of the draft. When is the transfer portal deadline?

If he pulls that portal bullshite again Oats should tell him to pound sand and just move on. I don't think there's a deadline to go into the portal though. Just enrollment deadlines for coming out of it.

With Shack, wasn't part of the issue that he wanted some experience at the point? He came back anyway but didn't really get any PG work and wouldn't next season. I really feel like he's going to bail.

On that Field of 68 podcast last night, Oats said JD "will likely enter the draft and stay in." He also said we feel good about a couple of transfers. With JD and Holt leaving, we have "a couple" of spots. I'm with most here, we need a point guard, likely Llewelyn and/ or Sears. I'm good with both. Some worry about inside, but we have some players there. Bediako, Gary and Gurley can all play inside, the juco signee Pringle is an incoming junior rebounding machine, and Clowney is 6'9" and was just the MVP of the North/South Carolina All Star game. Also Miller can play anywhere at 6'8".

The number I've heard is that at most 5 guys from our 2021 roster will return.

Does anyone have any insight into Leonard Miller's recruitment? I know he announced a top 10 recently (8 schools, 2 pro routes). Has he set a date? Do we have a legit chance?

As a hypothetical, if Shack, Miles, and Gary all came back, this would be what we have:

PG: Bradley
Wing: Shack, Burnett, Miles, Miller, Griffen
Big: Bediako, Gurley, Gary, Clowney, Pringle

(I know those position groupings are sort of vague - is Gary a wing or a big, etc. - but it’s close enough).

That’s 11. Presumably we’d have two open slots there? Or is Gurley a non-counter?

You can never have too many athletic, long wings that are at least passable shooters, so I’d still like to add Bridges. But if you look at that roster, we already have a pretty good bit of size on paper.

We do absolutely need another ball handler - at the least a combo guard.

Anyway, if we’ve learned anything over the years its that those 11 guys probably won’t all be on the team next year. Even if it makes sense for them to return individually. But it’s presumably close to what we’ll have.
