Terrell Owens and Philip Rivers recruitment question

How was it that Alabama and Auburn missed so badly on these guys coming out of high school? TO apparently dreamed of playing for Alabama since he was little and yet no team in the SEC ever offered him a scholarship (Alabama included).
Rivers was rated as the #1 QB coming out of high school in the state of Alabama. Alabama and Auburn both offered him but neither coaching staff ever thought he had what it took to be a starter (DuBose and Tubby FTW!). So he ended up going to NC State instead and the rest is history.
Bottom line...what the hell happened? How did we whiff on two of the better players to ever play their position in football?

Bama at the time was recruiting Rivers as a S, pretty sure the same can be said about AU.
He was just not that impressive at Qb when he played for Athens.
Obviously my eval doesn't mean shite, because Amato told Phillip he would start from day 1 for NCst, so his family relocated there and the rest is history.
He did have the benefit of having Norm Chow for a year or 2 there, and I think that helped in his development.
Can't comment on TO other than the fact that I went to elementary school with him. So there's that

Owens played for UT-Chattanooga so obviously he wasn’t very highly rated at all coming out of HS.

Owens experienced a grow spurt in college. Rivers throwing motion turned a lot folks off. Another miss was Demarcus Ware, who also experienced a growth spurt at Troy.

I don't know if this is the case with those guys, but being spurned by your dream school could inspire you to work hard and reach your full potential

I have no idea... but one of my buddy's twin brother hiked the ball to rivers at nc state, had to line vs mario williams in practice if i remember correctly he said rivers was married by so or jr year, so no idea how that factored in, or if it did.

Rivers Alabama was recruiting as a TE I think. Auburn was recruiting him as a safety.
Side note - A good friend of mine played HS football against him and says that Rivers hit him harder than he has ever been hit before.

Yes, yes he did. And Bo did play what would probably be considered OLB in high school. We called it a 5-2 defense but the DEs were upright in a two point stance and would probably be called OLBs and the defense a 3-4 today. Bo didn’t like playing defense so that went over like a turd in a punch bowl when CPB suggested that.
Rivers didn’t really get much interest as a QB prospect because of his strange throwing motion. Everyone said he was a project, that he would have to be taught proper QB mechanics. How’d that work out? Lol!!

This along with what a couple others said about the throwing motion is what hurt Rivers recruitment.
There will always be one that slips through the cracks.
Chow is an unbelievable QB coach. There was rumor when Saban first got to Bama that he was talking with Chow. May have been just that, rumors. Would have been amazing to see.

I went to high school with TO (a year ahead of him).
He ran track at BRHS, and I don't think he played football till his senior year.
I think Coach Savarese pulled a some strings to get TO into UTC, because he was so green at WR. TO was fast and skinny but very athletic, and UTC took a chance on him. The rest is history.
There was a coupe of guys that made the NFL from Coosa Central also (Adalious Thomas, and Justin Tuck), that BAMA, nor tBarn were able to get.
Both were petty damn good at basketball also.
A lot of guys slip through the cracks and don't get noticed, or haven't developed yet (late bloomers).

I went to Southern Miss with Adalius Thomas. He had a pretty decent NFL career.

If I'm not mistaken, both of those guys made it to the Superbowl the same year (different teams).

Man, that's bringing back some memories! We played 5-2 in junior high. I was in a 4-3 by high school.

I don't think the talent level in the state of Alabama is given the respect it deserves. It just seems a lot of it blooms later. Plenty of examples of kids developing into NFL prospects elsewhere.

Agree.
I haven’t broken down the numbers, but it seems per capita wise the talent coming out of Alabama is on par with Texas, Georgia, and Florida.

Justin Tuck went to Notre Dame. I wouldn't call that a "miss" by either AU or UA. Sometimes kids have their minds made up to go out of state.

If Homer Smith had been around campus when Rivers came out of HS, things might have been different.
He might have set all the Alabama passing records.
He made a wise choice going to NCSt at the time.

It was either #1 or #2 per capita the last time I looked.
