This is way too much to read. You're not saying anything new.

I think Kiffin helped convince him that size was secondary to speed and creating separation.
And particularly in the RPO era I’d take Waddle over George Pickens all day every day.
I actually suspect DeBoer likes having multiple types of weapons. He wants to stretch the field with some guys, be able to throw a fade to create a mismatch against a 5’7 defender with others and hit a seam route to the big WR/TE guys to keep the defense honest as well.
It’s why I was hoping it would work out with Odom, if instead of Cuevas on a go route against a LB you have a 4.5 guy like Odom that’s both a great weapon against a blitz and a way to further stretch a defense to open up the run game.
Towards the end of the Saban era ('21-'23), I think the fact that our WR room was slap arse full of 6'1'' 200lb receivers was more of a hinderance. If these guys didn't have moves like Smitty at the line of scrimmage, they'd often get jammed up by physical DB play. The quality of our WR coaching took a nose dive when Wiggins took over, so those smaller receivers weren't developing the toolkit to overcome physical coverage.

It’s not sunshine pumping, it’s how the DeBoer/Grubb offense looks with a functional QB.
Exactly. 2023 Washington is what DeBoer wants to build here, but with even better talent.
The difference is night and day. That offense was in a whole different universe - primarily due to the QB position.
If DeBoer can build an offense like that at Alabama, and Keelon seems capable of being that QB, maybe even Austin Mack, then Alabama will be a force to be reckoned with going forward.

Wiggins is President of the Pete Golding, Doug Marrone, and Bill O'Brien fan club, because we win a title in 21 if there is any player development whatsoever behind Jamo and Metchie.

The entire team had to adapt to new terminology this year, as well as installing a new offense and defense. Hopefully, they play faster next year, and things come easier, just based on increased familiarity.
I doubt that the players disrespected DeBoer any more than they would have any other coach. It's just a different world with players now. I see the same crap from players on every team, including Georgia, Ohio State, etc. Undisciplined compared to teams from the past, hot headed, poor judgement at crucial times. The coaches aren't allowed as much time to coach the players as they used to, and they aren't allowed the control they used to have.

The problem is that, IMO and going along with my first post in this thread, there are people in our fan base who not only can't conceive of Alabama winning other than a certain way offensively, they don't WANT Alabama to win other than a certain way offensively.

Confusion was evident then, you saw repeatedly players out of position. I think they reverted in many cases to b what was drilled into them for years instead of their current responsibility

This! Haha. The mood on this board all year has been almost as bad as when the plains were burning. An old football coach told me once that "it's never as good as it seems, and it's never as bad as it seems". I really hope Milroe leaving will give some of these posters the relief they need because this place is unbearable sometimes with the non stop bitching and moaning.

Neither is a competent QB to run DeBoer's offense...

Some of those guys are tall but not particularly big but also none of them had a ton of success here.

And neither is a functional/ or proven NFL QB(eg Penix) on Bama roster yet.

Don't worry, Ty, you'll get your shot in the off session. Or you can hit the portal.

Saban and his project QB's caused this. The LANK/STANK rot made it worse and it all got dumped on DeBoer.

Alabama's NIL power brokers were trying to discuss an offer with Drake Maye's representation but he never pulled the trigger on it. I think Saban had our guys shopping for a QB but nobody on his short list was interesting in hoping in the portal. Was that list just Drake Maye who he had offered a scholarship in the past? I don't know but Saban did have eyes on improving the QB situation from the outside in 2023.
We've been "stuck" with Jalen Milroe for 2 years because we could not buy our way out of it. However, Drake Maye or any other likely rental QB only gets us past 2023. Could've given Saban the opportunity to retire on the very top with a national title though.

We had Tua for 3 years, although hurt a lot, and only won the natty in his Fr. year when he had to come in to save us in Atlanta.

I do feel like Alabama was a QB short of a national title last year. Milroe improved enough to get them into the discussion but he was not ready for that smoke when facing that veteran and well coached Michigan defense. We were pretty much reduced to just challenging Michigan's manhood with power runs and it got us close but could've won with ease with a more competent passer.
So yeah, you're right that an elite QB guarantees nothing. Tua only got a title coming off the bench in 2017 despite having elite talent around him on offense in 2018 and 2019. Defense was bad in 2018 and 2019 but also injuries plagued him and the team generally in both of those seasons.
However, I think seeing how 2023 played out that it is fair to say that a better passer would've made everything snap to grid.
Nobody is happy with our staff right now but frankly they've done a better job of recognizing who Jalen Milroe is and built the offense to highlight him as a run and deep ball thrower. Rees seemed to only want to have him run the ball when absolutely necessary and otherwise wanted him to be pocket passer. DeBoer and Sheridan have never tried to force Milroe to be something he's not. The ceiling of what the offense can be with him doing what he's good at is not championship caliber but they did win 9 games and beat several quality opponents in 2024.

quote:Even watching film from this year, you can see the concepts (albeit limited due to QB play), and they’re frighteningly good. The OC or DeBoer manage to scheme guys wide open with so much misdirection.
You should watch the UW tape from last year.
The system is there, we just need a trigger man who can operate it.

hurt a lot
His problems persist. 2019 was a destiny type year for the swamp trash tigers. shite happens, but I dont think Tua had a healthy ankle or hip.
2021 Metchie and Jamo going down in the SECCG and NCG respectively hurt. That team should've won it all. 2022 was the BY show. He willed us to the brink, but the greatest scorer in NCAA history missing a FG in Knoxville, and a pick play not called (uncalled pick play cost BAMA a title in 2016 too, but I digress) in red stick derailed another title run. 2023 was all Milroe. There isn't a game BAMA won that a better passer couldn't have won but there were two losses that could've been different had he been smarter.
It's easy to see that BAMA was an ankle and a hip, 2 knees, one foot, and a brain from a 5peat (2019-2023).
What if I told you that among Tua, Jalen Hurts, Mac Jones, Bryce Young, and Jalen Milroe, the only qb to win a title as a starter would be Mac Jones?
Nobody would believe it.
