I’ve been catching up with reading the posts in several threads and I’m reminded of what I often have to tell myself (and sometimes people on the work floor): to stop complaining.
There’s a difference between criticizing for the sake of criticism on the one hand, and constructive criticism in order to identify issues and make improvements on the other. The first version often leads to complaining or worse. While it can be fun for a while, e.g. when you’re among friends or in a small group of like-minded people, it can become annoying and tiresome after a while (or sometimes quickly), especially when you’ve heard it all before and the complaining doesn’t lead to anything positive or relevant. Constructive criticism I’m fine with, although it is not always fun to be on the receiving end of it. It’s much more interesting, however, because you’re actually trying to identify ways to make improvements and find solutions. Challenging but fun.
In some of the threads it has just been criticism for the sake of complaining, finding the negative in everything, the glass is always empty, etc.
Of course, it’s easy and understandable to feel down as an Alabama fan right now: no more Coach Saban, no more reassurances that the GOAT will somehow find ways to fix whatever problems lie ahead, big name players hitting the portal, big name recruits decommitting, being out-nilled by Texas et al, Uga having Smart, etc.
We KINDA knew that Saban at 72 wouldn’t be around forever, but we weren’t ready or prepared for his retirement. And it only makes sense that we’ve grown accustomed to Saban’s standard of success: to Bama being a winner in every way (on the field, in recruiting, even in the portal). Consequently, the fall-out of HCNS’s retirement is just terribly deflating. We understand that Saban’s retirement changes everything, from roster turn-over (exacerbated by NIL and the portal), to recruiting taking a hit, to Alabama no longer being the place both players and coaches flock to because of Saban. The situation sucks. But it should not be a downer to go through the threads on this board.

Now,
- Should Greg Byrne, like Mal Moore before him, have waited 30+ days with hiring a new coach in order to find the next Nick Saban? Probably not, because HCNS’s the GOAT for a reason and there is no next Saban around. Kirby? He’s not coming. Sark? Safer to stay at Texas. Pete Carroll? He’s not returning to college football at 72. Kiffin? Too much uncertainty (among other things).
- Should Saban have waited with retiring until after the second signing period? Probably not, because then hiring a replacement would have been even more difficult. DeBoer could by then have signed his extension, making his buy-out unaffordable.
- Should DeBoer have waited with hiring his staff until the Harbaugh/NFL situation plays out and then convince Minter and Partridge to move to Alabama as DC and LB coach, respectively? Fair question, but I don’t think as a manager/leader you can do that: it comes with way too many uncertainties.
- Should we be concerned about leading players hitting the portal? Yes, it is concerning. But it should not surprise us and we shouldn’t blame them. If the fans are (deeply) worried about the state of the Crimson Tide moving forward, why shouldn’t players and recruits be? It’s their future and livelihood that are on the line. Also, they are incredibly young and inexperienced, not to mention heavily influenced by negative recruiting. And what would we do if people are willing to throw hundreds of thousands of dollars at us? Would we be loyal?
[When I posted this I was not yet aware that Partridge had been fired by UM as part of the sign-stealing business, sorry]

Are there reasons to suggest the glass is half full? Apart from the fact that it is always better to look at life that way, there’s still plenty to be happy about.
(1) Our AD really did his job. He hired the best available option in a matter of days and we’re not talking about a Rich Rodriguez type of hire.
(2) DeBoer is an experienced HC and a proven winner. He can do more with less, which is good, cause for the moment he may have to work with less than what we were accustomed to under Saban.
(3) On offense DeBoer has brought with him most of his staff, making our offensive coaching staff better by a mile than it’s been since Sark left (especially OC and OL-coach, probably WR’s too).
(4) The defensive staff moves have not been ‘optic’ home runs (a Musschamps, Schuman, Pruitt or Jim Leonhard as DC for instance). But he’s kept Freddie Roach and I’m hopeful about the DC and DB hires. Should be young, aggressive and hungry guys and good recruiters.
(5) DeBoer brought with him his ‘GM’ (Courtney Morgan) who has a proven track record in terms of building a talented roster. So it may look rather bleak now, but there’s reason to believe that will be turned around sooner rather than later.
(6) While other teams are feasting on our roster, we may be able to pluck at least Washington for its best players and restock at WR, OL and CB. Maybe we won’t reload, but we won’t have to play walk-ons either.
Most of all, we shouldn’t (to paraphrase Saban) fall in the trap of believing all the doom and gloom stories posted about Alabama’s impending downfall. If DeBoer can consistently beat elite programs and be elite at Washington, there’s no reasons to believe he can’t achieve the same (and more) at the University of Alabama.

Finally (sorry), Alabama’s biggest challenge moving forward is IMO how to address the NIL developments. How can one deal with competing colleges like TAMU that can pony up 75 million to get rid of a head coach (and still hand out plenty of NIL-money to players in the portal)? If there is one area where I hope Saban can be a big factor, it is in mobilizing our booster-core in order to stay (at least somewhat) competitive regarding what we can offer recruits in terms of NIL money.

I dont think he is dragging. No one has offered him a job and the only places I think he would consider is at the moment are Atlanta and San Diego, which he already interviewed with and Atlanta is probably going with Belichick. He isn't going to Carolina or Seattle most likely. Vegas probably going to hire Pierce. That just leaves Washington and Tennessee and I haven't heard of any interest as of yet.

keep Tony Mitchell locked in and develop him as the next strong safety type.
Tony can be a thumper. He needs a little more speed. I suspect he will be good at covering tall TE's...we all know he likes to get high.

As an Atlanta fan, I sincerely hope they don't go with Belichick.
I really dislike Harbaugh, but he is probably the one who could win a championship here. We don't have a QB and with the development we saw with Jones and Zappe, I don't think we will be able to draft a long term QB, which means we will have to trade some of our young stars for a starter, or go with soneone like Kirk Cousins or Russell Wilson.
I think Harbaugh could take a young QB, or possibly even Jones and develop him quickly. I could even see him drafting the Michigan QB and being able to make a playoff run. Atlanta has a pretty good defense and a pretty good offense, just no one to pilot it. I think they probably have the best situation to step into if the QB spot is solved quickly.

Arthur Blank knows Belichick, he has a second interview this weekend, and well this is a guess, but Blank would hate Harbaugh's personality. Harbaugh would likely take San Diego over Atlanta. You are getting Belichick most likely. Your only saving grace is they interviewed a bunch of people so maybe they like someone else.

So if Harbaugh goes to the Chargers, Kelly goes to UM.. we have 30 days to poach their rosters with about 10 roster spots available. Plus whoever LSU hires.. then we also have after spring practice

That is if/when we have others transfer in the next few days which I expect

I doubt Kelly leaves. They’ll just promote from within
