Harris is a freakish athlete, just needs to learn the position. Maybe he’s a high aptitude guy.

Alabama escaped Saturday’s scrimmage with only one injury. And Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban doesn’t believe it is a serious one.
“Jerome Ford is probably the only guy that got any kind of injury today that I would say -- he may be out for a week,” Saban said in a press conference. “He got an ankle sprain. We don’t think it’s all that bad, but doc thinks it will be a week, get (got?) an MRI on it and thinks he’ll be OK.”
A week after being Alabama’s leading rusher in its first scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Ford suffered an ankle injury early on in the Tide’s second and final game-like practice of fall camp. But the diagnosis was much more positive for Ford than freshman Trey Sanders, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury he sustained late in a regular practice session last week.
During Saturday’s 14th practice of the preseason, Saban and company elected to also hold out several players, including four potential starters on the defensive front seven. Saban said tight end Miller Forristall, linebacker Terrell Lewis, defensive linemen DJ Dale and LaBryan Ray and offensive lineman Matt Womack did not scrimmage after participating in practice this week.
“We’re trying to get our team healthy,” Saban said. “I think now, with school starting, that maybe we’ll be able to get some of these guys. And I think everybody’s got to view this time we have off tomorrow and pretty light on Monday to be able to get some recovery going for ourselves.”

Injuries have been prevalent during the Tide’s fall camp. Sanders and inside linebacker Joshua McMillon, who injured his knee last weekend, are both out indefinitely, and several other players have either missed practice time or appeared limited.
Saban was asked if he ever changes the format of scrimmages to try to avoid injuries due to a large number of camp setbacks, as well as injury concerns for the NFL in their preseason games.
“Yes, we do,” Saban said. “But the question, to me, is they practice a lot less in the NFL than they used to and they just as many or more injuries. So, how relative is all of that? And if you’re going to play football, you need to practice football a certain way so that you don’t get injured. And player safety is the No. 1 thing that we’re always concerned about in terms of the way we practice, the things that we do with our players. That’s No. 1.
“And I don’t think football is a dangerous game, but you have to do it correctly. You have to play safely. You’ve got to keep your face up, you can’t put your head down. That’s going to enhance head injuries. Wearing the right kind of shoes can help foot and ankle injuries. Getting proper rest.
"I mean, there’s a seven-year study in the NFL on guys that sleep eight hours during the season having 30 percent less chance of getting injured than guys that don’t. So, pretty significant some of these things in terms of how people need to take care of themselves so that they can stay on the field and avoid injury.”
This was the last scrimmage of the preseason for the Crimson Tide, who will have Sunday off before returning to the practice field Monday, Aug. 19, at 7:30 p.m. CT. Alabama will kick off the 2019 season against Duke on Aug. 31 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium (2:30 p.m. on ABC).

BOZ? Harris move to the front of the Will line, you good with that? what's the buzz, did he look good? Hear he had at least one big tackle for a big loss today
My comments about Benton were A. From seeing it and B. From sauces saying he might have a maturity problem. They also said it’s going to be hard to keep Harris off the field. After watching today it seems like Harris has a legit shot to take the spot, or at minimum they try them both out against Duke. Harris is an athlete but I’m not sure if he could absorb everything and be effective. I guess the real test is seeing will he commit to his decisions good or bad and not hesitate.
The scrimmages are scripted and it’s hard to tell how good he is.

A true freshman started opposite Dylan Moses in Saturday’s scrimmage. Christian Harris, a 6-foot-2, 244-pound summer enrollee from Baton Rouge, La., stepped in in place of injured redshirt senior Joshua McMillon in Alabama’s second and final scrimmage of the preseason. And by all accounts, the freshman played well in the game-like practice session.
“He did a good job,” said Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said after the scrimmage. “I’d like to watch the film. He’s a football player. It’s important to him. He runs and hits people. Is he where he needs to be in terms of what to do, how to do it, why it’s important to do it that way?
“… But when we’ve had guys like this in the past whether it was C.J. Mosley playing as a freshman, (Dont’a) Hightower playing as a freshman, Rolando McClain playing as a freshman, we just put them in there and play them, and they got to get some on-the-job training.”
Prior to Saturday’s scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium was the first time reporters had spotted Harris beside Moses at the front of the inside linebacker line and with the first-team defense. In the practices following McMillon’s injury last weekend, it had been redshirt sophomore Markail Benton.

But the true freshman appears to be making a move as fall camp comes to a close. And for him to be mentioned with some of the linebackers Saban named shows the potential he sees in Harris -- a player that is still learning the inside linebacker position. At University Lab, he played wide receiver, defensive back and returned kicks on back-to-back state championship teams.
A former 4-star recruit, Harris was the No. 4-rated inside linebacker, No. 3 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 71 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports.
“I’m excited,” Harris told BamaOnLine before enrolling at Alabama in late May. “I put my trust in Coach (Pete) Golding that he’s going to lead me in the right direction and help with this linebacker position since I’ve never played it before.
“… Just from playing safety and corner so much, with certain coverages and scenarios, I would know what they’re doing, and that will probably help me understand more just because I played really every position except for D-line. So, I have a little bit of background of what’s going on, so I feel like that will help me learn the playbook a little faster and stuff like that.”
Alabama still has six practices this upcoming week before game week for the season opener against the Duke Blue Devils, but Harris will be a player we watch from this point on. Can he hold off Benton, Ale Kaho, Jaylen Moody and Shane Lee for the starting Will linebacker spot?
“There’s still competition at that position,” Saban said, “but he’s a guy that has made plays throughout fall camp so far that we’re hopeful will be able to continue to improve and develop and play like a starter."

LINK ]Nick Saban Asking For 100 Percent Is Not Asking Too Much (BamaOnLine | Video)
quote:
![]()
How much does Nick Saban want from his Alabama football players as they continue preseason camp? Just 100 percent. Well, that’s not exactly right. He wants 100 percent of what they can give, because many of them – perhaps all of them – aren’t 100 percent.
Alabama had its second and final scrimmage of the preseason Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium and in answer to a question following the scrimmage, Saban said that plaeyers were, working hard, improving, making progress “and that’s all you can ask for.
“I tell the players all the time, ‘Give us 100 percent of what you’ve got.’ Some people think if they’re not 100 percent, they really can’t play. We need them to practice giving 100 percent of whatever they’ve got. That’s how you get better.
“There’s nobody 100 percent right now. We’ve practiced how many practices in the last whgatever and it’s been 97 degrees every day. I mean who’s 100 percent? We hit more we probably hit all the rest of the year. So who’s 100 percent? Nobody is 100 percent. You’ve got to give 100 percent of what you’ve got.”
Saban said, “The thing I asked the players after the last scrimmage and challenged them to do is, ‘How much will you improve from the last scrimmage to this scrimmage?’ So that’s going to happen by how much you invest and what you commit to doing, every day in practice so you’re focused on happening right now so you can make that improvement.”

In his synopsis of Saturday’s scrimmage, he said, “We had a significant number of guys who made strides, who were better in this game – a lot less anxiety, especially for the young players. But we’re still not where we want to be.
“I think we’re still not tackling well on defense, too many missed tackles, too many guys breaking down, not aggreessive enough, not enough clean-up, giving up a few too many big plays. On offense, last week we week we were really good on turnovers, taking care of the ball. Today we had the ball on the ground more than we like; threw a few too many picks. So we’ve got to do a better job of taking care of the ball.”
Saban also took note of the truism that it is difficult to look good on both offense and defense when scrimmaging. “If this guy’s doing good, and that guy who is playing againsty him who is still on your team may not be doing so good.”
He also pointed out that Saturday’s scrimmage was different than the first. “We played the firsts 55 or 56 plays exactly like a game. Had the headsets, had the coaches who are going to be in the box in the box, had the coaches who are going to be on the sidelines were on the sidelines.”
The scrimmage, he said, was first offense against second defense for 25 or so plays and the second offense against the first defense for another 25 or so. “And then we did some situational stuff, which was good on good, which I think is a little more challenging to the players.”
He said that a number of players were held out either with injuries or because they are recuperating from injuries “which is great for the younger guys experience and development, because they have to be responsible and accountable to do their job, but it’s also totally realistic to see how that unit is developing.”
Alabama will be off Sunday, have a light practice Monday. Classes begin at The University Wednesday. Alabama opens the season in two weeks, Aug. 31, in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta against Duke.

Nice. DeVonta Smith (6) went up and made a nice-looking catch between CBs Josh Jobe (left) and Patrick Surtain II (right) during Saturday’s preseason scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Really want King Mwikuta to be awesome solely because that is the coolest frickin name of all time, especially for a rushing OLB/DE

King Mwikuta is one of my favorite recruits in recent years. He jumped on Bama's offer early and actively recruited others. He's grown and muscled up considerably since he committed. A bit raw coming in, but I think he'll be a great one for the Tide with Sal coaching him up. Great attitude, funny too, and LOVES Bama's culture. See my sig.

Observer McNugget: "Tua was touch sacked 5 times today against the first team defense. First team defensive backs played great against the stout receiver group."

i'm just hoping they play enough players that we dont go into next season with very little experience.
Posted on 8/17/19 at 6:39 pm to crimsontater
I expect them to do so. You had a lot of guys that couldn’t leave last year. So no need to develop backups. Now a lot of those guys can leave. So you have to develop the next group.

Does anyone know if Sark and Golding were in the booth or on the field during the game simulation part of today's scrimmage?

So potential Mike and Will LBs are both from Baton Rouge. I’m sure that will trigger the corn dogs.
