hmmm. Someone on reddit is insisting we are 16th, not 9th, in kenpom average.

if you go by the past 6 seasons instead of 5 it would drop to 16.1. seems oats's first season still had some semblance of sanity in regards to scheduling, lol

Nice video, and pretty fair takes. Nice to see Goodman give Mallette some love. And honestly, it's pretty much what I expect. We should have a very good backcourt. But our frontcourt is where we're going to earn our tournament seed, and where there's a lot of uncertainty.

Seeing Sherrell's progression has most of us feeling positive about him taking the next step in his development. And Williamson being able to adjust to the SEC speed and physicality will be important. It's fair to say that the lack of a proven rim protector is a why we aren't top 5 preseason. I'd say a B+ is a decent off-season grade. Oats got dealt a few bad cards, but did well to pull it all together considering.

Can Sherrell build off a strong finish to last season, can Bol Bowen maintain his 3pt efficiency on increased volume, and can Allen, Jemison, Bristow, and Mallette be the glue wings that we sorely lacked last year? No to all 3 and we're probably going to be disappointing. Yes to all 3 and we will compete for a 1 seed. This roster has a low floor and massive ceiling from what I've seen. So a B+ is probably about right.

I haven’t been able to find an official box score yesterday from Canada’s game but Holloway had 15 points and was 4/8 from deep. They play Georgetown today.

It would be cool as hell to have a neutral game every year alternating between Huntsville and Mobile. frick Montgomery.

There's really no where to play one in Montgomery. Gottfried played at Ala St in 2005. Pretty sure Hornets Coach Rob Spivery and Gottfried's dad were buddies. That's why that game happened.

I used the poor people payment plan when it first came open so it wouldn’t hurt as bad and so I wouldn’t forget.

I think it’d be cool to play in Montgomery. There are still a ton of fans in Montgomery, Prattville, Enterprise, etc where Montgomery would be an easier trek. Do one there instead of one of the 3k fans at Coleman because it’s Christmas break game.

It’s good to hear the Canadian coach is trying to push Holloway to be more physical and not be a turnstile on defense. He was almost unplayable last year due to his defense, and that was when we still had decent rim protection.

Not going to lie, given our lack of rim protection this year, I’m going to cringe every time Holloway steps on the court in a big game. Helping our offense score 1.2 PPP won’t matter if your defense is so bad that the other team is getting 1.3 and putting fouls on your best front court players as they try to cover for you.

I disagree here. I look for Sherrell to take a Bediako like leap in rim protection. He has it in him, he was blocking shots nonstop in the McDonalds AA game a couple years ago.

I think our interior defense with our starting unit is going to be great. TBB is very good on defense

Certainly would be a welcomed revelation, but I’ll have to see it before believing it this year. I thought we were going to be great last year and while we ended up being decent or “good,” I wouldn’t say it was great and fell a bit below expectations IMO. Maybe I should have used “reduced rim protection” instead of “lack of,” but I’m hesitant to believe Sherrell and TBB exceed Grant & Cliff in that area (think Sherrell as a backup last year was better defensively than our backup C this year as well).

It’s been discussed, but Sherrell got in foul trouble some last year. We can’t afford our guards not staying in front of guys on the perimeter this year. Give me Philon, Wrightsell (assuming he’s back healthy), or some of the new guys in the big games unless Holloway has materially improved his defense and rebounding against top talent. The Canadian coach said it well, top talent and top coaching will “hunt the defensive liability” all game if he’s out there. It’s just the reality. Here’s hoping our perimeter defense is a material step up from last year (which may cause Sherrell and TBB to actually look better than Grant and Cliff).

Edit: should have added Mallette too. I’m super high on him and posted several times that I thought he should have been getting more minutes last year until they decided to redshirt him. He gives 100% at all times
