Strong's D shouldn't necessarily be rated against his time as a HC because the DC hire and lots of other things play into it.

That said, Strong has been a DC since 2009.

The game has changed quite a bit since then. I think he is a great coach and his time as an analyst has likely been invaluable to his own growth as well as contributing to the team.

Saban using him as the conduit to the team when observing practices during his CV19 spell may be telling toward the trust and respect he has for Strong.

If promoted to DC, I think he'd do extremely well. Half the fight is meshing with Saban and he seems to do that.

Has anyone considered that Dabo plays the “poor lil ol clemmy” because its freaking Clemson. Who’s to say he wouldn’t play it completely different at a historic juggernaut like Bama? I’m in the camp that you better not pass on the best coach out there.

Ehhh. He's been blow. out in the playoff's 3 times.. Two years straight.

Like I said, I like having Strong around, and he might be fine as a DC here. I just don't get why we act like we have a hall of fame DC sitting on the bench .

He was good at Florida, but he wasn't some sort of savant.

2003 - 6th SEC (5.1)
2004 - 5th SEC (4.8)
2005 - 5th SEC (4.8)
2006 - 3rd SEC (4.3)
2007 - 8th SEC (5.2)
2008 - 3rd SEC (4.5)
2009 - 2nd SEC (4.2)

Again, pretty good, but nothing jumps off the page like HOLY SHITE GOTTA GET THIS GUY IN THERE. I mean I always remember him as a solid coordinator who generally had really good players who weren't out of position much.

He's fine, I just don't get the constant HURRY GET CHARLIE STRONG IN THERE stuff.

So I feel like I need to wipe the icky off since I saw Todd post this on the Rant, but I've seen his name mentioned elsewhere by people too.......

Thoughts on Kendall Briles? He's obviously from the Baylor school of offense (or is the Baylor school, considering his lineage), but he also meshed his Baylor concepts with Kiffin stuff at FAU and seemingly has done that at FSU and Arkansas. The Baylor scandal stuff is also obviously.......there.

I'd need to read more about his scheme and everything, and I just don't know my thoughts on all the Baylor stuff and his involvement. Off the top of my head, they are not very positive.

Strong might end up being a good choice but I would be hesitant with someone who hasn’t been a DC in so long. College Football was a completely different game in 2009. Kind of the same thing LSU ran into with Pelini. Sometimes the game just kind of passes these guys by. He might end up being fine but I would be hesitant.

Great playcaller. Garbage human being. Art took the fall to save his career, but he was deeply involved in everything going on. I would not feel great about it.

Yea - I'd much rather hire a young up and comer with large G5 experience (not UTSA, cough cough) than a retread who hasn't been in the trenches of coordinating a defense since before the entire CFB world went to the spread/RPO game.

There's a good chuckle in the tigerbaitlawyer(an "insider") thread on the CC board about Napier being offer 2.5 million to be OC and HCIW with the promise Saban is done after 2021

So Sark left for a multi-year rebuild even though we are willing to give the job to Billy Napier after next season? They don't really believe that do they? Who am I kidding, of course they do.

Sure, he started out 0-4 this year, but he had won his division 4 times in the previous 5 years.

As a head coach.

That's not the same as being a dedicated DC. Were his defenses better or worse when he was DC?

They're detailed out above - they were consistently somewhere in the #3-6 range in the SEC at Florida. Solid, but not incredible. And not really all that much better than when he was a HC considering where he was.

Yep. I saw that after I posted. Guess I should learn to read all the way to the end first.
