I'm not buying that. Y'all act like Ricks was at some podunk school. He was a starting CB at LSU! Corey Raymond, who coached all of the recent LSU stud DBs coached Ricks. The kid was coached up and ready to roll when he got to Tuscaloosa. Saban for whatever reason didn't want to give the kid the job until he could no longer avoid it. And, Corey Raymond turned down an opportunity to be on Bama's staff.
You realize that different schools run different defenses and schemes...right? How long have you followed Alabama football? Do you recall people talking about how Saban's defense is extremely complex and difficult to learn? That's one of the reasons why so few Freshmen play on defense.
Yes, Ricks came in with great coverage skills, but if he doesn't know his responsibilities on any given down, none of that matters.

Ricks is the only CB we have that can play the back shoulder throws consistently. Rick has the best man-to-man coverage skills. Ricks does not have the speed to handle deep routs unless he can bump-&-run. Ricks is not great at playing zone.
The biggest issue for Ricks is knowing what to do. Saban's D requires each person to do their job. If you gamble and miss or do not execute a call, it will result in a potential long score. Twice tonight that happened. Lucky for him/us Ms State did not execute on those plays.
Rick now owns the starter spot but he must be more consistent with execution of the called plays. If he does that, he will be gone in the first round and our passing D will continue to improve. Lets hope he has made the turn and runs away from the competition at CB.

Saban did say that every job was up for grabs after the TN loss. Maybe that was just his way of saying we're going to start playing the better players instead of sparing players' feelings
I don't know as much about football as a lot of the posters here, but there's one thing I'm pretty sure of. Nick Saban couldn't give a Tinker's damn about sparing players feelings when it comes to decisions about who starts. He has his own reasons for the personnel decisions he makes, and we may not agree with them at face value. He may even be wrong about some of them, even though he has far more access to information than we do as fans. But looking at his driven nature, bordering on an obsessive and single minded desire to win, he doesn't make personnel decisions based on sparing player's feelings. That's too simplistic. Maybe he values knowledge of his system too much, or a player's proven record of performance in big situations, or countless other things.

He said this about the Tua/Jalen situation. I'm paraphrasing, but he said something like "I'm a loyal guy, and Jalen had won a lot of games for us as a starter. It was tough to make the switch."
Why is it so hard to believe that the coaches have personal relationships with the players, and develop real bonds? Nick Saban wants to see as many players get drafted as possible. He's been in these guy's homes. He knows all of their parents. I'm sure it's tough to potentially ruin a kid's chances of getting drafted just because you've got a younger guy who's a little better. This is why I think Saban typically leaves the older guys as starters until he really feels like he NEEDS the younger talent to win.

Which goes to what I said about him valuing players that had experience and proven performance in big games. He wouldn't have been so loyal to players who hadn't gotten the job done in the past. Can't blame him for that. He wants to win, now he may not always make the best choice regarding players, but you can bet he does what he thinks gives him the greatest odds overall to succeed.

Ricks is the best DB in the SEC. Those who know football know this

How about this for an assignment vs tenner:
"Cover Hyatt. He's the guy that's roasting our entire secondary."
Can't get any simpler than that.

Sometimes it comes down to what’s above the shoulders than what’s below. Eventually some get it.

Ricks needs to be assigned to the other team’s best WR or biggest mis-match. Just tell him to confine that guy to Ricks’ island for the entire game. Even wait for the guy at their field entrance after halftime, etc. Then meet back with his Bama teammates after the game.

PFF charted Ricks last night:
10 targets
1 reception allowed
19 yards allowed
5 forced incompletions

He was the number 1 CB prospect heading into the season and Saban’s stupid rule about needing to know the entire defense before you play kept him off the field. This isn’t a Juco transfer dude. We’ve all seen Ricks play against top competition already and he’s a stud.
Bingo. Do/run what the players are ABLE to do
