I found Galu’s comments interesting, to say the least. It’s unfortunate that the shutdown didn’t allow for spring camp, but Lia could have competed this fall.

I guess I thought he would have had a different sense of the competition, considering Tua was on the other side of a QB battle.

Best of luck to them.

lost a lot of respect for Galu as he dissed NS about not letting him compete. He was a true freshman. Did they expect him to be tabbed the backup to his brother from day one. Good luck to him but not sure dad and NS will be sending each other Christmas cards.

The only thing I really see wrong with Galu's comments were his choice of words.

quote:

“It’s really tough and it’s nothing against Alabama,” Galu Tagovailoa said. “But my boys are competitive and Lia is such a competitive kid. And he wanted an opportunity to compete. He was told that he was going to come in and compete and he didn’t really get that opportunity, so he wanted to use the spring to do that. But with the COVID-19 thing going on, he didn’t really have the opportunity to compete. He’s a competitor. He likes to work. He likes to compete on the field. And just, going into the season this year, he just felt that he wasn’t given that opportunity and he wants to take it somewhere where they’re going to give him the opportunity to make the best of his skill set.”

Obviously it wasn't a matter of him not being given the opportunity but rather he was behind his world beater brother, and then the cv19 quarantine disadvantaged him. I don't believe that that isn't obvious to Galu.

If he had have left out the "he was told" and "wasn't given" part, it would've sounded a lot better. He should've just left it at "covid-19 quarantine didn't allow him to compete, and he feels that he is too far behind the ball at Bama now."

Overall, I don't really have a big problem with what he said. Not that big of a deal.

Same, I didn't really see much newsworthy in there.

It's a benign statement that was made inartfully. Taulia and Galu knew his shot was going to be this spring before Mac could solidify himself and Young could learn the playbook, but now Mac is going to head into the fall as the presumptive starter and he has another year of eligibility left after this. Taulia would be competing with Young this fall for backup snaps and it's potentially another wasted year of eligibility.

Something I always find funny is parents or players who leave always say the coach told me I would get this or have a shot at that. I’ve physically been present with a recruit and coach and he is so freaking careful of what he says. It’s always “ you will have an opportunity to compete”.

Anyway. On to the season !

mac's job is solid. I doubt anyone is going to supplant him in the first half of the season. Especially coming out of spring and fall camp. He would have to have a major downfall to lose his job this year

Mac's job is not solid. Bryce Young was recruited and signed with Bama to be QB1, not the backup. I think Young will win the job before November.
