Makes me wonder...Phil has already parted ways with the Senior Bowl, which he revitalized. Now he's stepping away from the mike? I hope nothing is wrong.

At least provide a link.

quote:

Changes are coming to the broadcast booth of Alabama football games.

Phil Savage, the color analyst on Crimson Tide radio broadcasts, is leaving that post. The announcement was made Thursday evening on Twitter .

He is going to be the GM for the Phoenix team in the new Alliance of American Football professional football league. I assume that’s at least part of the reason for his departure from Alabama.

ETA: Yep, looks like his other football interests are the reason that he is leaving:

quote:

"Coach Mal Moore and the Crimson Tide Sports Network gave me an opportunity to audition during the 2009 A-Day game," Savage said in a statement released with his announcement. "Little did we know that one game would turn into nine incredible years as the color analyst alongside Eli Gold. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent focused on college football, at the Reese's Senior Bowl and with the University of Alabama, but am looking forward to being back in professional football as the General Manager of the Phoenix franchise in the new Alliance of American Football league, in addition to continuing my other football-related pursuits."

I never really liked him, honestly.

"Make a man miss!" was by far his best call and he was kind of hacky most of the time. I grew up loving Stabler, though, so I might be biased.

I bet they move Chris Stewart up.

Stewart might be the next play by play man, but I don't think he'll be the color guy. Maybe Roger Shultz

We don't have any lurking "Stan Whites", do we? I'd hate to ruin Bama broadcasts with someone like him.

Ryan Fowler asked on Twitter who people would like to see as the next color analyst. The consensus is Alphonse Taylor. If you follow him on Twitter, you’d understand.

I think Barrett Jones would be good at it.

Isn't B Jones on an NFL team?
Savage also did a scouting report on Ala's next opponent and gave it to Saban. He found something on TAMU a couple of years ago that tipped off whether they were running or passing the ball. Reuben Foster had a monster game because of it.

Stabler was loveable because he is/was a friendly guy and an Alabama legend with a great personality but strictly speaking as an analyst wasn't that great. I know that may be sacrilegious to say but he wasn't polished at all...which some would argue actually added to his appeal.

I liked Savage and consider him leaving a big loss. He was very good in that role and brought a player evaluation expertise that is rare among college color analysts. Very professional in his delivery. Although deep down he was obviously a Bama homer you could never tell listening to him on broadcasts.

As for Savage's replacement, I could see them giving the job to someone like Tyler Watts. He's OK and wouldn't be my first or even second choice but he's done TV and radio work and is a former player. I love Jay Barker as a great person and former player but he's awful on the radio imho. Very dry and doesn't move the needle and would be our version of Stan White imho. No thanks

Nope, he was last on an NFL team in 2015.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Tyler Watts (the most obvious choice) or maybe someone like John Parker Wilson, who does weekly segments with radio shows in Birmingham.

If Savage announced he's leaving last night, then that means Saban and Crimson Tide Network have known for a while. I'm sure Saban will have ideas on replacement and will ask CTSN to consider that individual or individuals.

G. Mac might be their guy. He's intelligent, well-spoken and certainly is willing to tone down or hide homerism. 'Bama doesn't really do homers, IMO.

not a chance. He makes more doing work on Saturdays for ESPN than what CTSN would pay him.

G-mac wants to keep doing the investment thing M-F, host a radio show in the am, do his SECN work, and increase his national TV profile with his weekend air-time.
