The White House National Security Council tweeted this this morning:

Based on the number of cars on the road during my morning commute there doesn't appear to be too many businesses shut down in the Montgomery area.

And now for a little humor at Tennessee's expense:

There's fewer vehicles in school areas.

Traffic was a LOT lighter in Bham this morning. Schools being closed is likely the biggest reason for that. I think it'll get lighter and lighter as the week goes on though. We're moving to working from home over the next day or two, so won't be there until Wednesday or Thursday.

So I just found out I work in the same building, one the same floor and on the same hallway as the state's 1st confirmed case of the virus. The bathrooms I use are directly across the hall from this person's office.

ETA: Just took a shite in said bathroom.

I went to South Korea in November. I've been living with this virus for months. All of us have.

Look at the cruise ship data that was just released. This is just like the flu. Nothing more.

I've had the same conversation with friends. We've noticed that many people recall having had a strange illness around the holidays, with negative tests for (the typical) flu.

I personally find it hard to believe that what's being reported are the first actual cases in the entire country, when it's been known to exist since, what, October?

Does make you wonder.

My wife was one of them. She felt like shite for a few days and tested negative for the flu and strep. None of my 3 kids, or me, felt bad at all.

Yep. A doctor friend of mine said his office had multiple instances of people coming in for flu like symptoms, but tested negative for it. They were baffled at the time, and he's now concerned this virus is more entrenched here than we know.

Been wondering that myself. I had a coworker who developed a really bad cough early in January and he had been to Chicago visiting family for Christmas. It lasted for about a month and no doctor could tell him what it was because he tested negative for everything.

Well, have you guys read the whole conspiracy theory that the virus actually originated here in the States, probably at USAMRIID at Ft. Detrick? The story goes that it was an engineered virus and either accidentally or deliberately was transported to Wuhan with the US team for the military world games in that area and was unleashed on the world at the seafood market in Wuhan. There's a study by a virologist from Taiwan that supposedly studied the virus and found 5 separate haplotypes (variants) of it and the only country where he found all 5 haplotypes was the US which would point to the US being the origin.

Like I said, it's a very deep conspiracy theory with just enough factual information to make it possible and slightly plausible, but it's interesting at least.

Conspiracy elements aside, it is factual that in January, the chair of Harvard University's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology was arrested by the FBI for lying about a lucrative contract he signed with China's Wuhan University of Technology.

NPR: Acclaimed Harvard Scientist Is Arrested, Accused Of Lying About Ties To China

quote:

In an affidavit unsealed Tuesday, FBI Special Agent Robert Plumb said Lieber, who led a Harvard research group focusing on nanoscience, had established a research lab at the Wuhan university — apparently unbeknownst to Harvard.

"Lieber was also awarded more than $1.5 million by WUT and the Chinese government to establish a research lab and conduct research at WUT."
