Agree but completely trust Oats to find the guards he needs to run the team. Man is it good to have a coach. Actually can't wait to see what the new roster looks like after it all shakes out.

I mean, if Philon goes pro as expected, we have exactly 1 guard returning who contributed significantly this season.

That’s true, I wasn’t thinking about Philon going pro.

Feel like Philon is right on the fringe of the go/no-go decision on the draft. He didn't really have a stand-out tournament though he was hardly bad. He was a late 1st type of projection by consensus of draftniks before the tournament and I don't think he increased his value by his play in the tournament too much to change that projection.

This is just my opinion: I think his decision to stay will come down to if Alabama's NIL offer makes it worth it for Philon to bet on himself increasing his stock dramatically with another season.

Coulda forecasted this in the Fall when it was stated he was taking a redshirt year.

Why on earth in this day of nil would you ever redshirt any player. Maybe nass wasn't ready but he could have given this team something.

Shocked face (sarcasm). Anytime we redshirt someone they go into the portal

Kid's ceiling is above anyone we've had at Bama under Oats except for Miller. He was ranked #1 in his class, over Flagg, for nearly a year before falling down the rankings. This one hurts. Our staff overplayed their hand.

Not a single bit of that is true except that Naas was at one point ranked #1 in his class.

For the kid's sake. If he's not going to have a role, he still has 4 years of eligibility. Having a reputation for treating the players right goes a long way in recruiting. And it's the right thing to do.

I firmly believe Naas' ceiling is that high.

Now, he was ranked that high in part because of Covid preventing in person talent evaluation, but he has a loads of physical talent that you can't just develop.

I'm not even saying he will for sure reach his ceiling. Just that it's there, and its sky high. We just saw what athletic, tall players can do. We needed him this last year and this coming year. Athletic length killed us all year on both ends of the floor.

Redshirting top 100 players in this day and age is a terrible choice, no matter how deep your team is.

Yes. If, after summer and fall camp, they are told they won’t be in the main rotation or receive meaningful minutes, some would prefer to redshirt . Most HS won’t but you have to be honest with them

Lol this is insane. He could become a good player, but trying to paint him as potentially our 2nd best talent in the last 6 years is a bit rich. Most of us projected that he would red shirt going into the year.

Want to know who was previously #1 in their class as well? Kris Parker. A player who we also red-shirted and transferred our. Averaged 2.8 PPG this season.

I hope Naas shows out, but history tells us that former #1 overall recruits that drop out of the 5-star range usually don't pan out.

Considering that he spent most of his senior year falling in the ratings and he couldn't get minutes on this team when we needed guard depth, I'm betting that his ceiling is not higher than Herb Jones, etc.

Oats praised his development midseason.

“When he’s at his peak, it looks like he should be an NBA player,” Oats said in February. “Can we get that every time or a lot more consistent than what it is? It’s hard for me to say right now just because he’s been out with illness and injuries so much. So right now we’re just trying to get him to continue to gain weight because he kind of lost a lot of what he gained when he got sick. So, kind of where that’s at.

In his limited time we saw him he looked much fluid than Jarin Stevenson. He definitely could’ve been someone we used for a 3 and D type of role after Wrightsell and Mallette went down. He looked like a decent player against Wake Forest.

Gut feeling as of now:

1: Holloway and one of Philon/Burries/Portal
2: Portal (Wooley/Bethea/Griffen), Mallette, Hannah
3: Reid or Stevenson (one stays, one goes), Allen
4. Mo D or Portal (Bol Bowen?), Jemison
5. Sherrell, Portal (Williamson?)
