TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama put the final touches on preparations for its second scrimmage of fall camp during a two-hour morning practice inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on Friday.

Friday's helmets and shoulder pads session was the 13th in a series of 20 practices for the Crimson Tide as it prepares for its season-opening contest with Duke in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. The matchup between the Crimson Tide and Blue Devils is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31, with a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on ABC.

The Crimson Tide will move over to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday for closed scrimmage that is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT. Alabama will be off Sunday following the scrimmage and will return to the practice field on Monday, Aug. 20.

Lighting company details exciting features of Bryant-Denny Stadium's new LED lighting system
Andrew Olson |

quote:

Alabama has installed new LED lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium and based on reactions to a preview shared on social media, they’re already a hit with fans.

AD Greg Byrne teased that the lights will flash crimson every time the Crimson Tide scores. The company that installed the new system, Musco Lighting, told AL.com that that won’t be the only entertainment feature the new lighting brings to Alabama football games this fall. The lights can change colors and sync to music.

“It’s going to be more crisp, more aesthetically pleasing and that goes more to our glare control and how we control glare to the players and the fans. It will feel more like a theater,” account manager Vaughn Blythe told AL.com

Musco told AL.com that even the color of the direct lighting to the field can be changed. Michael Casagrande noted that that effect will not be used during gameplay, but for pregame and timeouts.

“They just add to the show, the fan experience, the theatrical capability that we are already doing with our field of play fixtures,” Blythe told Casagrande. “Then you add in the color changing and it’s a cool look from a theatrical standpoint.”

It will certainly be interesting how this new theatrical experience looks on TV and in person.

Alabama Athletics Twitter: The new look at Bryant-Denny Stadium at night with the addition of LED lighting.
quote:

New details on how Bryant-Denny Stadium lights will change fan experience By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com

Night games will look a little different at Bryant-Denny Stadium moving forward.

The old lighting system was recently replaced with a new LED system that gained attention in videos Alabama released on social media. The exact details weren’t explained beyond that but AL.com spoke with the company that installed the new system.

It involves capabilities to change colors and sync the lighting to music, said Vaughn Blythe of Musco Lighting. The key account manager worked directly with Alabama to create an improved experience for fans in the stadium, watching on TV and for the players on the field.

The old system with 300 light fixtures was replaced with 180 new LED units.

The net result is double the light level while cutting energy consumption in half.

“Yes, they are going to notice it,” Blythe said. “It’s going to be more crisp, more aesthetically pleasing and that goes more to our glare control and how we control glare to the players and the fans. It will feel more like a theater.”

The new lights exceed the broadcast standard for NCAA finals events, Blythe said.

Most of the buzz around this project is going to the color capability added with the RGBW lights.

This component is unique for Musco -- which designed lighting for 13 NFL stadiums -- because it includes new capabilities for the color shifting. It’s the first project for Musco in which the color of the direct lighting to the field can be changed.

In the past, they’d used those colored lights in the canopy of venues that don’t change the full stadium’s look.

These effects will only be used outside of the competition like for pregame or timeouts.

“They just add to the show, the fan experience, the theatrical capability that we are already doing with our field of play fixtures,” Blythe said. “Then you add in the color changing and it’s a cool look from a theatrical standpoint.”

The DMX controls that come with the system allows the school to sync the lighting to traditionally played songs on game day.

The price of this new lighting system has not been disclosed but it comes with a warrantee. The light levels, parts and labor are guaranteed for 25 years, Blythe said.

The first opportunity to see these lights in action also remains a mystery. The only game times announced to date for home games is the Sept. 7 visit from New Mexico State. That kicks off at 3 p.m. Other possibilities include Sept. 21 vs. Southern Miss, Sept. 28 vs. Ole Miss or Oct. 19 vs. Tennessee. Every Alabama-LSU game since 2011 has been played at night and the Tigers come to Tuscaloosa on Nov. 9.

Being that his buddy drew a 6 game suspension, last/this season; I sure hope he learned from that and chooses not to be in a position to get into a similar position. But, maybe that removal of that obvious influence will be beneficial. Lord knows Bama really needs someone to stand up and take this position.

If they won’t get rid of cow bells, there is no way in hell they do anything to limit effects that are controlled by the facility - particularly when it is used to enhance the fan experience in an era where live attendance is declining.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (13) during open practice at Fan Day in Bryant-Denny Stadium Aug. 3, 2019. (Ben Flanagan / AL.com)
Alabama pre-scrimmage report: Notes on O-Line, ILB, etc.
By Rainer Sabin | rsabin@al.com
quote:

Alabama held its second scrimmage of the preseason Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It was 95 degrees under clear blue skies in Tuscaloosa.

Here are some observations from the limited access period provided to the media:

— Freshman Evan Neal was spotted with the first team at left guard while Chris Owens was at center and Emil Ekyor was positioned at right guard. It’s worth noting Matt Womack has been limited recently with an undisclosed injury.

— The second offensive line group included Amari Kight at left tackle, Deonte Brown at left guard, Landon Dickerson at center, Kendall Randolph at right guard and Tommy Brown at right tackle.

— Inside linebacker Christian Harris appeared to be working with the first team in a nickel package. He was paired with Dylan Moses.

— Interior defensive lineman DJ Dale (sprained knee) was in full pads. So too was LaBryan Ray (ankle), who returned this week to practice.

— Before practice, running back Trey Sanders wheeled himself into the stadium on a knee scooter. He had a cast over his left foot, which he hurt severely earlier this month.

— Freshman offensive lineman Pierce Quick was back on the field after he was spotted in a walking boot earlier this week because of a lower leg injury.
