Griffen should be one of the top guys on the team in terms of minutes. He has experience in the system. He has great size for his position. He usually defends well and he can score at all three levels.

I know that Oats likes to experiment with more guys getting PT early in the seaeon. Then come conference play it will be a tighter rotation. But Griff has had an underwhelming start. Wasnt there some talk before TCU that he was banged up a bit?

He should be like a Keon Ellis or young Levi Randolph level player for us. Solid all around with a chance of catching fire.

Just one turnover in 46 minutes.

From what I’ve seen, there’s been a lot of “almost turnovers” from several players that we either got a good bounce, out hustled the other team on a loose ball, or got bailed out by ref in these first 2 games.

I didn’t get the benefit of good replays, but it looked like Griffen got bailed out twice by refs last night. One he slipped while driving out of control and they called a phantom foul, the other he put his head down and got a block that easily could have been a charge. Think there was another in the first game that he drove the basket and jumped not knowing where he was going with the ball and was pretty lucky it got deflected to either one of our guys or out of bounds. He also went 0-9 from 3 in the scrimmages and forced a three in the first game that was off rythym with a man in his face (he did have a good one in the first game coming off a screen that he made). He hasn’t been catastrophic by any means, but hasn’t been sharp or “improved” either. Hope he gets it going before our December stretch and keeps up the hustle/defense while he works on it.

South lost to Mobile, an naia school. So yeah, I'd say they are down. Honestly, you lose to an naia school, i don't care if it's the first game of the season, just go ahead and fire them.

we do need a real pg and griffin could be playing better but it's 2 games

the real question is when was the last time we scored 100+ in 3 straight?

This thread seems too negative for a team doing so well. Reading the thread youd think we were terrible.

No we are not. This should be a Top 15 team with the potential to be better.

We could be elite with a solid point man. So many shooters and scorers.

As far as the PG play I thought we took off when Estrada started playing PG in the last game. Sears seemed to struggle a lot with it in the first half.

I don't think people are saying that. Just that our defense needs a lot of work and we don't have a ball handler (hence why Nelson does so much of it) and that could be an issue in the tournament.

We're top 30 in defense on KenPom and have played two good offensive teams. I'm not worried about the defense we have a ton of length. I do think Wague is gonna end up getting the most minutes at the 5 due to his defense, he adds some rim protection. He played 10 minutes last game and had 2 blocks.

I don't think Grant plays PG out of need, Estrada is a good PG and Sears is solid.

Top 30 with preseason numbers baked in.

I removed the preseason numbers on Torvik and we are actually #235 on defense(but #1 on offense)

We’re way better than the 200-something ranked defense, we’re likely gonna be top 30 in adjusted defense on kenpom all season.

The reason Grant Nelson is playing point forward at times is because Coach Oats is just adding value to him.

He knows how to get guys to the NBA!!

Plus it creates mismatches cause Nelson usually has a bigger guy on him he can blow by. If they try to guard him with a smaller guy he can post them up.

Having a 6’11 guy that can handle the ball as well as Nelson is a huge mismatch advantage.

Nelson and Johnni Broome have been the best two “bigs” in the Sec this season Statistically.

Allen Flanagan (yep that one, he's at Ole Miss now)
and Estrada have been the best two guards in the conference so far statistically.

Still a long way to go but I love what I see so far from both of those guys.

Looks like the Ohio State game is on CBS sports Network. But for the second game, it will either be cbssn or flo sports. My guess is whoever plays Santa Clara will end up on flo.

Apparently flo sports is some kind of BS streaming service that charges $30 month. So I really hope we win the first game.

Sears has always been more of a short 2-guard. Estrada plays more like a true PG. I imagine we'll see more of him and Nelson running the offense when they're in the game. I think Sears (as well as other guards like Wrightsell and Cosby) is getting a lot of reps at PG simply because of the competition we are facing. In order to reach our potential, we need more guards that can run the offense well. Right now, our only guard that does a great job of setting folks up is Estrada.
