Coach Saban has a history of leaving the more talented freshman player on the bench in favor of the more experienced player. In 2017 alone he left our best quarterback of all time on the bench, he played Womack at RT over Wills and Leatherwood could easily started at a guard spot.

Regardless, I think Mac is good enough to run a high octane offense so we are in good hands. IF Young is a talent akin to Tua then of course he will eventually rise to the top but thinking he wins it outright out of fall camp is probably a little naive. I also think Lia will have something to say about who wins the job.

true. however, if BY is as good as advertised and catches on fast. do you really think they'll force him to sit his first year like they did tua, until they have no other choice. i'm not sure they'll make that same mistake twice. "IF" BY, if good enough to start halfway thru the season, i think he will.

To be fair, I seriously doubt it was Brian Daboll's call on Tua. Every time he got in the game and played meaningful minutes, which was often, he had a gameplan for Tua that exceeded what he was asking of Jalen through the air.

In the Tennessee game when Tua threw the pick-six, Gary Danielson, guaranteed the audience that would be the last we saw of Daboll dialing up those passes. Next Alabama series, Tua was airmailing and we proceeded to continue the blowout. Tua was more than ready for his closeup in the second half of the NC.

Hootie Jones playing over Thompson.

Robert Foster and Cam Sims playing over Ruggs/Jeudy/Smith.

D. Harris and Scarbrough playing over N Harris.

Saban did the 17 team a disservice by not playing the best players.

Luckily, he came to his senses in the 2nd half of the NCG. He put all those freshman in and Bama dominated Georgia.

I’m curious as to why OP thinks Bryce will be the starter. Bryce will not be starting for Bama when we kick off vs USC

I guess I’m just using common sense here...

You’ve got 2 choices...

Roll with the guy (Mac Jones) who has a Greg McElroy/Kyle Trask/Shea Patterson type ceiling

or

Roll with the guy (Bryce Young) who has a Tua Tagovailoa/Joe Burrow/Trevor Lawrence type ceiling

You only get the good ones for 3 seasons in college football. That’s 40-45 games. Why let them rot on the bench for 13 or more of them? Get them out there & let them start developing.

By the time the Iron Bowl rolls around, Bryce Young would be head & shoulders above what Mac Jones could even dream of being if Bryce is given the first 11 starts.

It was a complete travesty that Tua rotted on the bench & played trash time until the Georgia game during his 1st season. Imagine Tua’s numbers at Bama with 14 more starts?

Hurts ceiling wasn’t close to Tua’s, and Mac Jones’s ceiling isn’t close to Bryce Young’s. Let’s not waste the young stud for a year, or even worse than that, watch him transfer out.

I always thought Damien Harris starting over Josh Jacobs was a boneheaded decision too.

Common sense says to wait until the guy shows up to his first practice before handing him the keys to Ferrari. You have no clue how well or how long it will take him to adjust to the speed of football at this level.

I think we are all enamored with his potential and would be thrilled for him to runaway with job and make us forget about Tua but damn guy, he hasn't even suited up for his first practice.

On the reverse side, common sense also says don’t hand the keys to Mac yet until you give the kid a chance.

No shite? Of course he will get a chance as will Lia and Paul. Competition is a good thing.

I stopped right here because assuming this is the dumbest shite ever.

Here's the category I put you in:

If you think playing highschool football in California is alot like playing football in the SEC, then there isn't much common sense being used here.

Mac was a 4 star QB who now has multiple years practicing against a pretty good SEC defense. He also now has a few starts under his belt, and most of them were against better defenses. Auburn had the #4 defense this past year.

It's downright foolish to even remotely assume he isn't WAY in the lead for the starting position next year.

Last 5 star QB out of California that was supposedly so great looking and people were saying he should have been starting over a similar QB was Blake Barnett. Who ends up losing the job to a true freshman 4 star QB.

The media hypes this shite up for ratings. They put out the same exact shite year after year. Maybe he's the greatest thing ever, maybe he's the Ben Davis of QBs.

But there is not a bit of common sense that says he is the starter next year.

Sucks getting trolled on your own damn team forum.

No, regardless of how many times y'all post it, it's just not true.

You are right. He just missed out on being a 4 star.

He was ranked #399 with a rating of 0.8815(18th best QB). The lowest 4 star was #339 with a rating of 0.8901(23rd best DE)

So I'll try to correct the 4 star thing in the future, and just mention he was the 18th best QB that year.

I don't care how many stars Mac had in high school. He has shown that he can get the job done. I would be thrilled if Young comes in and wins the job right out the gate but he is gonna have some competition.

Probably a lot better competition then high school football in Hawaii.

Talent is talent, doesn't matter where a kid plays high school ball.

Tua had it and so does Young. We will see if Saban has learned from his mistake in 17 by not starting the better more talented QB.

Yes it was, Saban damn near cost his team a national title by not playing the better QB. Saban did cost his team a SEC Title and a 15-0 record by not playing the better QB.

All reports said Tua made a lot of strides while playing with the 1st team offense during playoff practice because Jalen was sick.

That's legit news sources, not "insider" bullshite.

Furthermore, Tua didn't actually do better against better defenses when he was the starter. He did well in that Georgia game, except for the terrible interception. But in other games against good defenses he had his fair share of problems. How quickly we forget it was Jalen who then showed up in the SECCG the next year, saving a playoff run. In which Tua failed to score in the entire 2nd half, threw a pick six and overall failed to get the offense going.

Against LSU this year he fumbles without being touched inside LSU's 10 and then he throws an interception right before the half setting up LSU taking a 20 pt lead instead of just a 13 pt lead into the half. 15 seconds left in the half.

I'll probably get downvoted for saying all this about Tua, but I don't care. It's the truth. Tua played for more than 1 half of a game, and Jalen did way better than people want to give him credit for.

What if we ran the ball more vs. Clemson with some designed runs with Jalen and use the law firm of running backs?

Brian Robinson should have been used more

You mean it was terrible to play two experienced guys who are currently in the NFL?

Hell, fire Saban now. He clearly has no idea what he's doing.
