Alabama's football team and basketball trams both had the best records in the conference, 25-2 combined, of which only one of those games came against the bottom two teams in each sport.
That was the Vanderbilt game last week. Otherwise, the basketball team didn't play the 13th team in aTm, and the football team didn't play either of the two worst teams in the SEC in Vanderbilt and South Carolina.

I do wonder if somewhere out there analytics say the prudent play on a 1 on 3 fast break is to force up a contested shot at the rim? We do it consistently with minimal conversion. I would think the plus play would be to wait for numbers and reset.

But, while we are a pretty elite defense, we are not even a good offense. Sure we have occasions when we go off, but we have had a month in which we have mostly been horrid on offense.

Just for arguments sake, we’ve been pretty mediocre offensive for the past month, but the month before that, we were playing better offensively than any team in the country. What factors in either month trump the other to prove that either is this teams real identity?

quote:

That horridness led to losses in every single big match up in February. OK, Missouri and Arkansas. We simply cannot play defense enough to make up for terrible offense against really good teams.

The bad offensive stretches lead to some tough road losses, but yes, they were good teams. It also won an SEC Championship tonight against a team that gave us fits in Tuscaloosa on a “good” offensive night.

quote:

So, realistically, we have an okay shot at winning the conference tourney, but, Arkansas is playing the best basketball right now and should be the favorite. We can outlast not so great teams, but that is about it.

Arkansas has won 9(?) conference games in a row, so they’re currently on the same type run we started conference play on, and that’s their identity, rather than the team that started conference play 1-4? They’re a good team, but they’re streaking with the best of them right now. I’m not saying anything definitely will or won’t happen, but generalized assumptions based on short term trends call fall apart pretty quickly. If I had to guess, the defense we’ve seen from Bama is consistent and very, very good and the offense is probably somewhere between the team we saw in January and the team we’ve seen in February. Arkansas has been consistently good, but Alabama has been good with stretches of greatness, and come March, I’ll take the team that has the potential to be absolutely great. If you’re going to stick a Sweet 16 ceiling on a team, you can send it to Fayetteville.

I just hope we start making some shots and get going. The NCAA Tournament is all about getting hot and playing well for everyone but the most elite teams.

There are tons of teams in the past who were grinding along come late February who figured it out in the week or two after that. I'm just hoping we can be one of those teams.

If not? That sucks, but they gave us a damn great regular season.

Celebrated The Elite 8 team..and I've suffered heartbreak after heartbreak since..

Arkansas is a good team, don't get me wrong, probably a top 20 team in the country right now, maybe top 15, but us at our best is better than them at their best. We have had more injuries than they have had, wait til we get healthy again and get rolling. They don't want to see us in the tournament in two weeks.

The rubber match is gonna be a huge deal if we both make it to the last day of the SECT. Good luck and congrats on the good season.

2019 Auburn struggled all year and Had to hit a 3 with like 10 seconds left to beat an awful UGA team in Athens and then took off.

I’m hoping us clinching tonight helps our players just play loose these last 2 games and get in a rhythm

Another one. Great to see our fans so excited and supportive about basketball. Always knew, having witnessed our success in the 70s and 80s, Bama fans would support a winning BB team wholeheartedly. Here's more proof.

That’s what I was getting at, for the most part. I don’t know if we get hot or we don’t, but to claim Arkansas is clearly better than Alabama based on recent results is a little misleading. Bama at their best can play with and beat almost anybody. It remains to be seen if we can get back to our best, but a lot of people have given up on that even being a possibility.

It’s the exact same group of guys, so returning to January form is at least a possibility, even if it’s a long way from our current play.

I believe it was already mentioned here several days ago but one of the reporters brought up in the post game press conference that this was the first time the basketball and football teams won the the SEC championship in the same year since 1975-76.

I want Missouri and Arkansas at some point in the SEC Tournament. We face them on a neutral match, I think we win.

SEC CHAMPIONS | Alabama Men’s Basketball Clinches Regular-Season SEC Title with 64-59 Win at Mississippi State

The Crimson Tide clinched its first regular-season championship in 19 years

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 6/7 Alabama men's basketball team beat Mississippi State, 64-59, Saturday night to clinch the 2021 Southeastern Conference regular-season championship. It is the program's first conference title in 19 years dating back to the 2001-02 season.

Guard Jahvon Quinerly led the Crimson Tide with a game-high 19 points off the bench, while guard Jaden Shackelford added 15 points and six rebounds. Forward Herbert Jones pulled down a season-best 14 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

Alabama improved to 19-6 overall and 14-2 in SEC play with the win. The 14 wins in league play is tied for the fifth-most in program history.

Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
"I'm really proud of our guys. It's not easy to win SEC Championships. I thought our kids played really hard, that's the hardest we've played in a long time. They did what we asked them to do. The offense didn't come easy. Give Mississippi State a lot of credit they made it hard to score and they hung in there and made it a tight game, but our kids rebounded the ball and played hard, diving on the floor for loose ball and taking charges. I thought our defensive effort was the best we've had in a long time. We'll get the offense fixed hopefully next week. I'm just really proud of the guys, because SEC Championships don't come easy."

The Tide will host its final home game of the season on Tuesday, March 2, when it takes on in-state rival Auburn

The game is set for a 6 p.m. CT tipoff inside Coleman Coliseum and will be broadcast on ESPN2
