Its ok. A lot of idiots who don't know basketball think Oats' philosophy is just jack up 3's. He's preached defense and rebounding as keys to winning since day 1 while keying on high reward shots, 3 pointers, and high percentage shots, layups, over being inefficient with a bunch of mid-range looks. Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, we can all tell Oats has really been pushing defense and rebounding! Great post man, I’ll try to learn more about basketball like you! Sorry to waste your time.

Nate needs to come out against State and start the guys who play defense. And send a message.

Allen
Bethea
Mallette
Jemison
Sherrell

That should be our starting 5. Philon and Biz gotta earn their way back. Especially Philon…there was a stretch in th game where he got beat over and over and over again with the same action

He isn’t going to play Bethea so we can give up on that. There’s been multiple games where he’s said “I’ve gotta try different guys and different line ups” but rolls out some variation the same 8.

For my own sake and because I’m an Oats guy through and through I’ve accepted that it’s not going to happen and I’m at the point now where I wish we’d redshirt him so we do right by him and save a year of eligibility.

It’s the most confused I’ve been by a personnel decision during his tenure.

Last night was just a terrible loss. No way to spin it. Texas is not very good. NET in the 70’s. 0-2 in the conference including a home loss to Miss. St. Only semi decent team they had beat prior to last night was N.C. St. I understand it will occasionally happen on the road. But no way you should lose that game at home.

I get tired of Oats only blaming effort and never schematics. Either you have a culture problem for why guys won’t play consistently hard for you or you aren’t a great defensive mind and you screwed up bringing in a defensive guy who wasn’t elite and doesn’t understand college offenses. I’d lean to it being the latter. Hopefully he’s smart enough to fix it this offseason.

Defense is mostly because of schematics.

And we never switch it up or try to. In Nate’s 7 years here I can only remember trying something new defensively, once. That was @Missouri in 22 he came out in zone to start the game and we were down 9-0 after 3 possessions. I think that’s scared him out of trying different stuff.

I think Oats needs to get a College Basketball defensive Mind. Not NBA, NBA runs a lot of drop and that shite sucks.

We inexplicably have 1 or 2 of these a year where it looks like the wheels have come off and we’re in a ditch.

This one feels a bit different in that we have legit roster issues compared to who we want to play. Oats touched on it and came very close to saying the truth, which is we have effort/defense guys who absolutely cannot score. And we have scorers who can’t rebound well or play defense. Id like if we just fully leaned into our strengths but we’re far enough into the season now that I have my doubts.

Going to enjoy the rest of the year without expectations.

I remember the Wimp Sanderson teams seemed to be built around good defense and strong rebounding. Worked out well for him most games.

Bristow really had my hopes up after the Illinois game and I thought he followed that up with a respectable 7 point, 11 rebound performance against Gonzaga in only 19 minutes of play. But then the wheels kind of fell off. He looks completely unsure of what he is supposed to do on offense and part of that is because he doesn't want to pop out and shoot 3's because it isn't his game. His defense has been bad on small guards and worse when we put him on the 5. We are letting him and Bethea kind of rot on the bench and I get that there are reasons, but we seem like a team that needs length and athleticism desperately right now on defense and rebounding. I know Nate wants system players in the most, but Scoring 90 points doesn't solve any problems if you give up 92 in every loss.

I loved Alabama basketball under Wimp but this season of, so far, just being in the Top 20 with a seeming ceiling of the Sweet 16 that we're all disappointed in was often a highpoint.

We can’t rebound and get loose balls.
If we took Sherrill out the big red head just backed up to the basket and banked it in and or got fouled. He just worked the skinny boys over. Could not believe Oats had the only big that could even compete with that mauler on the bench in critical last 90 seconds.
Oats need to recruit the guys that play the 5 position based on rebounding and defensive ability. Not whether the can shoot an occasional 3 pt shot. We cannot be a good defensive team if Oats continues to recruit big that can’t rebound. If they averaged 5 or 6 rebounds at their last school— that ain’t going to get it. It has been a total fail at that position. Kind of like running back on the football team.

Another thing, when the other team drives to the basket and our defensive player hits down at the offensive player, that is an automatic foul call. We do that over and over and over. That is just poor coaching. If you swat down towards the other player it’s going to get called a foul. Get your hands up, get your body your chest up against the other player but don’t jump up and hammer down towards the shooter. They call the foul almost 100 percent of the time.

I honestly can't believe we lost this game. Didn't watch because I was with family, just saw the score. Honestly didn't cross my mind that we might lose this one.
It appears the players approached the game with this exact same mindset.

apparently so. I would hope they don't take the mindset of fans but I guess they're human too.
