Do we still have too much cronyism instead of professionalism in the Athletic Department?

It's certainly not a coincidence both coaches I'm railing against are Arizona alum. I couldn't imagine someone with 0 head coaching experience getting the keys to 2 top 10 college programs any other way.

People want to gripe about leadership not having oversight, but these same leaders contracted with the company that helped to identify and catch Bohannon. The system worked.

This is one of the problems of people these days. We put up an electric fence to protect a facility. A person tries to climb the fence and is stopped. Then we panic and get angry at leaders because a person tried to climb the fence instead of recognizing that the systems in place worked as designed.

It’s irrational.

He hired the baseball turd. This clown didn't suddenly become a hard core gambler overnight.

The actions of Darius Miles and Brad Bohannon are not indictive of a culture problem at Alabama, but of two bad acts by two bad individuals.

Three. You forgot Matt Self.

Bohannon's fall was more than a mistake

So was Self's. And he isn't getting mentioned very much in this thread.

Has he? Oats has been great. Bohannon is a Mike Price tier disaster if he actually has been betting against his own players.

I’d say the jury is out on the rest although swimming and rowing have shown some nice early returns.

Byrne has also failed to accomplish the most important infrastructure investment we need which is a basketball arena.

Can't disagree with any of this.

I’m not saying Byrne should be fired at the moment

Me either.

Point is, we should hold these people like Byrne to a very high standard because there’s a long line of qualified candidates who’d love to have this job. The high standard and pressure are what the money’s for.

Agree.

Saban also has over a decade of unprecedented success to get a pass for one bad DC hire.

He didn't have a decade of success when the text book scandal hit or the fishing trip heard round the world.
My point is, sure Byrne is responsible for hiring coaches, but how could he have known that Bo was a gambler? As soon as he found out about the incident he didn't hesitate to fire him.
As far as the basketball thing, what could he have done better? Told Nate Oats what to say?

Gimme a break.

He already said in his post that the swimming hires were poor. His first volleyball hire failed as well.

Sad part is, the swimming hire would have been the easiest one. I would have picked up the phone and called Jonty Skinner and told him until he told me no, I wasn't interviewing anyone else.

I do believe Jonty retired, but had a late change of heart and ended up taking a job at Indiana. He quit like 3 weeks after Coley bailed on us lol. I forget which up and comer assistant bailed on Indiana, but Jonty coming in there was basically a huge favor to Ray Looze at IU. I 100% agree about calling until he said no. I would've kept calling after that, but that's me. The man has nothing but my fullest respect as a coach and former tide athlete.

For all I know Jonty could've signed off on Coley, but I'm incredibly doubtful given their diametric approaches to coaching. I won't pretend my former club coach didn't change his spots from trash yard enthusiast to a more refined high intensity coach that got us Caleb Dressel.

How's your daughter doing? She still working in the athletic department while at school? We need moar inside scoops.

Sadly, Moar, after her stellar record her freshman year, she got more involved in her sorority leadership and SGA and let her job in the AD go after the 2020-21 year. Her record while on staff:

Football: 13-0, SEC champs, Natty!, arguably one of the greatest football teams in NCAA history, playing an all SEC schedule and destroying all comers.

Basketball: SEC regular season champs (first since 2002), SEC tourney champs (first since 1991), lost in the Sweet 16 to UCLA in a close game, Oats won SEC COTY.

Gymnastics-SEC champs, finished 5th in the Elite Eight, Bama's last appearance in the championships.

Women's Swimming and Diving: 4th place SEC championships, 5th NCAA championships for the highest ever finish for the ladies at NCAA's; 400 Freestyle relay national champs for the 1st time ever. Ironically, my daughter was a part of her high school's first ever women's team to make it to the Florida High School State Championships. The event, 400 freestyle relay!

Men's Swimming: Finished in the top 15 at NCAA's for the 7th straight year.

Softball: SEC tourney champs, Regional champs, Super Regional Champs, lost in the Semifinals of the WCWS to FSU, Bama's last appearance in OKC.

Women's Cross Country: 8th place in NCAA's, second highest finish ever.

Men's Track and Field: Indoor, 3rd in SEC, outdoor, 2nd in SEC tied for best finish since 1985

Women's Track and Field: 3rd at SEC outdoor(best finish in 25 years), 4th in NCAA outdoor

Rowing: 2nd in Big 12 (SEC does not sponsor rowing), first NCAA appearance in team history.

Women's basketball: First NCAA tourney appearance since 1999, lost in Round of 32 to Maryland.

Baseball: Despite that POS Bohannon, made NCAA regionals for the 1st time since 2014.

So yeah, I've been trying to talk her into going back in the AD for Alabama's best interests!

Instead, she's got some position in the SGA cabinet, will graduate on time next spring with dual degrees, currently a 3.948 GPA (trying hard to get that red mortar board, but I don't think she has enough classes left) and appears to be headed to law school at UA unless she scores high enough on the LSAT to go to a higher ranked law school. But at 25th (per US News rankings), and tied with Notre Dame, Bama ain't too shabby and she should be a lock for admission in Tuscaloosa.
