'm not sure if anyone is as strong as Houston on the boards. They have a bunch of 6'8-6'10" 230 lbs+guys, who are athletic. That's a lot of beef to box out and steal boards. Us being in early foul trouble made it that much harder.

This is why I keep harping about Tchikou.I think he might be a little heavier than Bediako and ready or not we were one foul from having to stick him out there vs Houston as Gary had four. You weren't far from it vs Gonzaga.

Get the man ready. He's 6'11 230 athletic with a wingspan and Gary is being asked to be something he is not.

I don’t understand Gonzaga being in front of us even with their losses only being Duke and us.

We beat them head to head and have one less loss

Houston's rebounding is a major reason for their success, but it also can cause them to struggle with transition defense. We had 18 fast break points in the game.

The shooting percentages were about the only stats we had going for us much of the game. We weren't shooting or hitting 3s, turning it over, couldn't defensive rebound, you name it. It shows that this team really has a chance to do something special this season when we clean up some of that. The only question mark I have moving forward is whether or not Gurley is going to become more of a factor.
I've been disappointed in his athleticism. I thought he was more explosive. We need more from him. Also, not using KAH or Alex in the game with all our foul trouble tells me that Oats doesn't really trust them yet.

All in all, it was a great to win when some things weren't going our way.

#6 in the AP

Remember that feeling of being worried about our OOC performance potentially keeping us out of the NCAA tourney again, and again, and again? It seems like so long ago but it was only 12 months. Man have things changed in a year!!!! Love this staff, team, culture, etc.!

P.S. If Arizona cardinals lose tonight, I don’t know what I’ll do. Braves World Champs, Bama football SEC champs and defending national champs (and #1 in playoffs), Bama Basketball defending SEC champs and #6 (and having beat one of the top 5), and the Packers would be #1 in NFC with 4 to play. I don’t think I’ve ever had a better year of sports…and hoping if there is a disappointment going forward, let it be the Packers. Bama to final four in Basketball is long overdue!!!!

I’d love for the geniuses over at the AP to explain UCLA>Gonzaga>Alabama when the games that were played said the exact opposite.

Not sure if posted, but this is a fantastic breakdown of how Oats exploited Houston's pick and roll defense to get Shackelford open twice for 3 down the stretch.

Iona discount would be my only guess. Zags beat UCLA by 20 and we beat Zags in Seattle pretty handedly. If we don’t lose to Iona, we’re probably top 3 right now

Said another way, we have the worst loss but the best win. Guess the win wasn’t enough to make up for the “bad” loss.

Here's a Nate Oats interview on Bald Men in Campus...

It's a Spotify link. But you can probably find it elsewhere. It starts at 38:20.

Y’all think they will move the Colorado State game to TV with it being a top 25 matchup now?

Great stuff. Oats is an NBA level matchup schemer and tweaker on offense. It's something we haven't ever had at this program and it's so damn fun. The back and forth adjustments noted in that segment are awesome.

The additional swap and screen on the Shack 3's late in the game........holy shite that's amazing. And you know that Sampson saw it happening in real time and was kicking himself for not having a chance to adjust after the last variation play the possession before.

Transition offense is fun, but a lot of our set plays are just things of beauty. That's the biggest difference I've noticed from year to year under Oats. We keep getting more and more comfortable running sophisticated stuff in the half court.

Off topic, but Maryland fans seem really fricking arrogant. They are convinced that Nate Oats would practically teleport to them if they so much as even hinted at being interested in him. They have such a lofty view of their athletic department, especially when comparing it to ours. As if we are poor or something

Those 2 plays we ran in the last 4 minutes for Shack were NBA Playoff level stuff.

Truly think that our biggest competition for keeping Oat around is Michigan State and the NBA. Outside of maybe Kansas coming open, I don't have any other concerns. But I could absolutely see a smart NBA franchise with a good set up making a run at him in a few years.

The Crimson Tide moved up three spots after its 83-82 victory over Houston last Saturday night in Coleman Coliseum.

It's pretty odd. They basically had a great 4 year run under Gary Williams from 2001-2003, and outside of that are very close to being the same program as us and 20 other good but not great programs. They were the most "regular season" team of all time before 2001/2002, the regular butt of jokes about how Gary Williams and Maryland always found ways to lose. They lost all their rivals when they left for the B1G and are now in this weird place where they are on TV playing Rutgers and Northwestern in basketball games and you catch yourself going "Wait, what?".

Oats has a Top 5 team right now with a Top 3 recruiting class coming in. If you have an available job right now your timing ain't right. Sorry.

PS - We're super rich.
