Penn State team whose only “ranked” win was over FEI 35 Illinois.

How should have it been arranged? Penn State played SMU. They could have gotten South Carolina, Bama, or Ole Miss if the committee didn't buckle to media pressure and voices of fans. How do you think those teams would have done at Penn State. Illinois did beat South Carolina.
I can only imagine how Milroe would have looked in Happy Valley on a cold December day. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!

Dart would have shredded their secondary.
Milroe would've given them trouble. ND's qb runs were just effective enough when they needed them. Milroe is a much better runner, too.

Just got to run in the opposite direction as #11.

Just like he gave Oklahoma trouble? Just like he gave Michigan trouble?

Penn State had the #9 rushing defense and #7 defense overall. They would have absolutely shut down Milroe just like every other top 30 defense has. Some of y'all guys...LOLOLOL!
Milroe would have been sitting on the bench with a blanket over him pouting just like the other games he lost.

Good defense on the road was not kind to my team this year.

I don't think we could have won at South Bend or State College with No. 4 driving the car. Notre Dame's defense is nasty too.

As for the OP ... yes Freeman is impressive. He seems like a solid, business-like, no BS leader and his people seem like they want to play for him. There are a lot of teams who would have slipped a cog and packed it in after what happened against Northern Illinois, but he kept them on track.

And they don't look like they're setting the world on fire, but they're getting W's. Again, that's all that matters, you don't get extra credit for style points or how many 5-stars are on your roster. You get W's, you get to play for the big trophy.

In the time now of the NIL and Transfer Portal, does the ratings system mean anything anymore?

How about the same way as the men’s basketball tournament?

You can give out auto qualifiers to second tier leagues if you must, but they shouldn’t be guaranteed a bye.

Then you come up with standard and objectively measured criteria going into the tournament so everyone knows what’s being evaluated with injuries factored in like they did last year or in the basketball tournament. I would use the FEI as a primary factor and then the committee would act as a final arbiter to make sure a statistical anomaly doesn’t cause a weird outcome (7 win USC was highly ranked in the FEI but had no business being considered).

In this case it would’ve likely been something like this:

Oregon (1 seed bye - auto)
Ohio State (2 seed bye)
UGA (3 seed bye - auto)
Texas (4 seed bye)
ND (5) v Boise (12 - auto)
TN (6) v Clemson (11 - auto)
Ole Miss (7) v ASU (10 - auto)
PSU (8) v Bama (9)

That sets up a MUCH more competitive 2nd rd without loophole paths to the Semis like Texas got this year:
Oregon (1) vs Penn State (9)
Texas (4) vs ND (5)
OSU (2) v Ole Miss (7)
UGA (3) v Tennessee (6)

ND quarterback is not sub par.
We would be in the playoff if we had that QB. I would take him any day.

OK nerd. Stats aren't everything. PennSt has a great defense vs Perdue and Northwestern and MichSt.

The three teams with a pulse they played beat them.
BAMA has at least as much of a pulse as fricking Notre Dame.

Yeah. But with NIL and the portal, there's no more Cokering your way into a title. You better be ready to bust out the checkbook to keep damn near anybody, regardless of how good the hire.
