Matt Hayes on the state of Alabama's Wide Receivers.....
quote:
4. A disturbing trend
Alabama has been so good for so long under coach Nick Saban, the flaws are often overlooked.
Case in point: The lack of recruiting and development success at the wide receiver position over the past 3 years.
For years, Alabama sent receiver after receiver to the NFL, many in the first round. But the past 3 recruiting classes at Alabama have produced one impact player at the position: John Metchie III (from 2019).
The 2020 class of Thaiu Jones-Bell, Javon Baker and Traeshon Holden have combined for 33 career catches and 2 TDs, and the 2021 class of Ja’Corey Brooks, Agiye Hall, JoJo Earle and Christian Leary have 33 career catches and 3 TDs.
But for the addition of Jameson Williams from the transfer portal last season, Alabama’s wide receiver room would’ve been Metchie and possession receiver Slade Bolden – and not much else.
Now it’s clear why Alabama desperately wanted (and signed) Georgia portal transfer WR Jermaine Burton.
In the past 3 years, 7 high school recruits (not including Metchie) have combined for 66 catches and 5 TDs over 41 games at Alabama. That’s missing on recruits, and poor development. Or both.
The Tide signed 3 4-star recruits in the 2022 class but missed out on the top 3 wide receiver recruits: Luther Burden (Missouri), Evan Stewart (Texas A&M) and Chris Marshall (Texas A&M).

That class was widely acknowledged to be a less talented group that was almost a filler class.

Pretty silly to judge a class of true freshmen when the WR group had 2 first round picks in it ahead of them.
We need the rising sophomores to step up, and if they don't then maybe this sort of argument has some merit. But at this point it's pretty silly. We brought Burton in because we badly wanted a proven commodity to go along with the young talented kids who are figuring things out.

LOL - Alabama didn't sign 1 of the 3 best WRs in the country and it's a "problem". That's about the most "Alabama problem" I've ever seen

Matt Hayes posts on this site and BOL. I'm not going to put his name on here but there's no doubt that he's been coming after our program for a while now. Alabama signed a great recruiting class. Does he really think that Isaiah Bond and Anderson are substandard players ? If so then wow.

I got the impression that he (Hayes) was just trying to find something negative to write about Alabama.

Might be a candidate for moving to offense as a H-back/TE like our current TE.

Interesting thought. I wonder if he can catch. The kid can run like a deer, he’s posted sub 11.0 100m times in track.

He's playing OLB right now because Koht is out this spring with injury. They need depth at the outside spots. If he stays there when Koht reruns then I'll ask questions.

I think disturbing trend might be overstating it. We saw a completely epic gaggle of 1st round talent go though the program all at the same time and three things happen as a result of that, everyone else sux by comparison in our minds, the guys we do sign don't play much so they don't get better, and yes recruiting does take a hit because top players want to go where they are going to start day one. We do need some speed to keep the defense honest and beyond that you need guys who will fight for and get contested balls. It's also critical we find more diverse talent at RB. I love BRob but he was a north south boomer who would have been part of a great rotation if we had someone more dynamic like Jahmyr Gibbs. If Gibbs can have a great year and stay healthy along with McLellan coming back it would go a long way toward helping those receivers get open.
