The clunkiness with this team is more related to the fact that Jalen just doesn't see the short middle of the field.
100% Agree. Very frustrating because this offense (and team) has a lot of potential.

That means if the other stuff isn't there then we aren't going to get 3-4 yards and stay in 2nd and 6 or 3rd and 3.
It also means when we face a competent DC "the other stuff" is far less likely to "be there." .
quote:
you just have to kind of accept that the tradeoff for big plays with his arm and legs is you are going to have some drives where he just doesn't see anything and it flips over quick.
We saw this movie with Hurts and last season with Milroe. He's good enough to take us a looooong way purely off talent, but we aren't bringing home a title unless he figures out how to move the chains with more consistency.
I've been catching hell on this board pointing this out, but it's really plain to see to anyone willing to be objective.
Move the chains, protect the football, keep the defense off the field. Same formula every Champion has used seemingly forever.
Four three-and-outs followed by a three play TD is not a formula for winning a title
My biggest question moving forward is DeBoers philosophy on seniority. Was there ever a chance anyone other than Milroe was going to start this season ? Did Simpson really get beat out by a guy that can only see half the field ?

Has it occurred to you that maybe the coaching staff feels Jalen is the best quarterback right now? It’s unfair to both Jalen and Ty to continue bill him as a much better quarterback than Jalen. I root for them both but there’s no evidence that Ty should be starting over Jalen. Jalen is dominating this season so far and so many of you can’t enjoy it because you’re thinking about a fantasy. Are there limitations to his game? Yes. But you haven’t seen Ty start for a full season and seem his weaknesses and strengths. Michigan won a championship with Jj McCarthy at quarterback and he’s nowhere near as good as Jalen.

Even when healthy, we are playing a lot of different o line combos. Van dermark played center in the first quarter. We frequently substituted o linemen all game
And I’m wondering when Law has his breakout game

I like the offense. All of the deep shots help keep defenses honest. It backs them up. They know we can hit a big TD pass at any moment.
With the defense back in coverage, that gives more room for the run game.
I COMPLETELY disagree that we need to stop running Milroe. Milroe is our best running threat, and if he gets hurt, we just throw in Ty Simpson and keep rolling. We don't need to be calling plays based on fear of injury. Milroe is not injury-prone. We need to go balls to the wall and let him run wild - especially against our toughest opponents like Georgia.
Nobody has an answer for Jalen's legs.

I think the biggest improvement for Milroe has been DeBoer. Last yr (I may be wrong) I don’t think Milroe ran much if any RPO and if so not like he is now.
I don’t know enough about X’s & O’s and which schemes fit either QB better, but DeBoer does and regardless of Milroes limitations DeBoer has him playing better and with more confidence and being relaxed then last yr.
DeBoer is like a John Wick of coaches, whatever he has in his arsenal his going to try and wreck shite. When the 9’s go dry he’s going to have a Benelli M4 close by when that’s empty he’s pulling out a Colt M4 to do damage and when everything been depleted he’s pulling out a Santo blade and No.2 pencil in the other hand.
I think with each game DeBoer is getting more comfortable seeing what each player is capable of in live action now. And I bet Kirby maybe a little unsure what DeBoer has schemed for this game. It’s the ultimate test for both coaches but for entirely different reasons

FEI Offense: 9th (UGA: 3rd)
FEI PPD: 18th (UGA: 65th)
FEI YPP: 10th (UGA: 34th)
Given the OL injury situation for the first two games I'm simply not going to bemoan the state of our offense when we're a top 10 efficiency unit through three games and are ranked ahead of teams like Tennessee.
1) We were a mess without our tackles and the first two games we played without them aren't really reflective of what we should expect moving forward.
2) There is a real chance we are running a better version of the Jalen Hurts offense right now where against bad teams we’d torch them using speed and athleticism, but completely stall against elite defensive fronts. We just wont know until we see whether it can function when the athletes we're playing are equal to what we put on the field.
3) The results have been a Rorschach test where people who want to see problems see them and people who see the positives focus on them with facts to support both arguments. Between Milroe and the OL its impossible to isolate variables and I also have doubts as to whether the offensive scheme we'll run against UGA is what we've seen YTD. If it is we're in trouble because I haven't been very impressed so far.
But I'd rather have our healthy offense than the offense I saw UGA put on the field against UK so there's real reason for optimism IMO.

Agree. After seeing us last Saturday I feel very comfortable completely discounting the line I saw again at USF. They just aren't comparing apples to apples. In terms of whether what we're doing will work against really good defenses, I truly don't know. I think it will work to an extent - the schemes are too good and we have too many explosive athletes. The question is if it's enough and if we can supplement it with more solid short yardage. I do think it's better now with the whole OL and our backs/Milroe.
Either way, we're about to find out.

My point exactly.

Wait, You think McCarthy is "nowhere near as good" as Milroe ? At playing QB ?
Jalen was labeled as "raw" out of H.S. We have come to understand why he was labeled raw. It would be beating a dead horse to list it all.
Meanwhile Ty was a five star QB. He is clearly more fundamentally sound. Ironically I'd also say Ty has more wiggle and a better feel for the read option and when to run the ball.
It's hard to understand so it creates a lot of conjecture.
Hurts Vs Tua all over again.
All I know is we will play teams this year that will not allow us to simply throw the ball over their heads.

Me too. He didn’t seem to be on the field a lot last weekend

He was on the field. Sheridan praised him today for blocking. People need to understand that we haven’t shown the entire play book. Prentice didn’t have a reception on Saturday. Henderson only had one catch but he looked good:

So because Ty was a five star in high school means he’s better than a guy who was in consideration for the heisman trophy? I understand you’re an anti Milroe guy but you literally can’t bench a guy who’s playing as well as Jalen is right now. You’ve never seen Ty go into a hostile environment and play. You’ve never seen Ty bounce back from a bad interception. You’ve never seen Ty throw a deep ball at Alabama. All of your points are speculation. You anti milroe guys are destroying our season because we can’t talk non biased football. We know who our quarterback is at this point and it’s nothing any of us can do about it.

Its no secret who Milroe is. Teams are not allowing us to do that. Its pick your poison. They are keeping defenders up to stop our run, including QB run. And the OLine has done a pretty good job getting him some time to wait on the WRs.
For opposing defenses, if you dont get early pressure on him, you are kinda fricked. I think the best defense would be to bring heavy rush from all over and make him guess where its coming from.

Which is what Michigan did. And it worked.

I strongly suspect you’re correct and that the offensive scheme the first two games in particular was to a degree an attempt by the the coaches to feel out Milroe the way Rees had to until halftime of the TN game last year.

Anybody that says Milroe isn't good enough to win a title is stupid. They just are. Jalen led Bama to a win against UGA in Atlanta last year. If he can do that he can win a national title.

People seem to forget that Simpson is a good runner too. Not quite as fast as Milroe but IMO is shiftier than Milroe and can make guys miss.

Do you think Bama would have beaten Michigan if Parker Brailsford and Ryan Williams were on the 2023 team? I do.
