Yep. UVA is a better version of what Grant would have made us if he had actually recruited guys who could shoot.

Cronin is a big roll of the dice. Very similar resume to Grant: from a traditionally strong mid-major, has won, but not any more than the coaches before him. Usually early exit from the Dance, has had run ins with players and coaches.
Let’s not do that again. He’s not a home run.

I don't want him. Just throwing it out

I really like what I've seen from Nate Oats. His Buffalo team is impressive. I don't know why his name isn't higher on the list. I still have him & Steve Forbes as my top 2 guys, with Forbes being slightly ahead. I would be happy with either.
For whatever reason, I just can't get excited about Prohm. I know everyone is gushing over him right now, and he has done a solid job at Iowa State, but idk. It wouldn't be a horrible hire by any means, but I think there's better coaches out there.
I guess my number one concern with Prohm is a question I ask myself and all of you - "Would Steve Prohm be the top candidate for the job if he had no ties to the Alabama program?" My answer to that is no. And I don't want to hire someone just based on a connection to the school. I don't care if a coach is an "outsider" or whatever, I only want the absolute best guy we can get for job. Bringing in somebody bc he's an "Alabama guy" is a mistake that we've made in the past.
I may be totally wrong about Prohm, but it's just food for thought I guess.

Prohm wouldn't be my first choice. I really like what I saw with Buffalo.

Like I said before, it's not as if Prohm is only being considered because he is an alum. There is just no real incentive for a current P-5 coach to leave whatever job he's at for Alabama, unless that coach is Steve Prohm and graduated from Alabama. If it's not him it's almost certainly going to be a mid-major HC or someone currently out of coaching. Basically, if we can't get someone Hoiberg or Matta the only ways we are going to get a guy you know can win at this level of competition are running a big risk by hiring Kelvin Sampson/Slick Rick/Sean Miller or hiring Prohm. Almost anyone else would be totally unproven.

Sources tell me Fred Hoiberg has turned down the Nebraska job and will return to Iowa State as head basketball coach, as Steve Prohm has accepted the Alabama head job
Not sure if legit, but what the hell.

On a side note, my goodness UVA has a paint drying type style of play
Last year, they were 351/351 in KenPom adjusted tempo
The difference between them and #350 is the difference between #350 and #288
Even amongst the slow tempo teams, UVA is like watching paint dry

Steve Prohm
Is not "swinging for the fences".
Honestly, he's done okay, but he hasn't exactly been impressive at ISU. He has a sub .500 conference record. If we're going after former ISU coaches, I'd rather call Hoiberg first.

Billy Donovan owes us for his 26 point beat down on Alabama in 1987.

Yeah, if Prohm wasn’t an Alabama grad then there’d be no reason to think he’d even contemplate coming. He just won the Big 12 tournament title. The Alabama connection just gives us hope that we might have a shot at him.
Brannen would be the better example of a reach hire for a guy with “Alabama ties.”
