Averett sat for a while before becoming a major contributor. So did Cyrus Jones. He bounced around from WR to CB until finally sticking at CB. Reuben didn't play much until he finally learned how to tackle without risking paralysis. I think if Ben Davis ever contributes much it'll be more like Jerrell Harris though. I don't see him ever becoming a star and getting drafted or anything like those other guys.

The most damning evidence against the idea of Ben Davis getting first team (or even 2nd team) PT is that he's never contributed on special teams. Sure, I suppose the "light could come one" for him in some capacity, but it sounds like it would need to be a series of lights.

For perspective, underweight freshman Kaho played in every game last year on special teams, yet Ben Davis has played in 3 games in his entire career, has never played a down on special teams, and has never played a snap in the SEC.

I'm not explicitly counting Davis out, but him getting PT seems to be a very, very long shot based on the preponderance of evidence.

At this point I am unsure why you would continue to expect Ben Davis to contribute at Alabama.

I don't want to seem like I'm bashing the kid, but a younger Saban would have moved on from a misevaluation or put them on a legacy scholarship (if applicable).

As it stands, he's taking someone else's spot.

JMO but I believe Ben will stick and graduate from the U of A and then have two years to play at West Alabama or North Alabama.

I track the Roster numbers in the FB Recruiting & Roster Megathread (that link is on the top line of its 1st post). Assuming Tyrique McDonald and Scott Meyer don't get scholarships for fall (they're in the transfer portal) we'll have 85 on scholarship when the rest of the 2019 signees enroll this summer. So, unless we add a grad transfer TE or something, we won't need to free up another spot under the 85 limit. If it turns out that we do and Davis still isn't progressing, a medical hardship scholly might be an option.

I have been tracking the numbers for several years (why, I really don't know, I was a CPA for many years... guess the numbers game never really leaves you)...
But I have the same numbers as you. I have already moved McDonald into my unofficial Transfered Out grouping and Meyer to the Walk-On group giving my schedule a perfect 85. (had BD1 highlighted as Grad and Transfer out candidate...which would save Meyer's Scholly??, but who knows about Gentle Ben)

Ben Davis enrolled in June, 2016. So if he took enough summer classes in 2016, '17 and '18, he may be able to graduate upon completion of the spring or summer term of 2019.

Regarding Ben Davis:

So, I guess there have been more amazing turn arounds... not sure who they were; but, I am sure there are dozens on this board that will bring example after example to the forefront.

I would love to hear such examples. And I'm not trying to funny or cynical. From what I have read here it just appears that anyone who believes that Davis can still become an NFL-draft worthy contributor probably should be a candidate for the Most Optimistic Person of the Year award.
Don't get me wrong, I love a feel good story and I sure hope that's what's in store for Ben Davis at Bama this year.

Projecting Alabama's starting lineup after first spring practice From BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter
quote:

...In a couple of viewing periods of one practice, we started to see the order of position groups -- though things can change between now and August. The rest of the Tide’s 2019 signing class hasn’t arrived on campus yet and there were a few players missing from practice No. 1. But for the most part, the brief window for viewing matched up with our offseason projected depth chart.
quote:

With that in mind, we break down what Alabama’s starting lineups on offense and defense would be if the Crimson Tide played a game this evening, based on the first spring practice, what took place on the field and at practice last season and just some pure guesses on our part. ... here is Alabama’s projected starting lineup after only one spring practice.
quote:

OFFENSE:
QB -- Tua Tagovailoa
RB -- Najee Harris
WR-X -- DeVonta Smith
WR-Z -- Henry Ruggs III
WR-H -- Jerry Jeudy
TE -- Miller Forristall
TE-H -- Major Tennison (remembering Kendrick James is subject to 4 game suspension)
LT -- Alex Leatherwood
LG -- Emil Ekiyor (again Deonta Brown is suspended for 1st 4 games)
C -- Chris Owens
RG -- Matt Womack
RT -- Jedrick Wills
quote:

DEFENSE:
DE -- Raekwon Davis
NG -- Phidarian Mathis
DE -- LaBryan Ray
SAM -- Terrell Lewis
MIKE -- Dylan Moses
WILL -- Joshua McMillon
JACK -- Anfernee Jennings
B -- Trevon Diggs
CB -- Patrick Surtain II
FS -- Jared Mayden
SS -- Xavier McKinney
STAR -- Shyheim Carter

*** Note: There are 24 players listed because Alabama announces its offensive starters with three receivers and two tight ends and its defensive starters with a base front seven and nickel secondary.

Looks very promising. Raekwon Davis returning makes the DL look very solid. If Anoma can shake his ADHD and mental issues that would make things look even better.
Lotsa talent on both sides of the ball. Combine this with an experienced and hungry coaching staff and Saban having a chip on his shoulder... Could be a special year.

I said the same thing about Davis last spring and it wasn't received well. Maybe I gave up on him a year too early but this is the year right? I think someone has already said that a younger Nick Saban would have already processed the kid and I agree. He is the biggest bust to come through here since.....well, I don't know if anybody else even compares. Every other kid rated that high has at least played special teams in three years.

Not calling you out, but I seem to remember your words not being well received because they were much stronger and kinda hating on the kid. I could be wrong, though...

You may well be right. I Don't feel like digging through my post history but I haven't always posted with integrity concerning these players. I wish Davis the best and maybe he surprises us and earns a starting role on the kickoff team.

Looking over this roster if we can get some top level play out of the OL and secondary AND the injury bug doesn't wipe us out at any other position This team could go a long way, but we definitely do not have the depth to handle much in the way of injuries. There was a time when Saban's recruiting was so dominating that we were deeper but Georgia becoming a force in recruiting has made it much harder to stockpile depth. Of course no other team could have handled the injuries we had last year either so it's not like we are behind anybody. I could literally see a situation between four or five teams that the healthiest team could win the title just due to that.

Only real lack of depth is at ILB now. Plenty of depth on the DL with 6 incoming players. Just got to get them experience.

Speaking of ILBs, anyone know if Kaho is going to be back at practice today?

I sold all my stock in Ben Davis, Kenrick James, and Kaho, and Anoma. Just taking the loss.

TE is perhaps the weakest spot on the starting 22.

I dumped my Ben Davis stock a while back, but I'm still holding my James, Anoma and Kaho stock. Markhail Benton is one who needs to get serious right now about the starting ILB spot that's there for the taking. I'd also like to see Jarez Parks get cross-trained at ILB this spring. He's the right size and skill set for it and he may actually be a better fit there than he is at OLB.
