That's probably fair. JQ will probably be better than last year though. We dont know about JD really, but I'm not expecting a defensive stopper by any means.

Darius Miles needs to become a good defender if he is gonna earn the minutes he wants. I dont know if he is gonna be a guy who can defend well against guards, but maybe.

I see those 3 in together during late game situations.

Quin, JD, Shack, Ellis, and Gurley would definitely be our most potent offensive lineup. It's the small ball, spark plug lineup. But it probably won't be common.

I was just predicting the starting lineup for game 1 when I put those 3 together. I could see us going with an experienced lineup for game 1 since it's in a tournament v Iona.

Burnett would be my guess, if he is really shooting as good as people say he is in practice.

If we play against some teams that dont have strong guard play then I could see Oats using that lineup to just run teams out of the gym. Especially, like you say, late in games when maybe teams are in foul trouble or tired.

If we catch some teams that are dealing with injuries or into their bench with some bench players like we had at PG under Grant and Avery, watch out mother frickers. Oats system can really take advantage of teams that have trouble scoring.

If he is shooting as good as they say he is in practice, then he's gonna step into Petty's shoes real nice. If he is really shooting that well, and he plays defense like he did last year for Tech, he will be hard to keep on the bench.

The depth on this team is gonna be insane. I imagine there is some big time competition for playing time. But Oats is gonna have to find a way to make sure everyone eats.

As fast as we play and as many possesions as we get there is enough to go around for all the top 8 or 9 guys in the rotation. I think our guard depth is perfect now that we got Shack back.

I agree. We had 9 guys average 11 minutes or more last year and I see this team running out something similar. I actually doubt we have anyone average over 30 minutes on this team like Petty did last year, so that spreads a few more minutes out as well.

By the end of the year though, I think that line-up ends up shrinking more into a 8 man line-up, with us running out 3 bigs between the four of Gary, Gurley, Tchikou, and Bediako. Which three will probably depend on if either three separate themselves or if we need to run a bigger or smaller line-up that game.

Minutes from last year:

Petty - 31.3
Shack - 29.3
Jones - 27.3
JQ - 25.0
Primo - 22.4
Bruner - 18.1
Ellis - 17.5
Reese - 15.1
Rojas - 11.1
Gary - 9.4
All others under 5 minutes per game and under 20 games played

My prediction for next year (as long as no-one sustains a season-ending injury during the season):

JQ - 29
Shack - 29
Gurley - 26
JD - 25
Ellis - 22
Burnett - 20
Tchikou - 16
Gary - 16
Bediako - 14
Miles - 9

* I know this is more than 200 minutes, it's 206 in fact, but I think this takes into account games missed by some to small injuries and the like.

So with this considered, I think our starting line-up has one of Bediako, Tchikou, or Gary starting alongside Gurley with Ellis playing the 3, like we did last year with Bruner, Herb, and often Primo or Ellis, but I think we will often see Ellis play the 4 and have a 4 wing, 1 big line-up on the floor together in other situations and to close out games.

This area of our game is what concerns me. Herb is gonna be a huge loss for us there.

With so much roster flexibility, we can assume our line up will vary based on the opponent. I don't think it really matters who we see start each game.

It's definitely an exciting roster. Hopefully, the distractions and outside influences are kept at a minimum and this team can gel and have a great season.

Oats has a good problem figuring out how to use everyone.

Small typo, my bad. I think from the context you could see I meant the 3, but just fixed it.

We will miss Herb's versatility on that end, but I think we will overall be a good defensive team assuming everyone buys in like they did last year. The only guys on the roster who I think are physically limited to being average defenders are Shack and JQ.

The feeling of having a team where we have to chose between starting Jaden Shackleford vs. Jahvon Quinerly or Juwan Gary vs. Noah Gurley is something I've never experienced as a Bama fan

Not to mention several returning 4-star players and a coach with a track record of improving his players

JQ
Shack
Ellis
Gary
Gurley

I think this will be the opening day lineup. I really want to throw JD in the lineup but JQ/JD/Shack is just way too small and I rather have a primary ballhandler be subbed in first. If Tchikou or Bediako step up, Gurley gets moved to 4 and Gary comes off the bench.

The main thing is with Shack back, we keep our deep depth and most of our lineup flexibility. It'll be interesting to see his role on the team this year. Outside of Tchikou, the most interesting player to watch for me is going to be Burnett. We already know he's a lockdown defender but if you buy into the hype that his shooting is back, it's going to be extremely difficult to keep him off the floor.

So can we play tonight or?

We will still be solid defensively...Top 3 in the country? Probably not but I bet we will be top 20-30
