The refs were absolute dogshit, no doubt about it, but bad reffing is pretty consistent in cbb. Hard to blame them with how poorly we shot.

I largely agree with Oats philosophy of rim and 3.
BUT I think at the very least our guards need to develop a solid floater game.
At times our guards driving get a step, but you just know the help defender is going to block it. A consistent floater forces that help defender to step out.

We picked the wrong year to be a 1 seed.
None are left.
And only one 2 seed that still has to play tonight

KState/FAU/SDSU/Princeton/Creighton: one will be playing for a national title.
That’s why this sucks so much. We may make a Final Four or win a national championship eventually, but we will never ever have an easier path

That's a good point. I'm not sure we even attempted any mid-range jumpers the entire game. The offense was just sloppy and out of sync. The difference between how sdsu ran their offense and how we ran ours was pretty glaring. They were fairly fluid even when we were playing good d, and we seemed to be playing street ball most of the game.
Oats is philosophically committed to all shots coming either behind the arc or at the rim. He has a lot of analytics in his favor on this stance.
I agree with him but the problem is he's never had a guard who is strong through contact here at Alabama. Our guards are trying to get their shot off around contact.
With the type of guards we have had (where they aren't going to out jump bigs), I feel like you gotta have the pull up jumper when they're really boxing them in at the rim.
I thought JD Davison was going to be this guy but he was a major disappointment.

You can be married to a system and still make adjustments. Hell, even triple option teams mix in a pass.
Oats has a great system but we can’t be so live and die by the three pointer come March

Dont get me wrong I would much rather made the sweet 16 and lose than not make it and Oats has made it two out of three years. He is doing a great job, he is a young coach it takes coaches a long time to win a natty, this is how long it took these coaches to win one
Jim Calhoun (Uconn): 27 years
Jim Boeheim (Cuse): 27
Gary Williams (MD): 24
Lute Olson (Zona): 24
Jay Wright (Nova): 22
Dean Smith (UNC): 21
John Calipari (UK): 20
John Wooden (UCLA): 18
Roy Williams (UNC): 17
Coach K (Duke): 16
Bill Self (Kansas): 15
Pitino (UK): 14
Oats has been coaching college 8 years and has two sweet 16s and has made the tournament 6 out of 7 years he's been a HC. I am glad we have him.
(tournament was canceled the covid year)

And Quinnerly trying to shoot finger-rolls from nose level.
Get the ball up over your head.
The move that Sears made late was money.

I think in college basketball though, your guard who always tries to finish through contact is going to get a ton of charge calls.
The way block/charge is called in college makes rim and three a lot harder.

Don’t disagree. Nate Oats May end up being or May already be the best basketball coach we’ve ever had. The larger issue is how this program historically cannot seem to achieve up to its potential when it has had good teams.

Naw they picked the right one. Bad shooting and poor coaching led to the loss

I do hope Oats can exchange those timeouts for Cracker Barrel gift cards or something. He loves to keep them in his pocket

t’s a tough pill to swallow. Thought we should have pressed more when we went up in the second half. SDSU looked awkward trying to run with us.when we went back to half court D, they settled back down to their comfort pace and methodically beat us.
I hope we keep CNO and his style versus prison ball. We could use a taller guard or two…, or maybe permission to shoot a 4-6 footer when the other team is packing your rim attacks.
I hope Bradley stays and works on his shooting.
Unhappy with the officiating. But realize if we hit just 25% of threes, we advance.
Great season for the program.
Well said!

The part in all of this that just pisses me off the most
We’ll probably never see the bracket open up like this for us ever again
This was a CRAZY set up we could have had to get to the final 4
Man, just all around hurts tonight

Microcosm of the program historically. Just when things seem to be going great, the anvil falls out of the sky on our heads.

No one seeds made it this year, just a bunch of 25 year old covid year guys being allowed to play prison ball out there.

Miller has not been 100% since the SEC Tournament.

Right, frankly, I am one of those guys that prefers the NBA game to CBB. I probably see the problem in a very NBA framework and forget that the college game has shitty rules and enforcement just like NFL v. CFB.
The Warriors are a similar analogue to what Oats does in the NBA but they even let their best scorers find space in the midrange when defenses collapse down on their dribble drives while denying kick out passes.

This team lost because they weren’t physical enough. Point blank period.
Did you miss the part where they forgot how to shoot threes the last quarter of the season? That was the difference tonight and almost cost Bama the SEC.
You can’t have all your guards stop playing winning basketball at the same time and win a championship, doesn’t work that way.
Sears went from borderline AA to barely playable.
Bradley went from freshman AA track to a train wreck.
Griffen went from a knockdown shooter to shooting below 30% from three.
JQ kept them afloat down the stretch, but had an off night.
One of those guys had to get it together and it’s a F4 minimum.
Then you top it off with Clowney fouling out with 3 points and your all-time best player in program history going 3-17 and you are gonna lose in the tournament, period.
