This brings up a good debate. Based off of talent alone, this team is the best since...

I was actually thinking about this - best roster on paper since when?
Granted there’s still a bunch of unknowns. We don’t even really know how good Quinnerly is, much less a guy like Ellis. But on paper it’s pretty loaded and better than the Sexton team.
I’d have to look at some of the early-mid Gottfried teams. You can definitely skip over any other Avery team. There was a lot of hype for Grant’s third year with Jamychal, Tony Mitchell, Releford, and the recruiting class of Lacey, Randolph, and Cooper. But that recruiting class didn’t really pan out, especially that year, and Tony Mitchell went off the rails.
The Gottfried years are definitely getting into Wikipedia territory for me now. At this point, I can’t remember which team blew it versus Kent State and which team blew it versus UW-Milwaukee.
Edit: Tony Mitchell and Jamychal were legit 1st team ALL-SEC type guys on paper. So that team looked pretty good going into the year.

It has been a while since we have had a team like this to be honest. The typical Gottfried team had 3-5 great players and the talent level went downhill in a hurry once you got to the bench. In terms of quality depth you probably have to go back to sometime in the 2000-2003 range to find a roster this good from top to bottom. I think that Green/Mitchell/Releford team and the Sexton team also fall into the very top heavy category.

Primo at 18 and Petty at 55 in ESPN's latest 2021 NBA mock draft.

After reading that Chad I believe with what's happening with SEC Pac12 & Big 10 football by playing a conference only schedule that most conferences will do the same in basketball. And seems a lot of support for starting around Jan 1. We shall see...

The Sexton team was really really really overrated. He covered a lot of holes. The supporting cast was a bunch of guys who each had 1 decent basketball skill, but did everything else below average. If Sexton knew what he was getting into then I doubt he would have chosen Bama.
This is why I’m ten times more excited about our 5-Star tandem now (Primo/JQ) than I was about 2017 (Sexton/Petty) because I didn’t believe we had anyone else on the roster that could play up to their level. It hurt even more that Petty wasn’t good at first either. Now, we’ve got a great roster to host 2 new 5-Stars. Petty, Shack, & Herb are great, Bruner looks like a baller, and the other Frosh plus Juwan Gary hopefully gel with the college game better than Ar’Mond Davis, Nick King, Galin, Giddens, & Dazon Ingram did.

That’s true. 2011-2012 had two legit stars in Green and Mitchell, a really good young PG in Releford, and then a drop off. A hyped up freshmen class full of guys that weren’t quite ready to be big-time contributors (maybe a bit of a cautionary tale), and a bunch of filler (Eblen, Hankerson, Engstrom, Gueye, etc.). And Andrew Steele.
The upside to this team is we have enough proven guys (Herb, Petty, Bruner, Shackelford) and enough overall depth that we can deal with some of the newcomers not completely living up to the hype.
Except Quinnerly, I guess. He needs to be good.

Why is Tennessee supposed to be so good? I remember them struggling most of last year.

They return 4/5 starters and added two 5-star guards ranked Top 20 overall in the 2020 recruiting class. Their recruiting class was #4 in the country.
As good as ours was, it was #12 (even though Primo got screwed, and Bruner didn't count).

The 2011-12 team is up there with that 1-2 punch in Mitchell and Green. The problem with that team was the total reliance on mostly freshmen to be our supporting cast. Of course the Mitchell and Green suspensions made things an uphill climb for that squad, but there was no way we could have seen that happening in the preseason.
With this team we have 3 players who had NBA eyes on them for this upcoming draft (Jones, Petty, and Bruner) all with 3 years of experience. We have another proven stud with Shackelford who could be a 20 PPG scorer if he gets enough touches. We have 2 five-star level players in Quinerly and Primo (both of which national experts expect big things from). Tchikou looks like a for sure back up, and he has the highest draft potential of anyone on the roster with his combination of skill and size. Highly thought of JUCO upperclassmen in Rojas and Ellis who both would have definitely played 20+ minutes last year, may not regularly crack the rotation for this team. Juwan Gary was a top 100 player last year and at the very least gives us a versatile and extremely athletic defender to throw in the lineup. Hell, even Reese can and has blown up and won games for us with his timely hot streaks. The only players that I can somewhat safely say won’t get many minutes are Miles and KAH, both of which are top 100ish players who can easily prove me wrong.
This is pretty easily the most talent depth-wise I’ve seen in one of our teams from a preseason perspective. Probably means the season is cancelled, but at least I can cling to the hope that college basketball will be played this year.

Tennessee is trending up and will be a force, maybe even the favorite for the SEC crown this season. It’s LSU I think that’s due for a setback. The talent is there but I get the feeling there will be some chemistry problems and maybe some players playing for selfish reasons.

I understand why Texas and Barnes parted ways, but UTk got really, really lucky that he was just burned out on Texas and not burned out on coaching basketball. I expected him to be what Howland has become at State, which is to say roll the ball out there and let them do whatever while collecting a paycheck and telling recruits about how he coached Kevin Durant.

If he could be consistent on layups, it would be even better.
