I can’t figure out how Hurts got progressively worse every game since he first played against USC.

That's because he didn't. If he was progressively worse in every game since USC in 2016, then how do you explain his performance in the Arkansas and Mississippi State games that year? He also played pretty good against Kentucky, Tennessee, and Auburn in '16 as well...

As for 2017, he played very well against Colorado State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and MSU...we don't win against MSU without him...

I think Tua is the future and should be the starter going forward...Hurts is too inconsistent and seems not to be able to pull the trigger against the better defenses...but to say he was progressively worse in every game since his debut has no basis in fact...

Outside of a big game against State

His game vs MSU wasn't that great, 10 for 19, 242 yds, 1 TD. He hit a short pass to Ridley that he turned into a 63 yd TD. Ridley had 171 yds on 5 catches, he turned a lot of short passes into big gainers.

He took 5 sacks, and several of these were caused by not scrambling soon enough or not throwing the ball away. On one of them he just ran out of bounds about 10 yds behind the LOS.

He netted 40 yds rushing with a TD on 19 attempts.

We were 3 of 10 on 3rd down.

D. Smith made a good catch on the winning TD, he had to turn and catch it off his back shoulder.

Daboll just didn't seem to have the ability to highlight his strengths and mitigate his weaknesses based on my observation.

To be fair, Daboll is a life long NFL guy. They don't have Jalen-like QB's in the NFL. When Tua came in, Dabaoll's play calling looked brilliant. i wish we could get year of Tua and Daboll and see what he could do.

Definitely, but I still wish he could have been a bit more flexible to help out the team's starting qb. Look at what Philly did by going back and putting in plays to help out their qb.

We won the NC so can't say it was a bad hire but with his reported lack of recruiting ability and all I don't think he would have been a long term option.

Yeah that's a problem at the college level - LOL

Daboll is really a career NFL guy

We should've beaten Clemson by a lot more for sure. It was sorry as hell that we couldn't muster up anymore points after the 3rd Quarter. Clemson was begging for us to MTAQ.

I think Jalen "peaked" around the LSU game in 2016. He hasn't been the same QB since. I think it was coached into him that he was a freshman and he shouldn't take any risks whatsoever. Unfortunately, that just sort of got embedded into his QB DNA. Nobody really noticed his shortcomings until the NOTs stopped happening. It was clear to impartial observers that our offense had a ceiling of around 24 points with Jalen at the helm.

Daboll's playcalling left a lot to be desired too.

Definitely, it may have just been a stop gap hire since the way it all played out in 2016

Maybe another reason why we slipped some in recruiting this year as well. Daboll didn't want to recruit and we had uncertainty at the OC position.

Hurts going from freshman SEC POY to what he was this past season is the biggest head scratcher I have seen. Just unreal like it was two different QBs. He played like a scared kid this season. Just mind boggling. I can’t get my head around it.

The game #2 had VS the Barn is 2016 was very telling. The two picks were something you might have expect from Jeremy Johnson. #2 was the best Wildcat QB that ever started 29 games and only lost 2.

Kiffin got him a ton of "passing yds" off of jet sweeps and other short passes to the sideline. The defense and special teams also kept him bailed out more than usual with a lot of NOT's.

3 and outs killed us vs CU for the natty.

Agree 100%. He was just as bad last year. Kiffin helped his passing stats look much better than they were

It's not Sabans fault Jalen still can't read a defense when every other QB with less talent has managed to do it.

I don't know if I'd go THAT far. He got a lot better in 2016 and the downward spiral seemed to happen mostly in 2017.

The receivers were dropping passes all year. It's not Jalen's fault

Yep. Get 2 first downs in the 3rd and Bama probably wins.

Hurts biggest problem is he can’t see the field. He misses wide open receivers all the time.

If Daboll was a stop gap measure, why not just promote Locksley to begin with and be done with it? There’s a lot of puzzling questions about the Daboll situation, recruiting aside. Rumors are that Daboll wanted Tua much earlier in the year and got overruled. He also supposedly told Saban he didn’t know how to call plays for Hurts and Locks inserted our RPO plays last season. I certainly don’t know the whole story but I’d like to know more. It sounds totally dysfunctional for a Saban staff from the get-go

Blake Sims was a bad passer, too.

Then, he wasn't.

It's called coaching.

But Hurts's decline as a passer started long before Daboll set foot on campus.

Maybe...but his play calling was pretty damn good when he suddenly had a QB who could throw the ball down the field.
