Behind the scenes of Barry Sanders' untouchable 1988 season

Carlton
quote:

I know this is a little different because we have multiple outstanding WRs but this reminds me of when Barry Switzer allegedly said don't hurt Thurman Thomas because you don't want to face the freshman they have (Barry Sanders) or something to that effect. Man Juedy and Waddle are so talented. I rerun Waddles TD against UGA in my head regularly.

quote:

Three weeks later, OU's coaching staff was preparing for Bedlam when Switzer burst into the room after watching the Cowboys on film.

"I told them, 'You better hope Thurman Thomas doesn't get hurt,' " Switzer said to his bewildered staff." Because, Switzer told them, Sanders is even better.

Here is a link to the Stephen M Smith (viewers beware) for an interview with Jermaine Johnson as
“FunnyMaine” talks Bama football... I couldn't listen to it... just really don't like SMS's voice and delivery.
Listen at your own peril
Famous comedian and huge Tide fan is “excited” about QB Mac Jones By Stephen M. Smith Posted on August 18, 2019
quote:

His offseason surge and strong play in fall camp has impressed more than just his coaches and teammates at the University of Alabama.

Jermaine “FunnyMaine” Johnson, a famous comedian and radio personality for 95.7 JAMZ in Birmingham, Ala., is a believer of Mac Jones. In his push to be the No. 2 quarterback, Johnson has noticed the hard work, leadership and maturity of the redshirt sophomore and is all for him getting an opportunity.

As an avid Crimson Tide fan, Johnson was featured on In My Own Words last week with yours truly of Touchdown Alabama Magazine.

He spoke on how fans need to stop “sleeping on Jones” and how he admires the Floridian for continuing to push, not having an ego and waiting his turn.

*Mac Jones segment starts at 11:02 mark on video

You can also listen to the audio version of the podcast via Speaker.

Alabama Football: A new ranking for the Tide’s opposing QBs
by Ronald Evans

quote:

Check out some thoughts on the Pro Football Focus ranking of the quarterbacks Alabama football will face in the coming season.
PFF’s most recently published college data is a ranking of the FBS starting quarterbacks. We discuss it in detail below but since all Alabama football fans will demand it – PFF rated Trevor Lawrence No. 1 and Tua Tagovailoa No. 2.

There are two differences in our earlier ranking and the one published by PFF. Our results were opinion-driven rather than data-driven (and opinion) by PFF. Also, we included the one opposing FCS QB the Tide will face in our ranking. For those skipping the above link to our earlier story, our opinion was, and is, Western Carolina’s Tyler Adams is better than three FBS QBs the Crimson Tide will defend.

Our previous ranking and the PFF list is not too far apart for most of the QBs. Except about Tua not being No.1. PFF rated Jarrett Guarantano and Joe Burrow as the best regular-season QBs the Tide will face. Our top pair were Jake Bentley and Kellen Mond.
The PFF Ranking from worst to best

New Mexico State – Josh Adkins – Ranked No. 118 in the FBS
Arkansas – Ben Hicks or Nick Starkel – Both ranked at No. 102 in the FBS
Auburn – Joey Gatewood – Ranked at No. 96
Duke – Quentin Harris – Ranked at No. 91
Mississippi State – Tommy Stevens – Ranked at No. 63
Southern Miss – Jack Abraham – Ranked at No. 59
Ole Miss – Matt Corral – Ranked at No. 50
South Carolina – Jake Bentley – Ranked at No. 33
Texas A&M – Kellen Mond – Ranked at No. 25
Tennessee – Jarrett Guarantano – Ranked at No. 21
LSU – Joe Burrow – Ranked at No. 17

We expect Alabama football fans will find it interesting Tyler Johnson III of the UAB Blazers is rated higher by PFF than any of the above QBs. PFF has Johnson at No. 14 in the FBS.

Some other QB names of interest to Alabama football fans. Oklahoma Sooners’ Jalen Hurts is ranked No. 11. Georgia’s Jake Fromm is ranked at No. 9. Crimson Tide fans will remember a name recruited by Nick Saban to basically be fourth team. Iowa State’s Brock Purdy is ranked above Jalen and Fromm at No. 8 in the FBS.

We defer to PFF in terms of ranking quarterbacks and not just because the world could use more professional courtesy. We will stake out a firm opinion on a related matter. No team without a Top 15 QB will take down the Crimson Tide.

What are the odds that Giles Amos (TE) will be awarded a scholarship at the end of camp?
Seems Bama may have 1 to give and need to be at 85 in order to make everything work.

Surge1... what do you think about this?

Sark and Golding were both on the sidelines during the entire scrimmage.

Hey Boz how is Alfano looking? Should we expect him to contribute this year? I know it’s been asked but I haven’t seen a response on it

Probably going to get that wish on both accounts. Can't see any realistic way to have Bama higher than #2, and can't see many voters putting them #1 on their ballot. In fact, you're likely to see low single digit first place votes.

I'm so glad we doubled back and got Christian Harris. I remember we wanted him then it looked like we were slow playing him, he committed to A&M I believe, but it always looked like he wanted to be at Bama. Looks like things worked out.

I've been beating the Christian Harris drum for a while now. I'm biased. He's from Baton Rouge. But, I admit he's exceeding my expectations. Kid wasn't an early enrollee and what he's doing according to reports is hella impressive.

Yea, just think if he would have gotten here in January. The young guy hasn't even played linebacker for a year. His talent and instincts must be unreal

The kid must have a high football IQ. The kid said before he came in that him playing in the defensive secondary would help him as far as knowing what's going with coverages. Plus, it's likely Dylan was giving him tips all along as they went to the same high school. And, U High has a high level football program that is highly funded. The kid wasn't in a program that allowed him to play "see the ball, get the ball."

I'm pretty sure we have 84 total counters now. Giles Amos is a good choice to award a scholly to since it would only be for one year.

So what was the deal with LSU? Did they not recruit him very hard, or did he just want out of there? They weren't even in his top 3, were they?
