I've said from the beginning that Sears is not and should not be point guard. He's not quick enough in space and is left hand dominant. In Oats offense, you have to be able to penetrate the defense with the dribble to get into the lane and score or dish.

With Sears at the point, the offensive possession time is extended and he often dominates the ball causing a stagnant possession. He should have been running the 2 all along with Holloway and Philon rotating at the 1 or play all three together if able defensively.

Without Wrightsell, Oats definitely needs to move Sears over to the 2. And if he wants to save Mallette for his senior year, I'm adding Naas as a back up 6'7" guard.

Different topic, Oats has to adjust his defensive system. Their defensive positioning is awful. I understand that he wants to pressure the ball to increase the tempo and force a 2pt shot instead of a 3pt, but we cannot continue to pressure the ball so high while our off defenders are playing almost complete deny. We're setting our self up for dribble penetration and fouls like crazy. The shot clock is already short increasing the tempo. He needs his ball defender to play off some. His off ball denial would be more effective that way. I know he's not a fan, but with our athleticism and depth, I'd utilize more 3/4 and 1/2 court zone pressures to increase tempo and cause more turnovers. When you use those pressures, you cause their forwards and centers to be more involved in ball handling which increases your chances to cause turnovers. It also limits your opponent's ability to isolate a weaker defender or someone in foul trouble.

You’re correct in everything you said. Sears is killing our pace and launching threes early in the shot clock and missing. It was evident from the second game he was holding our offense back. He’s still a heck of a player but point guard he’s not.

Zero issue with him launching early threes in the shot clock. He's a 38% career 3 point shooter. If he shoots his averages against Purdue and Oregon, we are undefeated.

He isn't taking threes that we don't want him to be taking. He has just been in a slump so far for whatever reason.

Agree he may be better suited as an off-ball 2-guard once we get into the half court set.

Sears seems to be having a lot harder time getting to the rim than he did last season. He was actually REALLY good on the blow-bys and finishing strong at the rim last year for an undersized guard. His ability to get downhill has been subpar this year. That is a mystery.

I'd like to see what Sears three point shooting % is by half. I think he gets tired. He's averaging a lot of minutes per game.

Aside from quickness differences. Philon and Holloway have better Assist/Turnover numbers.

I'd love to have Philon or Holloway bringing it up on the break with Sears waiting downcourt for a catch and shoot. He could probably drive better from the 2 as well because he'd have defenders running at him to cover the 3pt shot.

Also, SOG, can you help me with the +/- for Clifford? Just curious. His inability to pull defenders away from the rim is an issue. Defensively, he along with others are having a harder time with the drop coverage and extended ball pressure allowing the opponent drive.

*and I didn't downvote you DLev--someone else*

I'm all for using all players.

Pull Naas Cunningham & Houston Mallette's redshirt.

We was better when we used all players and I'm just being real.

Is Wrightsell done for the year?

We definitely need Mallette to play if Latrell is gonna be out.

Oats said we are considering Burning Mallettes redshirt and will be seeking a medical for Wrightsell.

So basically trading out Mallette for Wrightsell on next years team. Assuming Wrightsell is the same player but players never are post Achilles….but Athleticism and leaping is not a big part of Wrightsellls game so he may be OK.

He’ll be aight. It’s 2024, not 1994.

That is a huge loss for this years team. The best 3 point shooter on the team by a mile.

Naas has springs for legs and is going to surprise some people, but he still needs time to fill his frame.

Dude is roughly the same height as Lil' Mo and is about 40 pounds lighter (if not more).

It’s a good consolation prize having Mallette for Wrightsell. I feel Mallette has better length and is a bit lesser of a shooter but it may help defensively. We will definitely miss Wrightsell though.

fricking sucks to hear. You can tell he worked hard in the off-season, trying to add more elements to his offensive game. Hopefully he can get a medical red shirt, though I'm afraid he might be done playing college basketball.

I saw this article from on3, and it seems like Dybantsa is probably going to be going with the biggest offer.

quote:

Speaking with Ace Dybantsa, AJ’s father, The Tribune reported that there were schools that offered the family over $1 million for AJ to play a single year of basketball. But in the end, Utah Prep won out with an offer for an ownership stake in the school and a $600,000 name, image and likeness deal.

They have him an ownership stake in the school. Lol. They aren't fricking around with their negotiations.

There's no reason to redshirt anyone these days because they will be hitting the transfer portal anyway.

The offense needs shooters and Naas Cunningham and Houston Mallette are shooters!

Everything in that article is fricking disgusting.

quote:

Built on the site of Diamond Ranch Academy, which was forced to shut down by the state of Utah following the death of a student, Utah Prep rose from the ashes with staff from both Diamond Ranch and the former Real Salt Lake Basketball Academy.

Mallette has one year of eligibility remaining. He can't transfer. And burning his last year of college ball if he's only going to be playing as a depth piece is doing him a disservice. It should be his decision.

I agree but Houston Mallette would be getting heavy minutes if I was coaching because he's a knockdown shooter with length.

We don't have enough knockdown shooters on the floor right now.

I totally agree that if we are only going to use him sparingly then let him keep his redshirt.
