Big Steve is gonna knock somebody's head off this year. Just need to get him some reps early in the year to get him some confidence and experience.

He is strong like bull. I really like this DL on paper. But we need some guys to step up. We could be really deep. I think Faga, Simmons, Hill, and Beamon are all ready to roll with the 2nd wave of DL.

Who do we think is the 6th OL/3rd OT? Nick Brooks? Do we think we will see some of that this year? I like it and I think CKD likes to overload the line sometimes.

Delgatty seems to be the chosen one at center. Who is the backup?

I was hoping Haywood would fit in the mix somewhere but somebody mentioned he is far behind the others so IDK maybe Brooks

I just don’t understand. Please don’t think I’m being disrespectful/rude or whatever.

I know Division 1-AA is a loooong ways from a major D-1A program, but the game is pretty much on the same level schematically, and you see lots of successful coaches come through these ranks….Kirby got his start at D-2 Valdosta State for example.

The OC I coached TE’s under became the OC for Todd Graham at Arizona State just two years later without ever having coached above D-1AA

It gets very complicated at that level. And guys who make it big like CKD who worked his way from the NAIA level (smaller than D-3) all the way to the pinnacle of the sport are just different.

CNO was a high school coach for over 10 years and a school teacher, and now is doing unprecedented things for Bama basketball.

Then you hear media constantly talking about your deficiencies as if the game is easy enough (at that level) for a 12 year old that plays Madden to figure out.

Breaking multiple games down for an OC/DC at that level is typically 30-40 hours to finish if you have a few good GA’s to split it up, and you start to really appreciate how crazy it gets for something as simple as Sean McVay calling a PA pass for a routine 15yd gain that no one will remember two plays later.

Just soooo much goes into it, and fans and media (especially) rationalize it by making it as simple as “Bama has to run the ball better if they ever want to improve offensively”.

I always want to ask people when they say that, then how did they drop 355 yards and 34 points on Georgia with Milroe in just a single half of football?

A typical response is “well yeah Milroe played really well in the 1st half”.
So, does that mean the offense doesn’t have to run the ball well if the QB has a good game?

It’s just never that simple and I don’t know if Bama fans will ever come to accept that the run game is there to compliment the passing game. Now, that doesn’t mean they throw it 50 times a game and run it 10. CLD has always been pretty balanced when it comes to number of runs compared to passes.
The difference is that CKD doesn’t view rushing the football for 4.4ypc compared to just 3.8 will ever be the path to winning a National Title.

Please don’t think I am being disrespectful either but I have no idea what you are asking in this post

Yes, big time college football and professional is very complicated . I coached for 25 years at the HS level and was a coordinator on both sides of the ball . I have heard some of the best coaches in the country from HS coaches all the way to Saban. Hell, Larry Fedora once talked for a solid hour on one tunnel screen play
I agree that you don’t have to pound the rock to be successful as the game has changed and the offense has all the advantages . I think most people are just frustrated that we couldn’t get a consistent push when we needed it against even inferior completion ( not just 3rd or 4th and 1) . Defenses are so fast these days and it doesn’t take much of a missed assignment for a play to be blown up . Running is the easiest thing to do IF you have the horses to do it . I personally like a 60/40 pass ratio if I am being honest . You know as well as I do that a defense can take away the run if they want to . In fact , defense will sacrifice coverage in order to stop the run. You better be able to throw the ball in today’s game

This what I would like to see more of in our offense , especially with RW. Sark was so good at dialing this stuff up

Everything you are saying is spot on.

The only thing I’m pointing out is with so many wondering “will this offense improve”, and “we have to fix the run game”, is that the coaches aren’t focusing on that.

I’m not claiming they don’t care, or aren’t trying to improve, but it’s not a top priority like it is for the fans.

We saw Ty excel in the intermediate passing game, and the well-designed situational throws on Goal-to-go, or 4th and short, the pass to Jam Miller to seal the Georgia win in Athens,

The offense uses as many complex/unique formations with motion almost every snap creates so many problems for a defense.

Really effective inside the 10 using jet sweeps, laterals (Proctor), reverse pass Bernard threw vs South Carolina to win the game, using the TE in the MOF, and as the primary target on RPO’s the same way Spread offenses do with a WR (killed OU with it), triple option pitch to Rico Scott to score 1st drive of the season, etc etc etc

The redzone area really demonstrates how good/creative the offense should be and could be in the open field.

The scripted start against Georgia year 1 in the first half was as beautiful as anything Kyle Shannahan has done.

The guy is 7-1 vs Sark, Lanning and Kirby combined, and threw for 350-500 yards in everyone of those wins.

CKD knows he must get the downfield passing game going. That’s where it begins and ends for him. Fans think a first down conversion on 3rd and short or averaging .5 yard more per carry will improve the offense (and it will). But CKD wants to put up 40 every week and he knows 4.2ypc isn’t it.

Again, idk if Bama fans will ever embrace using the run game as a compliment to throw the ball, but hopefully he wins enough that they can stomach it.

I agree we need to go the two gap route much sounder system against the run. You can run the 425 with three 300 lbers on the Dline and a rush end, on 3rd run out another rush end to replace a big guy or let the big guy rush the passer, sometimes those big tackles don't handle a big guy very well.

Indiana just won the natty and never did this.

They had a few situations where their run game was contained and they had to hit one on ones and did it. They became one of the highest success rate at fade passes I’ve seen in some time.

But it wasnt like they were a triple option team that changed to the fun and gun.

Theyre rushing vs passing yards are remarkably similar throughout the season in conference/playoff games. Miami and Oregon both out-gained them in total yards. And they put 56 on OU.

Grubb worries too much about 'out cute-ing' teams rather than just out-playing them. And he isn't going to change at this point.

You mention UW a lot with Penix at QB. Don't you think Mack and his experience in the system gives him the edge over KR? Experience and poise seem to me to be more important than what little would be sacrificed in mobility. I mean... Mack isn't a statue.

Playing Russell isnt about the increased mobility. It's about the increased big play ability with the passing ggame. The wheels are just icing on the cake.

I actually think Mack can be a very effective runner, not necessarily on designed runs but when the pocket breaks down.

I think Grubb will change, much Womack has had to change his one gap scheme, to a two gap scheme, also playing some man to man press coverage.

Yeah I’m sure it helps. I think he would do a good job, and I’m sure if the staff thinks he runs the offense better than you just have to trust them.

However, for me personally, I believe KR is a special talent……the type that elevates a Syracuse to a conference title or Purdue to a Rose Bowl. It has nothing to do with not liking Mack, it’s just unfortunate for him that he stuck competing against a very special talent.

I don’t feel bad for him because he’s going to leave with all the development he’s gotten and lead a team to a good record in 2027

Barn wins 10 games last season if Mack were their QB1.
