I object to playing this series. We have purposefully avoided South and UAB for years, so as not to legitimize their programs any more than they already are. Both have fallen off some, but back in the 90's, they were both scary mid-majors that would like nothing more than to hang an L on the state flagship school. USA got paired with Bama in the NCAA tourney one year and proceeded to hand us our arse. These are no win games for us. Win and you were supposed to; lose and you boost their program. In a state where basketball talent is not exactly rampant.
Let me be clear; I don't fear UAB or USA, but we don't need to give those type of potentially formidable mids a leg up. Imagine having a St. Louis or a Loyola-Chicago in our back yards. Not a good idea.

Keep forgetting Gillespie is coming back, nice to see that injury won't be the end of his college career

Herbert Jones Signs Second-Largest Contract by a Second Round NBA Draft Pick
The former Crimson Tide standout inks three-year deal with the New Orleans Pelicans
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Former Alabama standout Herbert Jones has signed the second-largest contract ever by a player who was drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans organization.
The three-year deal, 5.4 million dollar deal was signed on Monday morning.
Jones has shined in NBA Summer League play, showing his versatility across the Pelicans' four games. The Greensboro, Ala., native is averaging 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks in 21.7 minutes per contest. His plus/minus total of +12 across four games is tied for 14th best among all players competing in the Vegas Summer League.
Head Coach Nate Oats Comments
"What a tremendous achievement for Herb. He has worked so hard to make his dream come true and now to see it come to fruition is incredible. New Orleans knew what they were getting when they drafted Herb, but I think he has shown how much value he can bring to their organization. He does everything the right way – high character, great teammate, incredible work ethic, high IQ, and so on. I could not be happier for him and his family."

He'll eventually to avoid going to Dreamland, and just buy their sauce in a store. Though he is from up north, so maybe he thinks ribs are supposed to be chewy.

Hell yeah! Herb signed the 2nd largest contact ever for a 2nd round pick. That dude fricking earned it! I actually had my buddy in New Orleans send me a text with this article.
Pelican fans are loving Bama right now.

Love it for herb, one of the best bama basketball players/ambassadors to come through in a while.
The south alabama game is one we should win, but is a lose lose situation. Ritchie Riley has that program rolling and they got a lot of high major transfers this off season. If we win? We’re supposed to. If we lose? How does Alabama lose to USA blah blah blah. I understand playing the instate programs, but USA won’t be a pushover by any means.

I disagree. "Purposely avoiding" schools is no way to be a winner. You don't pretend you are better, you be better. I have had season tickets for 40 plus years and would much rather pay to see us play in state schools preseason than Mercer or Western Kentucky, both of whom beat us in recent years. UAB under Andy Kennedy is getting good as is South AL. LSU plays bunches of in state schools, Tenn plays Memphis, Ky Louisville, Fla/ Fla State/ SC/ Clemson, and so on. We beat Jax State last year, Samford the year before. Same in football. I would much rather play those schools than New Mexico State. People buy tickets to see good games - last year's all SEC football was the best schedule ever. I really think the old idea of "keeping them down" is stale. Besides, we need revenge on both UAB and South AL for when they beat us before (UAB in NIT and South AL in NCAA in Atlanta). Those losses did not kill our program.

Oakland is coming to Tuscaloosa November 19th

That is not accurate at all. We were up by 16 at the half and then the officials decided to start evening things up by calling every ticky tack foul in the second half. They ended up winning by 2 after shooting 35 FT's to our 10. We had 24 fouls to their 10. Ansley was unstoppable in the first half and fouled out in the second. Horry, Benoit and Askins all finished with 4 fouls.

Yeah I’d much rather watch us play South Alabama than someone like Oakland

While I don't disagree, Oakland has a good shot of winning the Horizon this year. They're a solid program.

Motor men never go out of style with recruiters. So that's why I like what Alex Anamekwe can be at the college level. The bouncy 6-6 F from McKinney (TX) was outstanding at the Fantastic 40 in Vegas last week. He said Utah State, Texas A&M, Alabama, Texas Tech are involved.

You are correct. I was at that game in Atlanta. We were killing them 1st half. Fouls on Ansley were ridiculous and really hurt us because they had no answer for him. And they weren't handing our arse to us. "Peanut Butter and Jelly " (I think those were their guards nicknames) were just jacking 3's from 25 feet that went in. 2nd half was one of those nightmares like Providence game in the Sweet 16. Sometimes teams just get hot - like us against LSU there last year.
