I honestly feel like a lot of this is due to how the state system is split all over the place. We gave Auburn all of the innovative sciences and then gave away our medical school when we totally didn't have to. We have a lot of money in law and business, but we don't have the concentration of talent advantage that a lot of top football programs do (Ohio State, Georgia, Penn State, etc.)

There is truth to what you said. We absolutely should have never let Auburn take over the state in innovative sciences reputationally. Bama competes and usually beats AU when it comes to head to head Engineering competitions. In saying that, UA has brought in just south of $2B over the last 5 years for the capital campaign. So it's not like our Alumni doesn't have money, I believe we are all just waiting to see what comes with all this NIL shite. It's not sustainable the way it is and I don't believe most of us want to spend it on 18 year olds that are just going to leave the next season. I would rather spend it the way Byrne mentioned and that is retention of players that have proven their capabilities.

Employers don't give bonuses to employees that don't produce. They give the bigger bonuses to the ones that benefit the company in some way. That is what we should be doing with our athletes.

LSU is having Kelly match donors to drive theirs up.

FSU is taking money back from their coach to fund their NIL.

Would we rather have that model or reach out to the fans to support?
Hell yeah, I'd much rather these $9-10mm/yr coaches back their program's NIL than watch the damn AD pass the hat around to the fans, who're already pouring out thousands on season tickets, Tide Pride, merchandise and the cost to attend games all over the country to watch our teams.

What I'm not fine with is giving money to a booster collective so they can give it to a freshman on the football team who uses it to buy a Rolex, does frick all during the season, and then hits the portal for another payday.

This. 100%

If buying and retaining 5-stars means begging regular people to give $1,000+ a year on top of season tickets and/or just paying for games and things then I'm fine with the trade off of not fishing in that pond anymore.

Pushing working class people in a state like Alabama to pony up to pay salaries for football players at the expense of other things in their families lives is gross.

What happens when the state of Alabama does not have a lottery

Put a lotto on the ballot to fund Alabama and AU NIL collectives and I am pretty sure that passes.

much rather have him be honest about the situation and keep the NIL fund a donation rather than up charge stadium seats and concessions 2x... like the Tennessee collective recently admitted to.

Rest assured; those same increases are coming down the pike very soon at UA.

Posted this in the portal thread. From a high level source on another site:

Here is a true story of an Alabama football player who was NOT even a starter on this year's team -- it's not Mbakwe, but this story has some similarities to Mbakwe, and when taken into account with Mbakwe, it points out the depth of the battle Alabama is in to keep the players it wants/needs on it's roster.

This player received an offer very recently from another SEC school (not Auburn, before anyone asks) for roughly 800K. After speaking with DeBoer and giving further consideration to the offer, the player told the other school no thanks.

Next day the school came back with another offer -- they doubled it to 1.6M. Passing on the first offer was hard. But passing on 1.6M? Believe it or not, the kid passed again.

But the story doesn't end there.

Now the school has come back with an offer on the doorstep of 2M smackers!

I like Byrne but he can get fricked. My arse is already in drowning in student debt and I basically have to take out a loan just to buy a Pixie Stick at the football games for which ticket prices are already retarded high.

Lolololol if I'm going to send money to some entitled 18 year old who will take it and run as soon as Oklahoma State offers him an Aston Martin.

I don't think DeBoer realized the severity and critical nature of the situation stepping in for Saban.

Saban told the boosters what needed done and it got done, and in return he put a top 4, if not top 2, if not championship trophy in the case in return.

People don't give money to give it. Return on investment will always be paramount.

No matter how angry you get, or how many downvotes - it will still be true that DeBoer and staff *appeared to be in over their heads this year.

Anyone with a large position would take some risk off the table after witnessing this train wreck season.

If DeBoer was hanging his hat on being an offensive guru, why would anyone be buying his stock at the end of this season ?

People knew what they were getting investing in Saban. I think that display in Oklahoma have investors feeling very concerned, and how can you blame them.

He is in charge of the athletic department and sees a world in which Bama cannot compete in the NIL world with Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, Auburn, etc. His job is to make sure Bama sports are successful. I have no problem with him asking for people to contribute. I don't see the big deal. If we don't want to contribute, which I won't, then we don't have to contribute. We will continue to watch teams out recruit us in football and basketball going forward though due to NIL.

Should they be investing in a man or a brand?

And Saban was operating in a completely different universe that never will be again.

It really seems like there are folks here who sincerely want to blow the thing up because the world has changed in ways they don’t like.
