I don't think I've ever had a problem with them.

Kinda hard to avoid having a private company with a natural monopoly in power generation and grid maintenance. The only real alternative is to have the government do it, a la TVA.

At least Alabama has a strong and independent Public Service Commission that totally isn't in Southern Company's back pocket, right?

NYC in latest 1800s had at least a dozen utility companies. Progressive movement consolidated these. Lubbock (TX) has two of them incidentally.

Do you live in the same neighborhood as Gmac? he was talking about a power outage last evening? Not sure what the reason for the problem, but he said it wasnt the power company's fault.

If you have Georgia Power, which is almost the entire state, it's the same company.

Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power are all part of Southern Company.

Miller Steam Plant has four 650 megawatt B&W Boilers. I don’t know about now , but 25yrs ago each boiler profited $1.3 million a day, that’s after paying all the cost.

$1.3 million of clear profit everyday 24/7 365, except when APCO shutdown to do maintenance when needed. And then you had Gorgas, Wilsonville and few more making power

Money was no object for Southern Company at one time, but they also made some major mistakes that cost them enormous amounts of money is the last 15yrs.

Not a government monopoly. Private company part of Southern Companies. The Alabama Public Service Commission is deep in their pockets which is why they keep getting rate increases while posting record profits.
TVA is a public entity and their rates are much lower.

There are many options in Texas. All were more expensive than what I paid when I lived in Alabama, and the electrical grid nearly fails any time it's under significant demand.

Entergy aka Louisiana Power & Light is an embarrassment as well. The linemen and CSRs are good people to deal with but the administration is as incompetent and clueless as you will find in a company.
