I played a HS football game there in ‘88. It was quite an experience. Let’s just say that the field was not up to MLB standards. The crown was ridiculous. You could only see the players on the other sidelines from the knees up. Our RB ran into the corner of the end zone (batting circle) and nearly disappeared! I also played a HS game in the infield at Fairpark. Nuts, bolts, screws and busted glass everywhere. The only good experience was getting to play at Legion Field. Bama was using it that season while expansion was going on at BD, I believe. Metro area football. Oh, the memories.

We live in a world where you can get shot shopping for groceries at Walmart because some idiot isn’t happy with his life and wants to take it out on the world. You can live or you can live scared. I would go to the game if it’s something you want to do.
Scared has nothing to do with it. It’s being smart enough to stay away from a bad situation. If you wanna go to the game that’s fine, but you better be aware the bad area you’re driving into.

I played at Legion Field twice, in the old Dental Clinic Classics that used to be held back in the 70’s thru mid 90’s. I played there in ‘87 and ‘88. That old turf reminded me of an asphalt parking lot painted green!!

So Brother in law is gonna be able to get off work and take them. Glad…I don’t have to go and is something I’m sure they will remember more fondly with their dad as opposed to their uncle

It's true that it can happen anywhere, but there are places where the probability of it happening is much higher than elsewhere.

Ive lived in Birmingham and Montgomery and lived near and worked in a lot of neighborhoods this board would make posts about being scared to go to I guess. Am I saying “hang out on the street corner or sit idle in your car for 3 hours”? No.
But being able to go to a baseball game if you’re not explicitly seeking trouble isn’t going to Beirut. It’s all about situational awareness. Life isn’t all mimosa brunches in mountain brook.

My nephews wanted me to take them over and try to find a ticket to the game tomorrow night but if I remember correctly the ballpark is in a pretty bad part of town, right? Not somewhere I wanna be after dark?
Its in the hood. Dont leave anything valuable in your car

The vast majority of violent crime happens to people who know the offender. Obviously, don't go walking around alone at night in Fairfield flaunting a rolex, and dont start shite with people, but the fear people have of poor areas is crazy. You'd think Birmingham is a fricking war zone by the way the scared people talk about it. I worked downtown for years, plenty of late nights walking to my car. I've spent so many nights out going to all the great restaurants and bars. Spent so much time getting hammered and walking around the Theatre district. Never had a problem. Don't know anyone who has.
How do people think that places like Cafe Dupont, Collins Bar, East West, Wine Loft ect stay open? These are nice places that maintain steady business. If there was any significant risk of being harmed, these businesses wouldn't survive. It's wild that people think it's dangerous. Can't imagine living life so damn afraid of everything that isn't a shitty little-boxes suburb with shitty cultureless stripmalls. What's the fricking point of living in a city if you aren't going to enjoy the amenities? It's so god damn weird and funny

On this note they did a segment on one of the news channels about a man who recently opened a restaurant and bar across the street from Rickwood.

These are all in one of the nicest if not the nicest area of the city.
You’re talking about things that are of no relevance to west Birmingham. I’ve been to a game at Legion Field. The area is safe enough for day events, but you don’t want to hang out there like you would the Theatre District or Five Points. It’s completely reasonable to be worried about the safety of that area especially if you’re bringing kids.
Your post is basically, “I hang out in Beverly Hills all the time. How could people be scared of Lincoln Heights or Compton?”

Five Points
Sadly this area is overrun with drug addicts. Walking to any of the restaurants in 5 Points from my office is like a scene from The Walking Dead. It’s a pity.

Theatre district is not Beverely Hills lol. It is different from West Bhm, don't get me wrong, but people are legitmately terrified of all downtown, including the Theatre district, which is what I was talking about.
Took my girl out to Zaza's before going to see a play last night. She told a coworker and their response was "Oh that's downtown please be safe, there's a lot of violence there".

Bad part of town is putting it mildly. Buckle up, partner, you're crossing over into Somalia-west.
This poster is correct. That is not an area of Birmingham to spend any time in after dark.
There is a difference between "not living your life" and "doing something stupid."

Well the game happened and we’ve heard no reports of fans being shot or robbed

That's good. I'm glad we were lucky this time. It definitely wasn't because the City gives a crap about protecting people.

always some white trash who live out in bumfrick chiming in these threads with their little delusions about what happens in the city limits. they have no clue.
anyone who would compare birmingham to east somalia is a racist and anyone who is surprised the night past without incident is a delusional fool.
hope this helps.

I live in Hoover, graduated from UAB, attended a great many games at Legion Field, worked security for the "Classic," have volunteered with various groups in the area to provide meals to the homeless and repair homes for the indigent, and I worked right across the street from Linn Park for quite some time.
I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've seen it all first hand.

Anyone who believes Birmingham is a safe place with a functional government is a complete moron who enjoys taking unnecessary risks.
ETA 2: If anyone wants to know why you should stay away from Birmingham, look for the City Council meeting video from the meeting where the Council finally approved funding for Protective Stadium. Listen to the public comments. If you are white, the majority of the citizens of Birmingham hate you so much that they are willing to go on record in a public meeting and spell out their hatred of you.

I grew up in West End, parked at a friend's grandmother's house, and walked to & from the celebrity game.
There's a huge difference between being aware of your surroundings and comparing the neighborhood to Somalia while being fearful of being at a heavily policed sporting event after dark.
