Oats could be the most successful coach in the history of Alabama basketball and take this program to places it's never been.......cant really do that at Mich State, Kentucky, or any of the blue blood programs

DeBoer coukdve done the same thing at Washington but he chose to come to Alabama. The top programs in a particular sport are always gonna be attractive.

I think there are only a handful of jobs Oats would leave for though, Kentucky, Duke, UNC ect

Trilly Donovan is a legit insider on the national level. He's not in the media, he's anonymous, but dude has scoops in CBB nationwide.

Two different coaches.

Two different situations.

One of his daughters goes to Alabama right now and he has two more to go. I think another factor in all this is Mrs. Crystal Oats.

Nate is our Billy Donovan, who turned down UK more than once. Win a couple of NCs then cash out in the NBA. Our he could be Jim Calhoun and never leave.

Will Duke, UNC, or other traditional powers outside the B1G and SEC be able to compete with the P2 financially?

I wouldn’t hold it against Oats to take any of those jobs, but I’m not sure we fully know what the effects of a true Power 2 setup are going to be.

Have any of those programs hired outside of the family? UK is only one I can think of, and IU.

I've said from year one, if/when he leaves, it will be for the NBA. Could a blueblood steal him? Maybe, but by all accounts, he's very happy at Bama and appreciative of the trust Byrne had in him. He's already turned Bama into a perennial national contender. I think Byrne will match any offer that another team will realistically make. There's probably as many cons to taking a blueblood job as there are pros.

And some of y'all need to stop giving yourselves ulcers over, "pay him/build it" nightmares. Byrne has this under control.

Carolina coaches since Dean have all been Dean disciples. Duke has only had 1 hire post-K, but they seem to be going down the same path.

Still very much think the biggest threat to him going to another college coaching job is Michigan State due to the respect he has for Izzo and the program. However, as naive as it may be, I think he's happy here, thinks he can get the types of players here to win a national title and gets all the money he needs for everything he asks for. That may be different in 3-4 years, but as of now I think he's worked hard to built a machine and he wants to get it over the hump.

People don't get that the arena project is largely for the fans. The players and coaches spend 99% of their time in the training facilities, which are very nice and which Oats and Byrne have plans to upgrade even further. What's more, our NIL is extremely competitive in basketball.

Our home record the last few years is as good as anyone in CBB. A new arena would be nice but isn't going to move the needle much for any coach worth his salt.

Hopefully he’s not a Tubby Smith that leaves an SEC program after a few good seasons for Kentucky!

Unfortunately it's all about choices. Oats has made it clear that his preferential allocation of resources is (1) NIL and then a distant (2) Arena. He'd prefer we do both (like we all do), but he also knows all the stuff CPA said above regarding the things he can sell to prospects (NIL, training facilities, his program).

He wants an arena. But he wants resources to bring in and then train and develop the best players in the country more, and we currently give him those things.

UNC absolutely does not make hires outside of the UNC family. They're really the only blue blood like that though. Duke is too early to say one way or the other, but the rest of that cohort will definitely make hires from outside the family.

I agree. I don't know how well someone with his coaching/playing background would go over with an NBA locker room, but all it'll take is one Final Four run for that talk to start given his relatively young age and pro-friendly coaching philosophy. I think he'd need to go to a franchise with a strong culture and mature locker room already in place to make it work. He'd probably be out at a place like Detroit or Washington before 2 full seasons.

can we please stop hearing how hard the Jungle is to play in?

Since '20-21 season, Aub is 51-9 and Ala is 52-6.
