I can’t read the article because it’s behind a paywall. But we can only hope that UT gets blasted like Bama did twenty years ago. Hopefully the NCAA goes after other programs, too.

I get the feeling the NCAA is barking up a tree that they ought not if they want to maintain any semblance of control over college football. Florida State, Florida, Tennessee for NIL. Michigan for cheating in advance scouting.

They're going after big names and probably have plans to go after a few more in the near future. The NCAA is going to implicate enough significant schools that they may find that the money-makers divorce themselves from the NCAA in football and maybe men's basketball.

This may have the potential of turning the tables on 10rC . They are on probation. This is exactly what screwed us for 10+ years.
Infractions compounded by probation.
Can never forget how the Vols and the rest of the college football world ridiculed and taunted us. Especially the hillbillies.
Hope they have to forfeit wins and have their probation extended.

There are probably significantly more coaches and administrators who hate it and want clearer guidelines and more rules enforcement than ones who think the current situation is great and want to keep it as is. They may smack around a few programs who have gotten sloppy and out of control with the blatant pay for play, but I don't see that prompting some huge shift in the CFB world. The bigger question is the legality of placing any restrictions on NIL.

I hope that they get their 2022 season vacated. Selfishly, as an Alabama fan, that game in Knoxville still burns me up. That program can burn to the ground as far as I’m concerned.

An important part of the NCAA case, according to the NY Times article, is that the Tennessee NIL group (the Volunteer Club) used a private jet to fly Nico Iamaleava to Knoxville while he was being recruited.

The article states the Volunteer Club is closely linked to a marketing agency called Spyre Sports Group. The two entities share the same top officers and the same address in Knoxville. Which is gonna make it hard for Tennessee to prove there's no overlap between their recruiting efforts and their use of NIL funds.

You’re right but I think the legality of limiting NIL is going to be damning at making punishment stick. I think the only “bringing it under control” is turning the players into employees but that is going to suck in so many other ways.

I knew this had to do with Nico whatever his last name is. They gave him $8 million.

It's Nico Iamaleavin' if things start looking bad enough.

Nico should be ineligible by the letter of the law and not start for Tennessee this season. It certainly puts them in a precarious spot when it comes to potential vacating future wins.

Seriously, this is the problem for Tennessee. They are currently on probation for the violations that occurred under Jeremy Pruitt. The repeat violator deal could compound things.

The problem is that catching them as redhanded as they've ever caught anyone engaging in pay for play didn't even result in a bowl ban, just forced them to part with a coach they were likely to fire anyway. 20 years ago, they would have been crushed if they were caught paying twice in less than four years. Today, might be a slap on the wrist.

They also needed to be investigated for bribing officials. That 2022 Bama game was criminal, then against Georgia that same year Tennessee was tackled like five yards deep in the endzone and they said it wasn't a safety.

No doubt that those officials were bribed. Same as when they officiated the Auburn game this past year. Opposing teams’ boosters obviously are doing some shady stuff to take us down. That same crew officiated the game at Texas A&M in 2021.

I personally think Alabama should file a request never to have that crew again. And it's not just that they bungle calls that hurt Bama, they've been reprimanded on several occasions in games not involving Bama at all.

The Times article notes that the NCAA doesn't like to use postseason bans as a punishment any more.

Can’t convince me that a school willing to spend like that on a HS QB while cheating in hundreds of violations didn’t have boosters willing to bribe officials.

If I’m a booster putting up $3M for a QB why would I not spend $100k on an official(s) to break a streak against my rival?

How would anyone ever know? The officials aren’t audited or held accountable for “bad” calls.

The sport is corrupt to the marrow right now. Players are bought, gamble, likely point shave, are tampered with, secured with hookers and shopping new deals the moment they sign their current deal.

It’s a disgusting sport and I’ve been staring at my ticket renewal form asking myself why I would pay thousands to watch it other than tradition at this point.
