Holloway has got to develop some counters in his game for when he faces teams that have the length and athleticism to take away or aggravate jumper but also not let him blow by on the first step on his right hand dribble drive. I think the answer is he needs to become a facilitator, accept that he's not going to get a clean look at the rim in those situations but suck up the defense and kick it out.

Getting Bowen to play with energy and focus consistently seems to be a key for this season. I wouldn't be surprised if Allen - Bristow - Sherrell becomes the starting front court eventually. Bowen seems like a better fit for the bench right now. His effort is too inconsistent. Maybe playing from the bench will help motivate him.

There are 3-4 seasons over the Avery Johnson/Nate Oats years where I’ve said to myself “this team can make a run for a national championship.”

This is not one of those years.

Holloway is a frustrating player. He isn't like Philon who probably averages around 20-24 points a game and who you can count on to score 20-24 points a game. Holloway may average 22 points a game but he'll do it by scoring 40 one game and 4 the next.

UNLV at 11PM at the earliest. Someone else will have to start today’s game thread because this loss has caused me to lose that privilege.

Also, Williamson is probably going to be relegated to a "foul trouble emergency big" sooner or later. Sherrell is somewhat disappointing because it feels like he doesn't play to his capabilities. He straight up was not hustling on a few occasions when the Zags pulled away late. However, I still want to believe Oats and staff can push the right buttons to get Sherrell where he needs to be. He did play better in some respects despite the late effort issues leaving a bad taste for me.

I still believe Sherrell sacking up and playing like he's a 7-footer is the key to this season. I'm fine with him not averaging a double-double if he's averaging closer to 1.5-2 blocks per game. You're going to miss out of rebounds when going for blocks. It is incumbent that the forwards and guards clean up the shots he affects. However, he does need to be pulling down about 7 rebounds per game in my opinion. 3.6 rpg is much too low for a power conference starting center.

The Sexton year had promise. It was a dangerous team, just unfortunately caught Villanova in Round 2. Played them tough though.

It's game 5 dude. And we haven't played a single game with all our players available.

I have my doubts that this team could make a national championship run without good fortune with how their path through the bracket comes together. There are certain types of teams I don't know if this roster possesses the ability to beat. There aren't many of them but they tend to be a team you run into by the 2nd weekend of the tournament.

However, it is early and some sort of epiphany may happen with Sherrell in terms of playing to his body type and Bowen in terms of consistent effort and intensity.

What I will credit Oats with, he went out and scheduled a large majority of those teams early in the season. So hopefully the players under no illusion that what they are today is enough to beat these types of teams in March.

Sherrell is a soft big.

This is somewhat true, but he plays decently strong 1:1 post defense. His rebounding is quite bad, though.

He wouldn’t even get on the ground for a loose ball.

Honestly, I didn’t blame him on that one. If he goes to the ground, he either picks up another foul (and foul trouble is a problem for him) or the guy picks it up while he’s going down and dunks it on him. I was much more frustrated at the 4 other players around him that didn’t go to the floor while he still protected the rim. I don’t remember who was closest, but there was a wing just a couple feet away that should have been the Bama player that went to the ground for it. Think there was a 2nd guy on the other side that could have dove for it as well. When a big guy puts the ball on the floor in a crowded paint, it’s almost always the guards or wings that get the steal…not the center playing 1:1 defense. That play wasn’t on Sherrell IMO

Strongly disagree. I like this team. The only Nate Oats team I would take over this one is 2023

I feel like its been obvious that this team is much better than they showed in last nights game and against Purdue. Rebounding absolutely killed us in both. Even when we seemingly have position it bounces off their fingers and they lose it. They gotta clean that up. Its fixable. If we clean that up-that is worth several points a game.

They had some absolute bunny layups that just did not fall That and Philon's game translates to lots of chances at the line. He HAS to shoot 80% plus

There;s no excuse for him being 60%.at the line. We lost by 10 last night Gonzaga was 19 for 23 we were 14 for 23. We shoot a decent percentage and make a couple of bunnies we are right there.

Bigs are getting a lot of the blame for the boards but there were countless times Mallette's man got the board or he was in a position to fight for the board and he just stood there. Weird game from him, as his effort is normally there.

exactly what happened. to be fair tyon grant foster seemed a far above average rebounder for a guard. good comment

quote:

If Bristow is healthy, he needs to be playing the most minutes for our bigs. Bol Bowen and Sherrell (solid tonight) are just so inconsistent especially on the defensive end. People keep talking about Bristow as the Stevenson upgrade, but he's our Mo upgrade. 11 boards in 19 minutes. He needs to be playing 25+ minutes.

i think it will be more about matchups. all 3 have produced pretty well on a per minute basis so far. against faster teams sherrell wont play as much but against the ones like zaga its on him to step up and last night showed hes capable. he held his own against arguably the best lowpost scorer in the country. people should be encouraged by that, even if he did gas out towards the end.
