Bear Fretwell may have suffered a torn ACL in practice for the Max Emfinger All-American Bowl. ?

I hope that's not the case. He has great speed for an OL, I was looking forward to seeing how he would do in our offense.

AJ Harris, a CB is in the portal from Penn State.

He was the 2nd rated CB out of highschool and played ball in Alabama.

We gotta be an option for him, but dont know if hed even start here. We are loaded there.

He did really well in 2024, but played pretty poorly this year (he got benched at one point during the season as well). His PFF grade went from almost 80 in 2024 to below 60 this year.

I think he has one year of eligibility left since he burned his redshirt at UGA before transferring to PSU so I imagine he's going somewhere where he can start, and that's not here.

I dont think we will ever get the very best out of the portal. Just serviceable guys to fill in. Probably guys who didnt fully reach their potential at other schools. Like Overton

Overton was the exception. I hate to say it but most (not all but most) of the guys we’ve gotten out of the portal are crumbs. Not sure if that’s because Bama is broke or maybe they spend the $$$ on the current roster?

Schools that get quality upperclassmen will have an advantage.

We aren't ever going to be able to spend what Texas, Aggy, OSU, Michigan, etc. do and we don't have one or two rich boosters propping up the whole operation like Oregon, Miami, and TTU and we aren't the academic arm of the most successful and lucrative cult in world history like BYU, but I wouldn't say we are broke. We are probably in the top 20 in NIL. Those are the programs most of the pure bag chasers are going to though. Based on comments Morgan has made I do think we prioritize allocating money to guys already on the roster, so it seems like they value loyalty and roster continuity in a time when both have become exceedingly rare.

This is how it should be done as well.

Developing a team from within and adding supplemental portal pieces is still my ideal way of building a roster.

Agreed. Talent evaluation, shtewdly using your money, and maintaining team chemistry will be the most important components in this era, IMO.
