Let’s be honest guys, when you lose two wideouts (one of whom just transferred in) and your offense is toast, that’s a failure either on the recruiting or development front. You telling me, out of the last two classes we didn’t have one freakin’ WR who could go out there, run good routes, get some separation and actually catch a ball consistently? Not one? The class with Holden, Baker and Jones-Bell has been a disaster. The freshman class has not been much better. 7 made two big plays late in the season but when we needed him last night he was nowhere to be found. Earl hasn’t done jack all year. Leary can’t even get snaps. Hall finally got in and dropped half the damn balls that hit his hands. I sure hope this class we just signed is the real deal because the last two WR classes cost us a title last night. We might need to visit the portal again as well. Very disappointed in our young WR classes. When Slade Bolden is your best bet, you’re in trouble.

Yes, it’s barely been discussed around here.

There's no way we missed on that many receivers in the last two classes. I'm starting to think it's the development

To some degree guys need to play to develop. Maybe that’s a coaching failure by continuing to ride the same three guys all year. I don’t know if there’s a first rounder among the young guys but I still think there are some good players there.

That’s scary. And after we had like 30 first round WRs the last few drafts. We ought to be turning down 5 star WR recruits left and right!

This.

It's hard to get a wide receiver the ball when the defense is in the backfield before the WRs get off the line. Every. Play.

Couple that with an inept OC who has no imagination or creativity to get anyone the ball other than 1 or 2 guys.

I think our WRs will be fine if we can get a decent OC and OLine coach.

I thought the OL gave Bryce enough time on many of the throws. Not their fault Latu dropped a TD, Hall dropped a TD and another huge play, and not their fault guys like Slade and Holden are slow and can’t make anyone miss so they get tackled as soon as they catch the ball. Bryce also missed Holden for an easy TD once. None of that is on the OL. Agree BOB is terrible and I’ve been saying that all year. Dude needs to get back to the NFL where he belongs.

I'll never understand how Bryce committed but we couldn't get a prime receiver(s) to join him in the same class. Xavier Worthy and Boutte we wanted them both badly but neither would come to Bama. It's just one of those strange occurrences. I think if we get either of those two or both of them our offense is more potent. So, I feel like last year's class we definitely wanted Jojo and/or Leary to step up. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. So, this year we went and crazy speed. I just hope one or two of the guys in the most recent class is on the elite WR level that we are accustomed to.

Brooks is fine, next year should be a major breakout year for him. A true freshman being fourth on the depth chart behind two first rounders doesn’t mean he’s a bust. We asked him to basically be a #1 or #2 in only his second or third game; and against Georgia at that. Still put up 6-48.

Hall is a physical project but if we can get him to get reliable hands, woo boy.

Can we talk about the fact that the 2021 class, according to 247 composite, included the #2, #5, #6, and #10 receivers in the entire nation, and everybody recruited them? Would be a heck of a coincidence if so many of the best coaches in the nation were wrong.

Can we also talk about the fact they are true freshmen playing behind upperclassmen?

Jeeze. Maybe we should wait a couple years before deciding they are failures.

It's prudent to note that the outstanding 2017 freshmen class, Tua and the receivers, were all 2nd team, so they worked together throughout the year, and when they all got the chance in the 2nd half of the title game, they were well in synch, which is so important for a quarterback and the receivers. These freshmen haven't worked with Young like those guys worked with Tua.

edit for 247 composite ranking

May or may not be, bu it's the same wide receiver coach for the last 3 years. His players have won a Heisman Trophy and Biletnikoff Award winner, 3 All-Americans, two first-round NFL Draft picks with another projected first round pick in the next draft.

We can't give him all the credit for the receivers that went in the first round. Those guys were originally coached by Locksley and Gattis who was considered one of the best receivers coaches in college.

Underrated point.

The 17 WR haul of Ruggs, Jeudy and Smith scared off a lot of receivers because of playing time.

Getting Waddle in the 18 class scared off even more.

Bama's 18 an 19 classes had 4 receivers in it. 20 had 3 in it.

Waddle in 18 and Metchie in 19 have been stars, Bolden in 18 has been solid. The rest of the 18-20 class receivers seem to be busts.

I think there’s something to this as well. You need live reps. I think you saw some of BOB’s NFL background this year. You might only have 5 WRs dressed on gameday so he is used to riding the same few guys.

The 20 class was a filler, warm body class and that's all it ever was. We took Baker, Jone-Bell, and Holden because none of the elite guys wanted to come in and compete with Smitty, Waddle, and Ruggs. Ruggs ended up declaring for the draft but a lot of people thought he was returning when that class signed in December.
