Wommack’s non-aggressive play calling is what got us here. We were blitzing at a 9% clip heading into this game, one of the lowest in the country. That’s with a DL that isn’t getting organic pressure on 3-4 man rushes and a secondary full of youth. It’s absolutely unacceptable that we aren’t trying to help out our young secondary by affecting the QB more.

It literally makes zero sense to do what he’s doing (or not doing, I guess)

I knew from his and player quotes about getting “more eyes on the football” that we were going to play a lot of zone . It can be effective but ours has too many holes

A good team will pick zone apart. Sit in the holes and wait for the pass. We need to be aggressive on the LOS. Win that and go from there.

If you can stop the run with 5 , you can play man with 2 high safeties and be aggressive . Saban liked to play that a lot but not sure we can stop stay in that type of defense yet

ETA - I prefer aggressive myself

A good zone is hard to teach kids IMO. Takes a lot of film study and “feel for the game “ players . Odom when he was at Arky got his kids to play it pretty well with what he had to work with

Got to get #34 on the field much more going forward. He has the speed to make stuff happen. He made the USCe QB throw before he wanted on the two point pass attempt.

He might grab the headgear of the QB as well.

#90 and #94 look promising as well with their minutes Saturday.

If you enjoy frustrating yourself, then watch the last 10 minutes of the game and see what a clusterfeck that was.

Agreed. 90 flashed some. Made some nice plays. Good motor.

He absolutely needs to get more minutes. He can rush the passer but also has the bulk to hold up against the run.

This is what kills me about Wommack. We play a ton of zone on manageable passing downs like 3rd and 9. It's insane. On 3rd and very long where you just want to keep the play in front of you it's fine, but if it's realistic for a player to run a short route, turn around, catch the ball, and immediately fall down for a first down you don't need to be playing zone in that situation. It's a huge reason why our 3rd down defense is fricking trash.

Maybe it is maybe not. It’s hard to tell if it’s more the scheme or talent. HTT, Harris, and Mack Wilson all look better in the NFL than they did in college. I’m not saying they’re All Pros in the NFL (especially Mack) but they look more physical and overall less confused. They got tons of criticisms here under Golding’s defense and coaching yet are all starting caliber NFL ILBs now

Justin Jefferson should be starting ahead of Campbell at this point. He’s better.

Probably something that is in a-lot of our heads but not typed out is this:

Our entire defense is playing a scheme they have never played. Our ILB’s are 3/4 guys. We need and this is my opinion to get Jefferson in because he simply attacks the runners. I get frustrated but have to remember this fact with our personnel.

Side note zone has been terrible for us on 3rd down.

Need 34, and 4 in the game a lot more.

It drives me crazy that a good bit of our 3rd down looks are DL stunts and soft zone. I dont think we need to be exotic in a pressure package but it's like he's scared to call a 5 or 6 man pressure with press man behind it until the last drive of the game Saturday. I would rather give up a deep ball to get the offense back on the field then allowing someone to throw a damn slant over and over again to convert a 3rd down.

I'd rather make the QB throw an accurate pass while under pressure on 3rd down and give up a TD than give up 10, 12, or longer drives that end up with a TD anyway.

If you bring an extra guy that puts your young DBs on an island, which can cause problems. But there's a chance you get a turnover or sack. As is, we are just getting murdered on 3rd down and giving up TDs anyway.

Preach. With that being said roster management has to be a PITA with NIL and the locker room.

Defensive stats for the past 4 years

2021 18th

20.1 points a game
302.9 yards a game allowed
4.8 avg yard per play
63.7 plays per game by opposing offense
85 yards ruching per 32 attempts
63% comp by QB
2.5 TDs a game
1.3 TOs per game
6.8 penalties per game for 49.5 yards each game

2022 9th

18.2 points per game
318 yards a game allowed
4.6 avg yards per play
69.3 plays per game
130 yards rushing per 35.9 attempts
54% comp by QB
2 TDs a game
1.1 TOs
6.7 penalties per game for 51 yards each game

2023 16th

19 points per game
316 yards a game allowed
63.1 plays per game
124 yards rushing per 33.6 attempts
59.3% comp by QB
2 TDs a game
1.4 TOs per game
5.1 penalties per game for 39 yards each game

2024 #41

20.8 points per game
342 yards a game allowed
73.8 plays per game
129 yards rushing per 38.8 attempts
58.6% comp by QB
2.3 TDs per game
2.0 TOs a game
5.7 penalties per game for 45.7 yards each game

The big things that stand out are the number of reps on defense which as someone pointed out earlier is an issues this season. Also teams seem to be more successful running the ball at us. QBs are not as successful but we need to get more pressure. Turnovers we are a head of pace.

I don’t think we are crazy off considering everything. We’ve also left what 5-6 TOs on the field? Wild.

It’s some of both. Alabama has not had elite DT since 2016. When you have studs on your front 7 it can mask a lot of deficiencies. Alabama has not been an elite defensive front for a long time now. Our LB play has not been elite since 2017 either. We wasted Will Anderson
