QB, WR, WR, RB, C, T

Even with all our talent, overcoming that is nearly impossible to still be very good/elite the next season.

Here is where Alabama ranks in various offensive categories/metrics in 2021 coming off of that drain of elite players from the 2020 team.

National Ranks
Yards Per Play - #16 (6.69)
Yards Per Game - #10 (484.7)
Points Per Game - #3 (44.6)
ESPN Offensive Efficiency - #2
SP+ Offensive Efficiency - #3
Offensive PPA - #7
Offensive Available Yards - #2
Offensive Points Per Drive - #2

We have complaints about our offense - and they are legitimate - but it is probably wise to look at things from 1,000 feet and realize how incredible it is that we are an "inconsistent" offense with a bunch of issues and we are still a consensus Top 5-7 offense after replacing what we replaced.

This is why Saban is happy so far with the job Bill O'Brien has been doing, the LSU game notwithstanding.

We lost so much on the offensive side of the ball. Our starting QB from last year, who finished third in the Heisman voting, is currently the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL. Our two star WRs are currently putting up decent numbers as starters in the NFL. Our star RB is the starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers and is having himself a decent season as well.

And yet here we are still putting up pretty decent numbers. We're certainly not as explosive as we were from 2018-20, but our offense is still very dangerous and very efficient.

The 2017-2020 bama offenses has a chance to go down as the most talented offenses of all time.

Plain and simple, Bama had 6 NFL starters on offense last year. It’s incredible that we’ve fielded a top 5ish offense this year. The closest comparison is 2019 LSU and their drop off was waaaaaaay higher

Don't forget our starting center last year, a 6'6 330 lb whole a-hole, is starting at guard for the Eagles. If we could have one player back from last season's team right now i would probably pick him.

That's an interesting thought. I think I would go with Najee.

I miss Najee and the offensive linemen lost. My hope is that the offensive line can start rounding into shape this week. Also hope that Trey Sanders can pick up some of the production lost with the other backs out. I actually like our passing game if Bryce can get some time to operate.

I think it's quite worthy to say we also had the OC "drafted" by Texas. I know Alabama has gone innumerous coordinators, but the fact that some schools keep coordinators for years is worth mentioning here.

Agreed about the coordinators.

Is it realistic for an Offenice Line to round out at this stage of the year, especially as we are still shuffling? Honest question.

I was told we are what we are earlier, and that even fell apart.

And still have the chance to play for the SEC title and go to the playoff.

Is this team more depleted than the 09 team that had only 2.5 recruiting classes under the current regime when it went undefeated ?

Alabama has as much if not more talent than any team in the country right now- today.

Leatherwood
Brown
Dickerson

Those were three grown men that had played a lot of football. Just haven't been able to replace that.

Replacing every key position on the field and in the booth with new people who have little experience causes issues and problems no matter the talent level.

This team is what, one drive away from being in the exact same position as that 2009 team was in mid-November? And I think we all know the differences in the level of drive and hunger on that 2009 team due to where that group of upperclassmen started (Shula) and how the previous season had ended. They had the sort of leadership and built in desire that can't be expected to be replicated. I know that no matter how hard I try even as a fan I could never replicate the sort of emotion I had in 2008/2009 today. It's a different program now.

Agree - the biggest differences in this offense and that offense are explosive plays and the dudes up front. The unfortunate part is that the dudes up front thing was expected early on, but it hasn't improved (and has possibly gotten worse).

Very true. I thought Marrone would be a good hire but has turned out not to be. We have talented guys on the roster, so if they aren't ready to play over some of the guys running out there, that is his problem. Bring back Stoutland.
